"Before all else a revolutionist":
Marx and the Question of Strategy

Michael Brie

The multiple crises of capitalism go hand in hand with the multiple crises of the left. And amidst these crises, we find ourselves commemorating the 200th birthday of Karl Marx and the 150th anniversary of the publication of the first volume of Capital. But how are we to treat Marx and his works? How important is he for us today -- for our capacity to transform the world in practice?

Reading through the flood of new publications, one cannot help but think that the reception of Marx’s works fails to see the proverbial living forest for all the trees that have been felled. Painting Marx as a lone thinker, seconded by...

Will Canada ban plastics?

Canada has just introduced a new bill that would take on plastics pollution from corporations like McDonalds and Nestlé in a huge way.

Tell Canadian politicians to vote yes for bill M-151.

Sign the Petition

A,

Canadians toss out a massive amount of plastic every year, including almost 3 billion plastic bags. Much of this plastic ends up in the ocean where it causes serious harm to marine animals: straws stuck up sea turtles nostrils, plastic debris starving seabirds and tiny microplastics entering the food chain.

Corporations, like McDonald’s and Nestlé, are major contributors to single-use plastic pollution but have yet to heed the call to stop using plastics....

CUPE 3903: Rally for Public Education

For the second time in three years, CUPE 3903 -- representing contract faculty, TAs and GAs at York University -- has been forced to go on strike. The fight for accessible education and job security at York University is not an isolated phenomenon. Whether it’s striking workers in the Ontario college system or at Carleton University, students in Chicago resisting school closures, public school teachers in Kentucky and Oklahoma struggling for decent working conditions, or young people across the U.S. engaged in walkouts to protest gun violence, one thing is clear: we are all part of the same movement to create an accessible education system that respects its teachers and students.

The wave of unrest at York University and beyond...

Shaking in their boots

This is HUGE. In response to growing opposition, Kinder Morgan announced yesterday that they’ve frozen spending on their Trans Mountain pipeline and suspended “non-essential” construction activities.[1]

This fight is far from over -- but one thing is clear: the people-powered movement against Kinder Morgan has them shaking in their boots.

On Thursday, the Leadnow community joined forces with SumOfUs, 350.org and local allies to derail Justin Trudeau’s $1000-plate fundraiser in Vancouver with a hard-hitting Kinder Morgan protest.

Back off Trudeau, respect Indigenous rights and BC's no to Kinder Morgan

Argentine Newspapers Recuperated by Workers’ Cooperatives

Carolina de Assis

At the end of 2001, Argentina’s political and economic crisis was the main theme in Latin American news coverage. The economic recession that culminated in intense popular protests and the resignation of then-president Fernando de la Rúa also fostered a peculiar phenomenon: that of companies recuperated by their workers.

Since then, the formation of workers’ cooperatives to recuperate companies about to close their doors or which have already declared bankruptcy has occurred more frequently in the country, especially in the textile and metalworking sectors. However, in the last two years and for the first time, media outlets were the majority of companies recuperated in Argentina in the period, according to a survey of the Open...

BREAKING: Kinder Morgan suspends "non-essential spending"

Oops -- there was an error for some of our supporters. r1

Dear Friends,

Yesterday, we sent the e-mail below inviting you to sign a petition to Trudeau, but due to a technical error, many of you weren't able to sign it. The link has been fixed.

In case you weren't able to sign earlier, visit the petition page now to tell Trudeau and his ministers to end their support for the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline.

Apologies for the confusion,

Atiya

Friends,

Earlier today we heard some big news. Kinder Morgan announced it was stopping all “non-essential” spending on the TransMountain tar sands pipeline. This announcement follows weeks of historic resistance to this pipeline all across the country -- from almost 200 arrests at the Kinder Morgan tank farm gates on Burnaby Mountain to distributed actions at...

Are you on Facebook? Your data was stolen

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

Facebook just made the stunning admission that 100 percent of its 2 billion users have likely had their personal data stolen by “malicious actors.”1

That’s right. One hundred percent. If you’re on Facebook, then it’s a virtual lock that your data has been stolen.

This is a massive privacy violation on a global scale, and it’s clear that Facebook simply can’t be trusted with the massive amount of data that they’ve allowed to be stolen and used to manipulate our...

Madrid Repression of the Catalan Movement: Call for International Solidarity

International Appeal From Catalonia

The Spanish state’s repression against Catalonia’s democratic rights gets worse every day. There are at this moment 10 leading politicians and activists in prison, without having been condemned of any crime. They are accused of violent rebellion, although they have never used violence. By mid April the two leaders of the main Catalanist organizations, Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sánchez, will have spent 6 months in prison.

And apart from the 10 political prisoners and 6 political leaders in exile, from 1 October until now there have been: 1,500 people injured while voting or demonstrating; 150 fascist attacks; 140 web sites closed; police attacks on journalists; censorship of rappers, writers and...

BREAKING: Kinder Morgan suspends "non-essential spending"

We saw a big win today for the movement against the Kinder Morgan pipeline. r1

Friends,

Earlier today we heard some big news. Kinder Morgan announced it was stopping all “non-essential” spending on the TransMountain tar sands pipeline. This announcement follows weeks of historic resistance to this pipeline all across the country -- from almost 200 arrests at the Kinder Morgan tank farm gates on Burnaby Mountain to distributed actions at Liberal MP offices from coast to coast.

This is a win for people power, for the planet, and for Indigenous rights. However, it’s not the end. If anything, this is a new beginning.

Kinder Morgan has announced it will take until May 31st to try and restore investor confidence in its project. Clearly, this Texas-based oil company is presenting the Trudeau government with an ultimatum to trample over the people...

Contradictions of Pension Fund Capitalism

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 29 March 2018

Contradictions of Pension Fund Capitalism

Kevin Skerrett and Chris Roberts discuss the significance of their edited book, The Contradictions of Pension Fund Capitalism (Cornell University Press, 2018). Heather Whiteside and Janice Folk-Dawson speak to the issues the book raises for the trade union and working class movements today.

It is often hoped and assumed that union stewardship of pension investments will produce tangible and enduring benefits for workers and their communities while minimizing the negative effects of what are now global and intensely competitive capital markets. At the core of this book is a desire to question the proposition that workers and their organizations can exert meaningful control over pension funds in the context of current financial markets. Contributing authors review the recent experience of pension...

Plastics

A,

I have two very exciting updates to share with you about our campaigns to stop plastic pollution from McDonald’s and Starbucks. In a nutshell: We’re winning!

McDonald’s ditches plastic straws in the UK!

Yes! You read that right. Just last week, the fast food multinational announced that it would start phasing out plastic straws from its UK restaurants in May!

Since last year, SumOfUs members from all over the world have been urging McDonald’s to ditch plastic straws. More than 388,000 of you have signed the petition, you sent over 21,000 emails to McDonald’s executives, and you shared videos and images on social media thousands upon thousands of times. Thank you!

When we met with McDonald’s lawyers in February, they told us that they had heard your message loud and clear -- and now we’re seeing action.

Ditching straws in the UK is a great start, but McDonald’s...

Off the Map: Disabilities and Just Mobility

Off the Map: Disabilities and Just Mobility

Alex Birnel and Meagan Day

In rankings of the U.S.’s best urban public transportation systems, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Boston, and New York usually hover at the top. At the bottom are smaller and poorer cities like Buffalo, Cleveland, Omaha, and Oklahoma City. The overall takeaway is no surprise: well-resourced cities have better public transit systems than their more economically distressed counterparts.

For people with physical disabilities, this poses a dilemma. Because many disabilities preclude walking long distances and/or driving, and because accessible private transportation options are often expensive, access to public transport is critical for many disabled people to get around. But the cities that are most financially equipped to build and maintain fast, time-reliable public...
