[Uvic-sustainability] News and Events for Week of Aug 11th

r1

NEWS

This week it’s time to celebrate sustainability in the region: there are lots of good things happening!

First, UVic was the only Canadian university to be included in the “Green Honour Roll” by the Princeton Review. The honour roll lists the top 24 institutions in Canada and the US based on their commitments to sustainability in teaching and through campus operations. Congrats UVic!

Congratulations also to UVic MBA student Andrea Hayes, who recently returned from the World Student Environmental Network conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Hayes did a fantastic job of representing the vibrant community of sustainability at UVic, and has already begun to move towards making her own unique contribution, focusing on the field of entrepreneurship and women’s rights.

UVic will be a central part of...

Hire Nature as your Gardener

In permaculture, as in everything in life, it is always a good idea
to pay attention to the foundation. Without it, there is nothing to
be built upon. In permaculture, there is always a fresh outlook
that can be taken, or a new approach to an old idea.

So whether you are a brand new beginner or a seasoned veteran,
the first video lectures in the series are invaluable to your growth.

For example, in the very first video lecture, Lecture 1 - Introduction,
we learn how permaculture expert Larry Korn originally became involved.
While at UC-Berkeley, Larry learned how destructive plowing the soil is.
The biggest problem, however, was that nobody had an alternative.

Shortly after he earned his degree, he traveled to Japan and
met Masanobu Fukuoka. Fukuoka is an integral figure in permaculture,
and Larry explains some of the principles behind his world-view.
It was with Fukuoka that Larry discovered something that changed his life.
The rice farm that Fukuoka owned had not been plowed in over 30 years,
yet it was still growing rice!

Canada can help these children

More and more people are talking about author and U of T professor Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish's proposal to bring 100 Palestinian children to Canada for desperately-needed medical attention. Lauren Lowe of Hamilton started this petition in support of the idea, and since then the Ontario government and many hospitals have agreed to help, but they still need to get Ottawa on board as well. Will you add your voice to their plea?

Stephen Harper: Bring 100 Palestinian Children to Canada for Desperately Needed Medical Attention

Lauren Lowe
Hamilton, Canada Sign Lauren's Petition

Many Canadians have been watching in helpless horror the unfolding of events in Gaza and the unfathomable suffering endured by the children who are trying to survive there.

We respectfully urge all Canadian hospitals to add their names to the list of Ontario Hospitals who have already reached out in compassion to offer treatment to Palestinian children who desperately need help.

We also respectfully request that the Federal and Provincial governments aid in these efforts.

Act now to protect Grace Islet burial ground

r1

Ben paddling around Grace Islet, June 2014

I am writing to ask that you take a few minutes to take a stand with First Nations and Salt Spring Island residents who are concerned about the desecration of an indigenous burial ground at a place called Grace Islet in Ganges Harbour.

Construction is underway on a private residence, authorized by a provincial Site Alteration Permit and a CRD building permit, but elders, chiefs and grassroots members of the W̱SÁNEĆ and Hul'qumi'num Nations have demanded that work stop and that the site be protected.

I have served notice of motion to the Capital Regional District Board, calling for the CRD to legally expropriate Grace Islet for the public purpose of protecting the burial ground, with fair-market compensation provided to the registered owner under the provisions of the Expropriation Act.

It will take substantial pressure on CRD directors to move forward with acquisition of this property when the motion is considered at the Board's next meeting on August 13. Please Sign this Petition and share this message with your contacts.

This issue has become a flash point in indigenous-non-indigenous relations, and we can be part of the solution. Please let me know if there are other ways you can help support First Nations and Salt Spring residents in their stand for Grace Islet.

To learn more about Grace Islet, listen to this CBC radio interview, then sign and share the petition.

In solidarity,

Ben

BCRAD and PeerNetBC present: Reimagining Accessibility

PeerNetBC & BCRAD(British Columbia Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf) are pleased to present -

Reimagining Accessibility: What can contemporary understandings of disability teach us about access?

While theories of disability have been rapidly advancing over the past few decades, implementation of these ideas as accessibility practices has largely not kept pace. As a result, standard accessibility practices do not entirely provide community organizers and healthcare providers with the resources to become inclusive of ability. This workshop looks at current models of disability, the history of accessibility, and the ways disabled people define identity in order to determine sociocultural barriers surrounding people with disabilities. Participants will be presented with a purview of current ideas and issues around accessibility, and asked to contribute ideas in a subsequent discussion around making accessibility more inclusive.
