Act now to protect Grace Islet burial ground

I am writing to ask that you take a few minutes to take a stand with First Nations and Salt Spring Island residents who are concerned about the desecration of an indigenous burial ground at a place called Grace Islet in Ganges Harbour.
Construction is underway on a private residence, authorized by a provincial Site Alteration Permit and a CRD building permit, but elders, chiefs and grassroots members of the W̱SÁNEĆ and Hul'qumi'num Nations have demanded that work stop and that the site be protected.
I have served notice of motion to the Capital Regional District Board, calling for the CRD to legally expropriate Grace Islet for the public purpose of protecting the burial ground, with fair-market compensation provided to the registered owner under the provisions of the Expropriation Act.
It will take substantial pressure on CRD directors to move forward with acquisition of this property when the motion is considered at the Board's next meeting on August 13. Please Sign this Petition and share this message with your contacts.
This issue has become a flash point in indigenous-non-indigenous relations, and we can be part of the solution. Please let me know if there are other ways you can help support First Nations and Salt Spring residents in their stand for Grace Islet.
To learn more about Grace Islet, listen to this CBC radio interview, then sign and share the petition.
In solidarity,
Ben

BCRAD and PeerNetBC present: Reimagining Accessibility
PeerNetBC & BCRAD(British Columbia Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf) are pleased to present -
Reimagining Accessibility: What can contemporary understandings of disability teach us about access?
While theories of disability have been rapidly advancing over the past few decades, implementation of these ideas as accessibility practices has largely not kept pace. As a result, standard accessibility practices do not entirely provide community organizers and healthcare providers with the resources to become inclusive of ability. This workshop looks at current models of disability, the history of accessibility, and the ways disabled people define identity in order to determine sociocultural barriers surrounding people with disabilities. Participants will be presented with a purview of current ideas and issues around accessibility, and asked to contribute ideas in a subsequent discussion around making accessibility more inclusive.

Survival reveals 'five faces of genocide' for UN Indigenous Day

To mark UN Indigenous Day on August 9, Survival International, the global movement for tribal peoples’ rights, reveals five tribal peoples who have been victims of genocide during the 20th century – and warns of a potential genocide in the 21st.
Tribal peoples subjected to genocidal violence include*:
- The Aché, Paraguay: in a landmark case launched in April 2014, the Aché tribe took Paraguay’s government to court over the genocide they suffered. The Aché were decimated after colonists launched killing raids, captured tribespeople and sold them as slaves during the 1950s and 60s.
- The Akuntsu, Brazil: in 1985, government investigators uncovered an entire communal house which had been bulldozed – evidence of a brutal massacre by gunmen that killed most of the Akuntsu tribe. The five survivors are the last witnesses of this silent genocide.

- The Jummas, Bangladesh: the Bangladesh military and a wave of settlers carried out a genocidal campaign of murder, rape, torture and the torching of Jumma villages. A peace deal in 1997 put an end to the worst atrocities, but killings, the burning of Jumma villages, the theft of their land and arrests remain rampant.

- The Yanomami, on the border of Brazil and Venezuela: in 1993, goldminers launched a brutal attack on the Yanomami village of Haximú, killing 16 Yanomami, including the elderly, women and children. In an unprecendented ruling, four of the culprits were subsequently convicted of genocide.

NOTE: Excellent article by Stephen Hume on the Polly Mine spill. The connections to the proposed Raven Coal Mine are obvious. If the Raven Mine Project was approved, what guarantees would be in place to ensure the sediment/tailings ponds would be adequately monitored to prevent a spill into the Cowie Creek watershed and Baynes Sound?

UVic’s AVP of Finance Kristi Simpson was interviewed regarding the recent grant UVic received from the province for a geothermal heating and cooling system for the new CARSA building. The funding is part of a new program where post-secondary institutions can apply to receive some money back from carbon offset payments made as part of the government’s Carbon Neutral Government program. I signed a petition to The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate, and President Barack Obama which says:
"The Obama Administration and Congress should use all means at their disposal to end the war and lift the economic blockade in Gaza. The U.S., Israel, and Egypt should trade a permanent end to rockets and other attacks from Gaza for a permanent end to Israeli and Egyptian restrictions on Gaza’s economy and on the movement of Palestinians into and out of Gaza.
