your Loblaws gift card

For 14 years, Loblaws fixed the price of bread and ripped off Canadians. Its secret is out and is hoping a $25 gift card will fix everything. But it is making Canadians submit sensitive personal information just to access their gift card.

This is the last straw. Tell Loblaw's CEO to stop demanding personal information and give a fair payback to Canadians.

A,

For years, Loblaws fixed the price of bread, a staple food for many Canadian families. When its secret got out it offered a limited amount of $25 gift cards to try to gloss over this massive PR nightmare. But now that...

That was big!

This is what people power looks like. On Friday, the Leadnow community joined forces with 350.org and dozens of local groups to pull off over 60 snap actions across the country, in support of the Indigenous-led resistance to the Kinder Morgan pipeline.

Thousands gathered at MP offices coast to coast, and then went inside to deliver water collected along the BC coastline, to highlight the risk of oil spills.

Thousands more joined in on social media to amplify our message and took to the phones to give MPs the message directly.

Your Day of Action made headlines, with dozens of local news stories, and national coverage from the CBC and the Canadian Press. [1,2]

48 hours left to stop website blocking

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

The next 48 hours could shape the future of the Internet in Canada for generations to come.

That’s how long is left to say no to Bell’s reckless attempt to censor our Internet by implementing a website blocking system.

Bell’s proposal to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) could open the floodgates to widespread Internet censorship.1 If we don’t speak out now, the proposal will give Big Telecom the power to censor what you see online — without...

Bells finally done it

A,

Time is running out to protect net neutrality in Canada and stop Bell's dangerous plan to censor the internet. We have just four days to get comments in to the CRTC and let them know that Canadians want a free and open internet, not one controlled by a handful of unaccountable corporations.

Will you help us flood the CRTC with comments and protect free and open internet in Canada?

Thanks for all you do,
Emma and the SumOfUs team

Bell’s finally put forward its plan to end net neutrality in Canada.

Tell the CRTC to reject this dangerous plan and protect free and open internet.

A New Strategy for Higher Education

Hugo Radice

In the British Labour Party’s 2017 election manifesto, the pledges to abolish university tuition fees and reintroduce maintenance grants were widely seen as vote winners, but that was the extent of the party’s policy commitments toward the sector. Since the election, Labour has supported staff and students in challenging the yawning gap between highly-paid vice-chancellors and principals on the one hand, and part-time academic staff whose work is extremely insecure and poorly paid; and it has supported the industrial action that academic and administrative staff in UCU have taken in defence of their pension rights.

Important though these issues are, Labour’s policies need to be based on a much more comprehensive analysis of the problems in...

Marielle Franco Is Still with Us

Open Society Foundations Marielle Franco with a microphone © Mídia NINJA
Earlier this month, Marielle Franco, a strident defender of Rio de Janeiro’s marginalized communities, and one of the few black and female politicians in Brazil, was murdered. It was a tragic end to an inspiring career. Franco came from one of Rio’s largest favelas, and in 2016 she launched an “outsider” campaign that took her all the way to the city’s municipal chamber. She was a fearless critic of police brutality and racial profiling, and she was a tireless campaigner for the empowerment of black women. Franco’s murderers remain at large, but the global expression of solidarity which followed news of her death has already revealed their failure. Marielle may be gone, but her example, and the vision of the future for which she fought, are here to stay.

Fight For $15: The Challenges Ahead

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 28 February 2018

Fight For $15: The Challenges Ahead

After nearly three years of organizing, protesting, striking, and lobbying, the Fight for $15 and Fairness secured a huge victory with the passage of Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, on November 22, 2017.

Bill 148 implements the quickest timeline to a $15 minimum wage in North America. It also ushers in a host of other labour law reforms such as expanded emergency leave days, paid leave days, elimination of doctors’ notes, fair scheduling provisions, equal pay for equal work, and card-check and successor rights in certain sectors.

However, these gains are not set in stone, and several employers and their right-wing sympathizers have already mounted an attack in order to reverse this major achievement.

CRTC failed. Over to you, Minister Bains

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

Yesterday, our federal regulator turned down a huge opportunity to lower your cell phone bill.1

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) rejected a proposal to create more competition in our wireless markets.2 It was a big win for the Big Three, and yet another loss for everyday Canadians.

Now, it’s time to turn to the federal government to step in. Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains has said that the high prices Canadians face for mobile service is “unacceptable.”3

Workers Need an Industrial Policy Not Tariffs

Workers Need an Industrial Policy Not Tariffs

UE General Executive Board

President Trump’s recent announcement that he intends to impose a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum is not a new or effective strategy for reviving American manufacturing. George W. Bush imposed tariffs on steel in 2002 and quietly removed them after only 18 months. Protectionist measures in a capitalist economy of global "free" trade are not adequate tools for building a sustainable U.S. infrastructure and improving the lives of workers.

What American workers need is not partial half-measures, but a trade and industrial policy that is based on international cooperation, respect for workers’ rights, and environmental sustainability – one that raises living standards for workers across industries and across...
