Hi PAOV,My name’s Nicky Young. I’m part of the video team at SHD. I made this short video about myself if you’re interested in learning a bit more about me!
During the last federal election in 2011, I was 18 and about as politically motivated as the rest of the skateboarders in my small circle of friends. I don’t think any of my friends voted, which left me wondering if it was even worth it. I felt useless. Four years later I feel more empowered than I could ever have imagined. This is the story of how my life changed.Read more: My friends didnt vote in 2011, this is what Im doing about it.

The Smithsonian is allowing climate denial mega-funder David Koch to co-opt the science presented in its museums.
A particularly appalling exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History entitled the “David H. Koch Hall of Human Origins” attempts to downplay the impact of massive, rapid global climate change. The exhibit actually promotes the misleading and inaccurate premise that humans can evolve their way out of climate change.1 2

Although the Harper regime has softened some parts of its police state legislation which it rammed through Parliament recently, the fact remains that Canada is in danger of entering a dark period of repression and of the silencing of dissent. Canadians must carry on with the struggle to defend and to advance our democratic rights.
That struggle continues this Friday, 10 April at 7 PM when the Scotty Neish Club of Victoria hosts a panel session on C-51 on the UVic campus in Room C128 in the David Strong Building (see attached poster). We will be featuring a panel session including Communist Party organiser, Johan Boyden, and People's Voice editor, Kimball Cariou, who are on a cross-Canada tour to heighten awareness of the Harper's plans to criminalise opposition to his regime and to build up...

Victoria May Day Convergence & Celebration 2015
Micweekly writes:
I would like to meet with you to discuss your ideas and inspirations for a Victoria May Day Convergence 2015, on Friday, May 1st and a second day on May 2nd.
Please pass this along to persons you deem as possible stakeholders and apologize for duplicate sends as this will go to a large list.
I apologize for the delay in arranging this and its success will depend on you or your organizations involvement and volunteer power.
I'll outline the grand plan that can happen if we have enough people willing to take on their own aspect of a communal event such as hosting a table, leading a workshop or just helping with event logistics.
Here is the outline for the event as we are penciled in for Centennial Park, Downtown...

By Robert Fantina and David Swanson, World Beyond War | Op-EdOh Canada, to thine own self be true, not to thine heavily militarized neighbor.
We write to you as two U.S. citizens, one of whom moved to Canada when George W. Bush became U.S. president. Every wise observer in Texas had warned this country about their Governor Bush, but the message hadn't gotten through.
We need the message to reach you now before you follow the United States down a path it has been on since its creation, a path that used to include regular invasions of your land, a path impeded a little by your generous sanctuary for those refusing war participation, and a path that now invites you to ruin yourself along with us. Misery and addiction and illegality love company, Canada. Alone they wither, but with aiders and abettors they flourish.
Well done, BC!

April Fools’! Unfortunately, Federal “Green Budget” is not real
Dear PAOV,
Were you excited to read, in our email earlier today, about a visionary green budget proposed by the federal government? Or did you catch on right away that anything received on April 1st should likely be taken with a grain of salt? We hope you’re not offended by our little prank!
It really shouldn’t be a joke to imagine that the Canadian Government would...

Green Groups Overjoyed by New Budget Bill, Contains Everything We Ever Wanted
Dear PAOV,
If you could write the federal budget bill, what new laws would it contain? Perhaps an environmental bill of rights to protect Canadians’ rights to healthy air, water and land? Perhaps an act to ensure that all projects are assessed for their positive contributions to the environment, communities and the economy? A law to protect future generations by requiring Canada reduce its greenhouse...

Urgent solidarity rally in support of the Heiltsuk Nation - TODAY March 31st - 3pm

https://www.facebook.com/events/732117183571400/
Join us on Tuesday 3- 6pm March 31st at the Save-On-Foods 1950 Foul Bay Rd, Victoria, BC V8R 1S8 to block the store and stand in solidarity with the Heiltsuk Nation to stop the commercial sac roe fishery in area 7.
To support the Heiltsuk Nation’s opposition to the commercial herring kill-fishery, we are calling for a boycott of all businesses owned and operated by the Jim Pattison Group, which can be found on their website (http://www.jimpattison.com).
As coastal First Nations we rely on the ocean to sustain our way of life not grocery stores. The Jim Pattison Group is threating our way of life by their involvement in the commercial herring-kill fishery. The Jim Pattison Group ventured into the food industry to fulfill its stated goal: “to nourishing families”. Therefore, are asking for your support in boycotting all grocery stores owned by the Jim Pattison Group to call on Jim Pattison to uphold his stated goal to “nourishing families” by complying with the Heiltsuk Nation’s call for a sustainable fishery.
In particular, we will be boycotting their grocery stores: Overwaitea Food Group, Save-On Foods, Western Family, Quality Foods, Buy Low Foods, Nesters Market, Van-Whole Produce, Urban Fare, & Ocean Brands – to name a few.

“Many people first get involved with the Unist’ot’en Camp because our stance is clear and no nonsense – there will be no pipelines built on Unist’ot’en land. But they soon realize that the Camp is much more than just a blockade. It is a place of learning, of healing, of connecting with nature, of breaking with the legacy of colonization. Now this work will be expanded and consolidated through the establishment of a Healing Centre.
The Unist’ot’en Camp Healing Centre will have indigenous youth as its main focus. The Centre will contain counselling rooms; meeting rooms, a kitchen and dining hall and sleeping quarters.

* Why Unite Against Austerity *
All around the world – from Quebec to Greece to Chile to South Africa – tens of thousands of people are rising up against austerity.
Governments and the mainstream media say there is not enough money, and belts must be tightened. Cuts to social spending and wages ensue, while fossil fuel companies and other corporations receive subsidies. Unions are attacked. Indigenous nations are denied inherent land rights and resources from their lands are extracted. Environmental regulations are reduced. Migrant workers are forced into even more precarious working conditions. Vital public services including education, childcare, housing, women’s centers and healthcare are cut, but the prisons and military are expanding. And all of this is justified by a prevailing atmosphere of scarcity and fear.
