Palm oil

Oreo cookies and Toblerone bars come with a bad palm oil aftertaste. From deforestation to land grab, the palm oil industry is as dirty as it gets. The good thing is, Oreo maker Mondelēz wants to be a sustainability champion, so let’s push it to become one before it changes its mind.
Sylvia,
Oreo maker Mondelēz claims it’s “made snacking right” using only sustainable palm oil. But this is just a marketing smokescreen trying to cover up a supply chain so complicated and opaque, it’s darker than an Oreo! Meanwhile, the candy giant dreams of being a sustainability champion and together, we can make this dream come true.
Mondelēz has already cut ties with many big, bad palm oil producers – but there are too...

The end of the Amazon forest?
- Details

Sylvia,
The Amazon is speeding toward a point of no return — scientists say if 20% of the forest is lost, it will set off a domino chain that will cause the whole ecosystem to collapse.
18% of the forest is now gone. Local communities are crying out after 3 years of drought. We should be in red alert.
Yet the worst offenders behind the climate forces destroying the Amazon – a rotten, predatory financial industry that has poured an astounding $4.6 trillion into fossil fuels in the last few years alone – are flying completely under the radar. Their profits are even soaring!
We’re going to change that. We have a crack team ready to hit the ground running – to expose the big banks’ responsibility for this Amazon emergency, then run massive campaigns in the media and with shareholders to force them to change. We’ll shine the spotlight on them like never before.
It could be...

The Intercept is being sued by billionaire mercenary Erik Prince. Again.
Prince, founder of the private security firm Blackwater, had his first defamation lawsuit against The Intercept tossed out of court. But instead of giving up, he refiled his case in another jurisdiction, and it was dismissed again.
Now, he’s filed a third time over the exact same story.
This is the weaponization of libel law: billionaires using their deep pockets to threaten the news media and chill journalism. Prince’s legal harassment has cost The Intercept more than $200,000 in outside legal fees as well as countless and seemingly never-ending hours by our legal department.

It’s official: DFO is investigating Coastal GasLink for what, by all accounts, was a blatant disregard for salmon and steelhead habitat in Lho Kwa (the Clore River).
It took a federal regulator stepping in to get the company’s attention. Up until now, the province has handed out warnings and fines, but the company continued to break environmental rules.
To protect salmon eggs, the federal regulator needs to issue a stop work order so fishery officers and Wet’suwet’en rangers can conduct a proper investigation — and hold Coastal GasLink accountable.
But this recent flouting of the rules is not...

Tell House leadership to give C-SPAN full-time control of the cameras in Congress now

As Americans across the nation witnessed the GOP’s brutal infighting during the recent election for speaker of the House of Representatives, one crucial press freedom issue became clear: We must grant C-SPAN full-time control of the cameras in the House.
Right now, leadership in the House holds the reins on the cameras that film proceedings on the floor — but C-SPAN brought their own cameras to the House speaker battle.
This independent coverage gave viewers and journalists a glimpse of the dealmaking that House leadership would rather keep behind the curtains — helping outlets from the Washington Post to The Intercept dig into the real machinery of congressional power. It must be allowed to continue.
Granting...

Paov,
The Trudeau government is set to unveil Just Transition legislation early this year, and Big Oil is already on the defensive. Their political ally, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has been waging a war against Ottawa’s plan before it has even been released, spewing misinformation and sowing fear.1
The good news is, the media and public are paying attention to the Just Transition conversation more than ever before. This is a critical moment for our movement to lift up our vision for what a truly just transition to clean energy looks like.
Paov, the Liberal government has a track record of acknowledging the climate emergency while delaying critical climate action. They have been promising Just Transition legislation for years, and now that it’s around the corner they are already signalling that it won’t be as ambitious as many people expect.2 We can’t let them get away with half measures, delays and concessions to Big Oil at this crucial moment. We know...
