Racist Violence Can’t Be Separated from the Violence of Neoliberal Capitalism
Henry A. Giroux
"I don’t see an American Dream; I see an American Nightmare" -- Malcolm X.
As a renewed Black Lives Matter uprising fills the streets following a spate of high-profile police murders, the state-sanctioned murder of Black people continues on other fronts as well, including public health and economic injustice. In addition to protesting the widespread killing of Black people by police, activists have called attention to the systematic abandonment of Black communities as a function of both white supremacy and neoliberal capitalism. While some mainstream voices have focused on condemning the looting happening in the streets, many activists have called attention to the much larger-scale looting perpetrated by neoliberal capitalism against marginalized communities.
At this historic moment, the pandemic of racist violence cannot be separated from the violence imposed by neoliberal capitalism. The walls and cement barriers now surrounding Trump’s White House signify both the infectious ruthlessness that produces police violence at home and abroad, and the war waged...

Palm oil revolution

Great news, A:
We've scored another palm oil victory, thanks to you!
Earlier this year, your pressure got Pepsi to change its ways and unveil an industry-leading palm oil sourcing policy. Now you and I are leveraging a shareholder revolution against KFC and Pizza Hut owner Yum! Brands -- the largest fast food company in the world -- for its weak stance on deforestation.
We crashed Yum!'s biggest meeting of the year to present a shareholder proposal to get deforestation off the fast food giant's menus. And despite all of Yum's efforts to silence us, we won 35 percent of the vote -- 3 percent more than last year!
KFC execs are shook, and it all thanks to generous donations from SumOfUs members -- and without your continued support will won't be able to force KFC and Yum! Brands into action. Please, will you join our monthly donors and help keep our rainforests safe from Yum! Brands?
This is huge. Yum! advised against our proposal and even had its lawyers ask the US Securities and Exchange Commission...

Oppose the Return to Fare Enforcement on the TTC
Free Transit Toronto
In Toronto, Jane Finch Action Against Poverty (JFAAP) has long made the link between transit fare enforcement and racism. TTCriders also connect transit advocacy and anti-racism, emphasizing that transit underfunding and transit enforcement has especially negative consequences for Black people. They reiterate their longstanding demand for adequate transit funding and criticize the TTC’s decision to reinstate fare enforcement on Toronto transit routes on July 2, a decision that will hit hard the essential workers who have faced both the pandemic and overcrowding, particularly on suburban bus routes.
Like JFAAP and TTCriders, Free Transit Toronto opposes the return to fare enforcement.
Like many organizers across Toronto, Canada, and the US, we also support the demands to defund police forces that have proliferated across the globe following the revolts and mass mobilizations in late May and early June in support of Regis Korchinksi-Paquet, George Floyd, Adama Traoré, and countless others.

Global resistance: From Minneapolis to Melbourne, from Lagos to London, historic protests in defence of Black lives have swept cities across the globe. The movement shows no signs of slowing, with more actions planned for Juneteenth, which commemorates the anniversary of the end of slavery in the U.S this Friday. The demands to defund the police in favour of investing in Black communities have seen radical progress – and it’s sparking serious reckoning with colonialist legacies and systemic racism everywhere. Billions of bees dead

A, have you heard about almond milk's deadly secret?
Danone and Blue Diamond -- the makers of Silk, Alpro and Almond Breeze -- rely on billions of bees to pollinate their almond orchards. And every year, more and more of those bees die -- killed by pesticides, parasites or disease in the "toxic chemical soup" of California's central valley.
Both corporations have made tidy profits off the Covid-19 pandemic as customers stockpiled cartons -- now it's up to you and me to make sure that money gets invested in making their vegan milk good for all, bees included.
Sign the urgent petition for bee-friendly almond milk!
Earlier this year, thousands of SumOfUs members demanded Danone and Blue Diamond switch to a 100 percent bee-friendly almond supply chain. Blue Diamond -- a notorious friend of the pesticide lobby -- didn't respond.
But Danone seemed to be working towards a more bee-friendly production process for both the California almonds in Silk and the Mediterranean ones in Alpro. With 200,000 SumOfUs members watching the French giant, a commitment to more ambitious targets and...

Ontario Bill 175 Should Be Scrapped:
Ford’s New Home Care Bill Will Compound the Pandemic Disaster
Ontario Health Coalition
Bill 175 is the new home care law of the Conservative Doug Ford government. It proposes to gut existing home and community care legislation, dismantles public oversight and parcels out currently public home care functions to an array of providers including for-profit companies. Excerpts from The Ontario Health Coalition Submission on Bill 175, Connecting People to Home and Community Care Act 2020 to the Standing Committee on the Legislative Assembly (June 15, 2020) follow.
Bill 175 is so misguided and flawed that it is irredeemable. The process by which this Bill was created was profoundly undemocratic. Key advocacy groups, client representatives, workers’ and health professionals’ representatives were not included in consultations prior to its drafting. The Bill as written reflects the interests and priorities of provider corporations (the majority of which are for-profit) over and against the public interest.
This Bill was rushed through First and Second Reading in the Legislature in ten business days with...

COVID-19 and Patriarchy in the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife
Salimah Valiani
In an effort to shed light on the vital but undervalued labour of predominantly female health professionals, the World Health Organization named 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.
It is an irony and a sickening reality that 2020 turned out to be the year when nurses and other health workers would be pushed to utter vulnerability in the effort to manage COVID-19. Nurses, the only health professionals who are on hospital floors for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, around the world -- along with hospital cleaners and community health workers -- are some of the most important health workers at this time.
Nevertheless, in keeping with the culture of taking these predominantly female workers for granted and undermining their professional knowledge, nurses and others are struggling for protective gear and other supplies crucial to caring for patients.

Friends,
We only have 5 days left to flood the federal government’s online COVID-19 recovery consultations with calls for a Just Recovery.
That’s why, this Wednesday at 4:00 pm PDT/5:00 pm MDT/ 6:00 pm CDT/ 7:00 pm EDT/ 8:00 pm ADT, I’m holding a mass call where hundreds of us can file our submissions together.
Up until Friday, the vast majority of submissions to this process were from fossil fuel companies, big banks, and massive corporations. But over the last few days, hundreds of people have taken action to demand a Just Recovery that works for people, not big polluters.
We have to keep the pressure up to make sure that the government hears us loud and clear: people everywhere want Canada to build back better after the pandemic. It’s up to all of us to flood this process with submissions, and encourage our family and friends to do the same.
On Wenesday’s call we will walk through how to file a submission to the government portal. Then, we will all take...
Pronouns and why they matter

Dear BCCLA Supporter,
You may have noticed a change in our recent emails to you. We’ve added our pronouns to our signatures in our emails, and it’s important that we’re clear with you about why we made that change.
Our Two-Spirit, trans, and non-binary community members already have a deep understanding of pronouns. This email is specifically for those of our community members who don’t know about this practice. We hope this serves as an explanation and the beginning of more conversations about gender and inclusion.
We acknowledge and honour that there are multiple genders. We want to avoid reinforcing the idea that there are only two genders by defaulting to she/he pronouns. It’s also important that we don’t make assumptions about which pronouns people use based on their appearance or how their name sounds.
It’s important that everyone, not just trans people, understand pronouns and why they matter. Using someone’s pronouns is a way to respect them and...

Health Workers: From Praise to Protection
Sam Gindin
Crises sometimes bring out the best in society, and sometimes -- or even at the same time -- they clarify what is so darkly wrong within. In the particular case of the commitments and risks taken by the front-line workers that we apparently value so deeply now, the contrast lies in how little they were valued before. And even now as so many praise these workers, the response falls so wretchedly short of protecting them as best we collectively can.
Of the many dilemmas that emerged from the sudden, if not completely surprising, surfacing of the pandemic, one was a shortage of personal protective equipment. This was particularly so in regard to N95 masks. The Canadian government had ordered over 100 million such masks when the crisis broke out but -- stunningly -- less than two million were delivered in useable form. With international supply chains disrupted, international competition for such masks so intense, and US President Donald Trump threatening to limit the export of such...

Before we go public, we need a top scientist to confirm our findings -- because Bayer-Monsanto will attack us hard. Can you chip in CA$95 for an expert scientific review?
A,
Glyphosate is not safe -- and now we have proof.
A team of independent scientists we’re working with has been sweating over industry-funded studies used to “prove” glyphosate is safe to spray all over our fields.
And surprise: the studies are full of serious methodological mistakes and inconclusive evidence.
BUT, we can't go public with our findings until we’re sure Bayer-Monsanto can’t pick them apart.
A careful check from a top statistician should ensure we’re good to go -- and demolish forever the idea that glyphosate is “safe”.
A, could you chip in CA$95 to hire a top statistician?

The Pandemic and the Need for a New Society
Raju Das
During the on-going pandemic, humanity’s suffering has increased enormously. To date, June 13, 2020, 7.78 million people in the world have contracted the coronavirus, and 429,000 have died. In the richest and most powerful country in the world, more than 2.12 million cases have been reported, with 116,929 deaths. The adverse effects of the pandemic are massive, including loss of income and employment opportunities. Healthcare workers have been valiantly doing their work, often without proper protective equipment, which is in short supply even if resources are potentially available to produce them in adequate amounts. Years of funding cuts have created a healthcare system that is singularly unable to face a public health emergency. In many countries, workers are being forced by their bosses to go to work under unsafe working conditions, where they are exposed to the risk of the virus.
While the more affluent classes can choose to comfortably stay at home, millions of wage-dependent women and men are caught between a...
