Greetings,

What if access to education in regenerative and ecological design, systems thinking, earth skills, entrepreneurship, and community and planetary service was as common as college? What if all college students, or for that matter, anyone wanting to do good in the world, were able to learn through this lens? What might our world look like if each of us could identify our unique gifts and design our life's work within this framework? What if those getting an "education" were mentored by a group of passionate peers, experienced practitioners, and world-class advisers who supported the clarification of their vision, and further, placed value putting coherent planning into action. We envision this world -- where each of us have the skills, support and courage to step into our authentic power on behalf of our earth and humanity.

We believe that this is not only possible, but that it is essential if we are going to create the more beautiful world that our hearts know is possible. Inspired by this vision, we recognize that our calling --as an organization-- is to create these very opportunities. Because of the experienced practitioners who are at the forefront of this work in our region, we find ourselves in a position to offer learning opportunities with top level teachers who can support the best in our students. We find great joy in offering this, not only to young people, but to people of all ages. In addition, we recognize that access to this kind of 'education' must cost a fraction of what many colleges charge. If our students are going to be of service, follow their calling in the world, and put their visions into practice -- they must be able to do so without decades of debt on their shoulders.

Carl Fritschel, Site Manager & Apprenticeship Mentor:
“I went to architecture school and was starting to get depressed about my profession, my path, and the world. Coming to Ashevillage's Natural Building program was like a full 180! I feel so inspired, alive, excited again for how I can give back and literally make my dreams come true. This was a significant experience for my soul. I learned more in one week than all my years in school, and now I can't wait to share this knowledge with others."

If what we have shared speaks to you, we encourage you to have a look at the opportunities below, pass this on, support our scholarship fund, and be in touch directly if you feel called. We'd love to work with and support you. Please consider joining us as we build the bridge between academia and what is oft referred to as "alternative education." As we see it, this will one day be the norm.

Two gateway programs in the season ahead are:
1) Eco-Urban Homestead & Building Apprenticeship
, with the Ashevillage Sanctuary
2) Permaculture School: Design Ecology & Living Skills, with Whole Earth Institute

Anne Frank Exhibition Across Vancouver

February 10, 2015 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From The Anne Frank House to Vancouver’s Neighbourhood Houses
PeerNetBC is pleased to announce a new community partnership
with Anne Frank House to bring their exhibition to Vancouver’s
Neighbourhood Houses from February 16 to June 19, 2015.

Co-Executive Director of PeerNetBC, Romi Chandra Herbert says, “On the heels of the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we are honoured to be collaborating with Anne Frank House to bring her story to Vancouver.
Anne Frank – “A History for Today” connects the horrific history of the Holocaust with the challenges our communities face today in regards to discrimination, acceptance of diversity & providing a window through dialogue to make change both here & abroad”.

The exhibition features 34 large scale panels that speak about Anne Frank’s story, World War II, and addresses themes of discrimination, acceptance, and human rights. The exhibition will be led by young people in the communities as well as partnering with seniors. They will provide space to consider challenges that they and their neighbourhoods face in embracing diversity and acceptance of difference.

In addition to hosting the exhibition, youth participants will have the opportunity to reflect on what they’ve seen in the exhibition and create short videos about their own experiences in a diverse city.

At the end of the 1960’s, numerous Swedish journalists came to the US, drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Filming for close to a decade, they gained the trust of many of the leaders of the black power movement – Stoakely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis, and Eldridge Cleaver among them – capturing them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews.
Thirty years later, this lush collection of 16mm film, peppered with footage of Black Panther activities and B-roll images of black America, was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television. Director Göran Olsson and producer Danny Glover bring this mesmerizing...

Hi All,

The following is a call to action & a invitation to get involved on the issue of missing & murdered Indigenous women. Please distribute broadly.

Fed up with feeling outraged & heartbroken over the rising number of missing & murdered Indigenous women in Canada & the Harper government's utter apathy to the issue, my friend Corie Potter & I decided to create our own little awareness poster in the lead up to the national Stolen Sisters march on February 14th.

Given that this issue is at the forefront of Indigenous communities but hugely ignored by the rest of Canadians, we decided that a poster campaign is a small act that anyone can participate in, anywhere in Canada, to bring awareness to the issue, begin conversations & apply political pressure. As well as distributing the poster in our own neighbourhoods, community centres, cafes,...

Call for Submissions: writers for our upcoming Manifesto series

Earth has a runaway fever, oceans dying, coasts flooding, species giving up the ghost. Scientists say we need to leave 80 percent of fossil fuels in the ground — yet we’re drilling faster than ever. This is a do-or-die moment for a radical course correction. If our world leaders don’t come up with a legally binding and universal agreement to address climate change in Paris this December then #worldrevolution will be the only option left.

But what does that mean?

Rise up against Bill C-51!

Friends and Comrades;
As you have heard in the news, the Harper regime is bent on railroading the so-called anti-terrorist legislation, Bill C-51, through parliament without any serious public debate on the the severe consequences it may have for the democratic rights of Canadians. Please read the attached article put out by the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of Canada - the only party in Canada that is providing any real resistance to this draconian and anti-democratic legislation.

Air Canada: We are not On-Board with Human Rights Violations

Call from BDS Vancouver-Coast Salish Committee to Boycott Air Canada

(Since we sent our original letters to Air Canada, we recently found out Air Canada also has maintenance agreements with Israel Aerospace Industries IAI, which is wholly owned by the government of Israel. The IAI company website states: “Over the past 60 years IAI delivered, supplied and supported advanced systems for the Israeli Ministry of Defense..”)
Yet another compelling reason to boycott Air Canada
.

In the last month, we have communicated twice with Air Canada officials regarding their unethical behaviour in serving Israeli products on their flights. They have refused to answer us and left us with no choice but to launch a campaign to inform people of their policies. There are...

Protecting forests and farmland from urban sprawl

Enjoying a hike in the Sooke Hills. Protecting wilderness areas
is a big benefit of urban containment.
Friend --

Right now, the Capital Regional District (CRD) is consulting residents on the Regional Sustainability Strategy (RSS), to guide land use decisions from the Saanich Peninsula to Victoria to Port Renfrew on the west coast.

The RSS will either strengthen the policy of urban containment, mandating that new housing and development be concentrated in existing population centres, or it will provide a green light to urban sprawl, extending pavement and development into the wilderness areas and farmland of the capital region.

I strongly support a policy of urban containment.

Protecting forests and farmland from urban sprawl makes sense for a number of reasons. It conserves wilderness areas for the ecological value of maintaining plant and animal habitat, protecting water quality, sequestering carbon and providing opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Urban containment also conserves farmland for present and future generations, with the capital region having a finite supply of arable land (due to mountainous terrain, constraints of the coastline, and existing development patterns). Local food systems are essential in the context of increasing global transportation costs, a changing climate and instability in the global capitalist economy.

Compact land-use patterns are also important from the standpoint of transportation, with sprawling suburbs being heavily reliant on private motor vehicles, gridlocked highways and the consumption of fossil fuels, which impacts air quality and contributes to climate change. Infrastructure of sprawling suburbs is costly to maintain, with vast networks of roads, sewers and water lines. Suburbs are also often dominated by big box and corporate retail and (because of auto-dependency) have lower rates of community participation.

I hope you will take the opportunity to contact the CRD Board expressing your views on regional land use and urban containment, by emailing This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or completing this survey before Feb. 15. Together, we can build a sustainable region that leaves no one behind and protects the natural environment. Doing so requires saying no to development in some areas and concentrating new housing within existing population centres.
