Green Party information session on Bill C-51
Wed., March 4th
MAC A144
"The
UVic Greens invite you to join Saanich-Gulf Islands MP and Leader of the Green
Party, Elizabeth May for a timely discussion about Privacy and Security in
Canada. The event will take place in MAC A144 at 7pm this Wednesday. We've got
a Facebook event set up here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1543101665977584
Harper's new Bill C-51 will seriously erode
civil liberties in Canada. Spun as an anti-terror measure, this bill is one
of the greatest threats to our rights and freedoms as Canadians initiated by
Harper. C-51 defines threats to Canadian security so vaguely that it threatens
citizens taking action through non-violent civil disobedience and who voice
their support for such actions.

This is a big week for student politics: UVSS Student elections are this Wednesday! Undergraduate students can vote online starting at 9:00AM on March 4th. Voting closes on March 5th at 9:00AM.
The Martlet is providing a summary for student on their website. The Martlet notes in the Elections FAQ section that four referenda questions are being put forth: one question asks for a student mandate on UVic fossil fuel divestment; another asks to establish a student levy for the Students of Colour Collective; a third relates to the re-allocation of UVSS money to the Food Bank; the fourth question requests an increase in student fees to better fund the Campus Community Garden. Check out the Martlet website to get to know the issues a bit better.

Notice: You are invited to attend a public consultation on Bill C-51 with MPs Randall Garrison and Murray Rankin, UVic Professor Laurel Collins, and academic expert in constitutional law and privacy issues Reg Whitaker. Friday February 27, 2015 at 7-8:30pm First Metropolitan United Church.
It is with a genuine sense of disappointment that I rose this month to speak against Bill C-51, the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2015. This is a very significant bill that will dismantle the privacy rights of all Canadians in the name of threats to national security. It is a bill that contains definitions so broad and so far-reaching that it risks lumping together legitimate dissent with terrorism. It is dangerously vague, and most likely ineffective in confronting the threats we face. This is a bill that still lacks any direct link to the actual events we faced in October or the ongoing terrorist threats we face today.
Dasiqox Tribal Park: Nexwagwez?an - There for us

Dasiqox Tribal Park – or what we now call ‘Nexwagwez?an’ – is an expression of governance initiated by Yunesit’in and Xeni Gwet’in, supported by the Tsilhqot’in Nation. The concept of Dasiqox Tribal Park has evolved from a place of conflict, however the intention is to express through our hearts the most thoughtful aspirations of this area as a space of healing, cultural education, economic sustenance and an intact ecosystem that supports all of our activities.
Nexwagwez?an – ‘it is there for us’ – prioritizes the Tsilhqot’in in advancing a vision rooted in Tsilhqot’in values and appropriate traditional laws to ensure that the land remains to the benefit of future generations. Our approach centers the Tsilhqot’in as leaders in guiding future land use objectives that honour Tsilhqot’in knowledge, reflects plans for sustainable economies, and is supported by sound scientific research.

Standing Together to End Violence Towards Aboriginal Women and Children
VICTORIA, BC–(February 06, 2015) – Esquimalt and Songhees Territory – On February 12, 2015 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men will meet for the fourth consecutive year in Victoria, BC to stand together to end violence towards Aboriginal women and children. The Moose Hide campaign’s Annual “Gathering of Men” will take place at the Hotel Grand Pacific from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. There will be a peaceful march to the BC Legislature and a Press Conference will be held at 12:30 pm to publicly address the issue of violence towards Aboriginal women and children.
Statistically, Aboriginal women are three times more likely to experience domestic violence than non-Aboriginal women, and three times more likely than non-Aboriginal women to be killed by someone they know. Often domestic and sexual violence is not reported out fear and shame. Across Canada there are 1,200 cases of murdered and missing Aboriginal women. In BC, violence against women is an issue affecting all ethnicities and backgrounds including along the infamous and tragic Highway of Tears. The Moose Hide Campaign is calling on men across the country to stand up for those experiencing violence and to create an environment where it is safe to talk about the issue.

Dear Friend -
Sun TV may be out of business, but its far-right commentator, Ezra Levant, isn’t.
He wants to continue his attacks on Canadian progressives like you and me, and has raised thousands of dollars from Conservatives to support his online news website.
He's only been online for a few days, and already he is attacking:
- Sex education in public schools
- Women’s equality
- The NDP
- The Liberals
- Fair tax rules
- Barack Obama’s veto of the Keystone XL pipeline
- Unions supporting their communities
- Freedom of religion
This is a challenge to all of us.

Dear Friends:
Since we launched our boycott campaign last week, the response has been overwhelming and people from around the globe have told us they have sent letters to Air Canada. We need to keep the pressure up and we ask you to send an email or fax if you haven’t already done so and encourage your friends and family to do the same. More info is on our website at Boycott Air Canada and ways to contact Air Canada are at the bottom of this email.
Here are some further background notes about Israel Aerospace Industries IAI, the company that Air Canada chose for “outsourcing” some of its maintenance work. IAI is the subject of boycotts across Europe, in particular, and is well-known for its drone technology and production. It is truly shameful that Air Canada is doing business with this Israeli government-owned military defense company that is...

There has been some issues with the e-voz raise-up.net server, but they appear to be resolved.
Also, please avoid repeating event postings. Subscribers have complained about having the in-boxes full of repeated messages about the same event. [2 have cancelled their subscriptions].
REMEMBER: hitting REPLY, after receiving an e-voz posting, will send your private message to the entire list, this is another source of discontent for subscribers.
