Reconciliation Through Indigenous Education
Explore strategies, teaching exemplars, and resources that support the teaching and learning of Indigenous ways of knowing in classrooms, schools and communities.About this Course
Governments, school boards and Indigenous communities have identified Indigenous education as a key priority, identifying specific educational goals to ensure the educational success of Indigenous learners. There is growing educational policy at local, provincial, territorial, and national levels that tell us there needs to be change in the way we design, deliver and assess learning opportunities for Indigenous learners. Educators need to be able to respond to education reform that prioritizes improved educational outcomes for Indigenous children and youth.

SOLAR PRIDE ON SALT SPRING’S SCHOOL
by Guy Dauncey January 29, 2015
It was a wet, overcast Saturday in January when two hundred people assembled in the school hall on Salt Spring Island to celebrate “flicking the switch” on the brand new 84-panel, 21-kilowatt solar PV system on the roof of the Gulf Islands Secondary School (GISS) gym.
The system will generate 23,000 kWh a year, a small fraction of the power the school uses, but the energy generated by the effort that went into organizing and fundraising will inspire Salt Springers to new heights for years to come.
The idea was dreamed up twelve months earlier by two members of Salt Spring’s Community Energy Group, an offshoot of Transition Salt Spring, which grew out of many years of climate and energy engagement by islanders. The team included competent solar professionals, and a champion to hold it all together.
BE COMMITTED
Lesson #1: Be committed. Anyone can do this, but it helps to have a committed team of motivated and knowledgable volunteers.
The first challenge was to get community buy-in. When members of the Energy Group found super-motivated students who went with them to the District 64 School Board and told them why it mattered so much, the School Board gave the project 100% support. In the months that followed the active support of the school board, school electrician, accounts department, building supervisors and administrators went far beyond the call of duty.
BE COLLABORATIVE
Lesson #2: Be collaborative. Collaborative trust is an essential ingredient when working on a complex project like this.

2015 Spring Solar Bulk Buy
Please visit and sign up at: www.viridianenergy.ca If you are thinking about Solar...
Its been a long time since we have used this mailing list but we have a great system now that allows us to bring down the cost of solar by 20% and we wanted to share that with you. Hot on the Heels of the success of the 2014 bulk buy in which 720 solar panels sold in 3 weeks, the Viridian Energy Co-Op has launched a spring bulk buy on solar panels, inverters, equipment and installation.
We are offering two options for prospective buyers:
1) Full Install Package (best value)
2) Solar Modules Only (for the DIY crowd)
In the 2014 Bulk Buy we were able to get our fully installed cost down on average 20%-30% lower than the average market price through volume purchasing and economies of scale. We hope to repeat that this time round and do an even better job for our communities.

A federal vote is on the horizon. Time to bone up on election issues.
If you were paying attention to voter issues in the 2011 election, you'll no doubt recall the robocall scandal. In the end, a Tory staffer was convicted of using automated calls to send voters in Guelph, Ontario to the wrong polling stations.
The Conservative party has always insisted that it played no role in the calls, but a federal judge ruled that fraud took place in "ridings across the country" and that the party's voter identification database was likely used to make the calls, though he found no evidence that the party "approved or condoned" the use of the database.
But before the robocall scandal there were allegations of voting irregularities in British Columbia -- in the riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands to be exact. That was during the 2008 election, and the Tyee's legislative bureau chief Andrew MacLeod broke most of those stories.
MacLeod joins a panel tonight at the Victoria Event Centre to discuss voter fraud in Canada. The event also includes a presentation from Ottawa filmmaker Peter Smoczynski, whose documentary in progress, Election Day in Canada, takes a look at voter suppression in Canada.

A message from the War Resisters Support Campaign
Let Them Stay Week 2015!In the last four months of 2014, an alarming number of U.S. Iraq war resisters in Canada received negative decisions in their immigration cases. Several of them have received, or are about to receive, removal orders
from Canada.
This is despite the fact that a majority of Canadians support their stance against the illegal and immoral war, and despite Parliament having twice voted to let US war resisters stay.
The strong response of Canadians is what has kept U.S. war resisters in Canada – and out of U.S. military prison – for the past ten years.
Once again, US war resisters need their supporters to take action.
The War Resisters Support Campaign is calling on Canadians to speak out against this attempt by the Harper government to remove remaining U.S. war resisters from Canada.
During the pan-Canadian week of Action, "Let Them Stay Week" from January 25 to 31, 2015, let federal Minister of Immigration Chris Alexander know that you support a provision for US war resisters to stay in Canada, and that you oppose any attempt to deport them.
The Canadian government has intervened directly into individual war resister cases through the unfair Operational Bulletin 202 which targets US conscientious objectors, and through blanket statements by former Immigration Minister Jason Kenney which undermined any possibility of a fair and impartial treatment of individual cases.
How you can help:
Sunday Jan 25 – Profile Picture Day: Change your profile picture on Facebook in support of US war resisters, for the duration of Let Them Stay Week
Monday Jan 26 – Media Outreach Day: Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper
Tuesday Jan 27 – Email/phone Blitz: Call or email Minister of Immigration Chris Alexander (cc to party leaders, immigration critics, and your MP) – visit resisters.ca for more info

50 Shades of Electric Vehicle policy
by Guy Dauncey January 24, 2015
NOTHING
Nothing. It’s the building block of all mathematics, from which numbers begin.
It’s also the current state of federal policy on electric vehicles in Canada. The BCSEA wants to change that and start adding some numbers, and we are seeking fifty volunteers to help us do so.
Five years after the government-funded Electric Vehicle Technology Roadmap for Canada recommended adopting a goal of 500,000 EVs by 2018, nothing has been done to advance their take-up.
There is a federal election coming, however, and just as the climate crisis is a top issue demanding federal leadership, a coherent climate platform must include strong measures to reduce carbon emissions from transportation, which produces 28% of Canada’s carbon pollution.
A shift from to electric vehicles combined with a shift to renewable electricity could go far to reduce those emissions, while also reducing the harmful health impacts caused by air pollution.
The BCSEA is seeking 50 volunteers to help put EVs on the agenda for this year’s federal election. We want to generate a ‘race to the top’ among the parties, so that the next government will have made strong promises to support electric vehicles, and be armed with the best policies to take to Paris for the big UN climate talks.
