Basic Income: Progressive Cloak and Neoliberal Dagger

John Clarke

For almost three decades, the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) has been fighting against neoliberal austerity, especially that aspect of it that has involved systematically degrading systems of income support. The underlying motive in this attack has been to render benefit provision as inadequate and precarious as possible so as to create the desperation that can drive people into the expanding low wage sector.

In this situation, the notion has taken hold that the solution is a clean start, with income support restructured along the lines of a system of basic income. Given our bitter experiences, we might have been expected to respond favourably to this development. However, as we looked at the idea of...

Solidarity with the Great Return March in Gaza

Socialist Project

The members of the Socialist Project wish to express solidarity with the Palestinian "Great Return March" in Gaza, in addition to the ongoing non-violent movement in the West Bank against Israeli occupation and colonization. This movement, and international solidarity efforts in support of it, represents the most hopeful path to end the Israeli occupation and colonization of Palestinian land. As the occupation is carried out with the crucial support of the Canadian and U.S. governments, it is the duty of citizens in these countries to support the Palestinian struggle for human rights.

On March 30, the Israeli military perpetrated what appears to have been a deliberate massacre of non-violent demonstrators in Gaza, killing at...

Paris Climate Goals Depend on Promoting Biodiversity

Ashley Braun

A sweeping new report released on March 23rd emphasizes just how intertwined the challenges of climate change and loss of biodiversity truly are.

The Paris Climate Agreement and several other United Nations (UN) pacts "all depend on the health and vitality of our natural environment in all its diversity and complexity," said Dr. Anne Larigauderie, executive secretary of the UN-backed organization behind the report. "Acting to protect and promote biodiversity is at least as important to achieving these commitments and to human well-being as is the fight against global climate change."

The report comes from the efforts of more than 550 scientists in over 100 nations, corralled by an organization often dubbed "the IPCC...

NAFTA is a Bill of Rights for Capital

LeftStreamed:

NAFTA is a Bill of Rights for Capital

Interview with Richard Roman.

Dr. Richard Roman, co-author of Continental Crucible: Big Business, Workers and Unions in the Transformation of North America (in Spanish) discusses how the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) deepened and ‘constitutionalized’ neoliberal reforms already underway, how migrant labour actually winds up subsidizing the United States, and concludes with a discussion of how the bi-national nature of the Mexican working class creates the possibility of international solidarity, or “continental integration from below.”

He was interviewed by Colin Mooers and Kurt Hackbarth of MexElects.

Air Canada scandal

Warning: trigger alert — this may be very difficult to read as the content refers to sexual harassment.

Air Canada flight attendants just filed a groundbreaking complaint to the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

The airline is allegedly instructing flight attendants to dress to "show more cleavage", model new uniforms, and "strut their stuff" -- and face humiliating and objectifying physical critiques on the job. This needs to end now.

History has been made by the Kinder Morgan resistance.

We will remember March 2018 as a month when history was made. r1

Friends,

Years from now, people are going to look back at March 2018 as a moment when history was made.

For anyone with a social media account or with eyes on any national media outlet, in the last few weeks, you’ve seen a wave of enormous, inspiring, and historic resistance to the Kinder Morgan TransMountain pipeline. For all that you have done to support this fight on the land, on the streets, at your MP office, online, and in spirit, I thank you.

It all started on March 10th when 10,000 people marched in solidarity with Coast Salish spiritual leaders who simultaneously built a watch house -- a structure used by their people for generations to watch over enemies -- on the path of the Kinder...

Cambridge Analytica

It has shown the world the incredible scale of how social media companies and data brokers are harvesting and exploiting the private social media activity of millions of people around the world.1

France: Unions, Left Confront Macron’s Attacks on Rail Services and Jobs

Dick Nichols

France is once again on the brink of an all-out industrial war -- and its outcome could transform the country’s political landscape. The showdown is over the plans that President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Edouard Philippe have for the state-owned National Railway Company (SNCF), which have been described by Le Monde as "the biggest change for the SNCF since its founding in 1937."

The stakes in the fight are huge: France’s 150,000 rail workers could suffer a defeat like that of Britain’s miners under Margaret Thatcher. On the other hand, Philippe could suffer the same fate as former PM Alain Juppe, whose 1995 economic "reform" was trashed by a vast...

Big Oil presents on federal water and energy laws at committee hearings
Early February, the Liberal government introduced Bill C-69, An Act to enact the Impact Assessment Act and the Canadian Energy Regulator Act, to amend the Navigation Protection Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts, which in its current form would make sweeping changes to Canada’s water, environmental and energy legislation.

Why does Trump oppose Chapter 11, support higher...
