r1Dear co-readers of evoz,

Please be invited to either or both of these film-discussion-cafe evenings. But please note the need for RSVPs.

Two RON film-discussion-cafe evenings:

Thurs, Nov 27.

"Food Matters" surveys degenerative diseases and public health crisis caused by processed, nutrient-depleted food consumed in first-world nations. We recognize importance of protecting locally grown fruits and vegetables. The film describes ways to stop this cycle of destruction and restore health to ourselves and our planet.

Thurs, Dec 11.

"The Wisdom to Survive" is a film at times beautiful, at times haunting, as human's over-live the capacity of the planet, killing off species while destroying soil productivity and water. We examine the challenges of climate change in face of growth and greed by fossil fuels industry, destroying the social fabric of society for billions of people and the life support system of the planet. The film, and roundtable following, discuss meaningful action that can be...

We will be hosting the screening of a short film documenting the 2014 Turning The Tide experience. Last summer SEA helped organize a group of paddlers, swimmers, and sailors who set out on a four day expedition through the Salish Sea to join in solidarity with coastal peoples in love with the ocean and in protest of the Harper/Clark fossil fuel agenda-specifically tar sands, pipelines and oil tankers. See turningthetide.ca for the film trailer and more information on the paddle.
We are hoping to generate some donations for the raven trust and Sierra club joint initiative called pull-together.ca, aimed at raising funds for First Nations Court Cases against the pipelines. On the website you can donate to our team page, or join our team and help fundraise!

[UVic-sustainability] News and Events for the Week of November 17th

NEWS:

The tale of Mount Polley continues. According to a Vancouver Sun report last week, “the BC Information and Privacy Commissioner has agreed to investigate a second complaint [originating from the UVic Environmental Law Centre] that the B.C. government is illegally holding back documents related to the Mount Polley mine tailings dam collapse.” The Sun also noted that “the spill significantly damaged nine-kilometre-long Hazeltine Creek,” and the damage to Quesnel Lake is still unclear. The Professional Employees Association, one of the staff unions here at UVic, is suggesting that a major reasons for this incident are the cuts the number of licensed professional overseeing mining operations. The PEA suggests that their “Endangered Experts” could have prevented the watershed damage.

Dear Friends

Greetings dear Zatoun supporters and friends,
As with every year around this time, Zatoun tries to give a window on the all-important olive harvest taking place in Palestine in these weeks. The olive harvest is critical for a number of reasons: - an affirmation of Palestinian ties to the land - the remaining trees are facts on the ground - the olive provides sustenance and...

Fantasy Island: Chinese Dream and Ecological Fears in an Age of Climate Change

Presenter: Julia Sze

12:30 – 1:30 pm | UVic, Fraser Building, room 157

Ms. Sze charts how climate change discussions align with US fears of China's ascendancy and the related demise of the American Century, and she considers the motives of financial and political capital for eco-city and ecological development supported by elite power structures in the UK and China. She challenges us to see what a true eco-city would be.

[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for the Week of Nov 10th

Big news this week is the immanent municipal elections. We are happy to say that the advanced polling stations at UVic last week were reportedly well used. However, voter turnout for municipal elections is usually below 30% and so we are using this opportunity to encourage everyone to vote. These elections determine who is making decisions for our cities, and out of all levels of government, these decision makers will have the most direct effect on our lives. Local politicians make decisions on important sustainability related issues such as waste treatment, transportation, and land development and, for example, the decision to build new bike lanes in the region will have a direct effect on transportation behaviour of Students, Staff, and Faculty. What follows is a list of resources that will help reader make an...
