Imperialism Today: A Critical Assessment of Latin American Dependency Theory

Brazilian economist and sociologist Ruy Mauro Marini (1932-1997) was a prime exponent of what became known as dependency theory, an attempt to explain the systemic unequal relations of the Latin American countries in particular with the developed economies of the imperialist "North." He was a close collaborator of, among others, Vânia Bambirra and the recently-deceased Theotónio Dos Santos. Marini’s best-known work, first published in Spanish in 1972, is Dialectics of Dependency.

Marini was a founder of the Brazilian Marxist organization Política Operária and later, during his Chilean exile, a member of the Movimiento de Izquierda Revolucionaria (MIR). Forced into exile again after the Pinochet coup, he taught at the UNAM in Mexico for many years,...

Nestlé

A,

Every day that passes, Nestlé takes almost 5 million litres of water from Ontario's aquifers, while politicians ignore this greedy water grab.

But no more. June 7th has just been announced as the date for the Ontario provincial election and parties are in the last phases of finalizing their platforms. With an election just months away, timing is critical to pressure Premier Wynne to commit to protecting Ontario's precious water from Nestlé's greed, once and for all.

Will you take a moment to sign the petition to tell Premier Wynne to stop letting Nestlé suck Ontario dry?

Every day, Nestlé is taking millions of litres of Ontario’s precious groundwater on expired permits.

We need to send a strong message now to Premier Wynne to say no to Nestlé sucking Ontario dry.

All Hands on Deck: The West Virginia Teachers' Strike

All Hands on Deck: The West Virginia Teachers’ Strike

Jane McAlevey

Dignity and respect are the root cause of every serious labor struggle. This was certainly the case in West Virginia’s unprecedented nine-day statewide education strike. When the workers won this past Tuesday, singing and dancing erupted among the thousands who packed the state capitol. Their final chant before leaving the building was, "Who made history? We made history!"

The strike produced a string of significant victories, not all of which are immediately tangible. Perhaps most significantly, it restored the dignity of 34,000 workers, rebuilding the pride of West Virginia’s working class and reinforcing one hell of a union that will carry the struggle forward.

This point seemed lost on much of the...

No Fare Is Fair: A Campaign for Free Public Transit in Toronto

No Fare Is Fair: A Campaign for Free Public Transit in Toronto

Free Transit Toronto

Why Do We Need Free Transit?

Public transit should be a right for everyone in Toronto. Using subways, buses, and streetcars shouldn’t require paying fares, or user fees, that penalize riders with lower incomes.

Like public education, libraries, clean water, and healthcare, public transit should be funded by government revenues. Regardless of income, which part of the city you live or work in, or if you have mobility challenges, transit should be easily accessible.

Imagine how empowering free transit would be: No more barriers between you and your destinations. No more fare gates. No more harassment from “fare police.”

Toronto transit fares have risen faster than...

How Young Parisians Expose Police Abuse

Earlier this year in Paris, a joint complaint filed by 18 young people finally had its day in court. The case’s defendants were four police officers from a “neighborhood support group.” According to many young Parisians, however, these officers tended to express their “support” for marginalized communities through ethnic profiling and abuse. Throughout the trial, depressingly familiar forms of this abuse were revealed: harrowing footage from an officer’s body camera, an alleged order to “oust the undesirables,” a pattern of those in authority looking the other way. How the case’s judges will rule is still unknown, but by pushing their cause into the spotlight, these young people have performed an invaluable service for tolerance, equality, and the rule of law.

They're afraid to air our ads

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

Radio stations are refusing to run our ads educating Canadians about Bell’s proposal for extrajudicial website blocking. Why? Because they’re afraid the ads would give the CRTC ammunition to remove their licence.

What a cold and hard reminder of why it’s so critical to keep the Internet free of censorship like this, which makes it easy for a small handful of powerful entities to police what we can and can’t say online.

This is exactly why we can’t back down.

Will...

Turkey's Privatization of Sugar Factories

Turkey’s Privatization of Sugar Factories

Kubilay Cenk

On February 21, a notice was released in Turkey’s Official Gazette (Resmi Gazete) stating that bids will be collected for Turkey’s state-owned fourteen sugar plants. According to Directorate of Privatization Administration’s (OIB) announcement, sugar plants in the provinces of Afyon, Alpullu, Bor, Burdur, Çorum, Elbistan, Erzincan, Erzurum, Ilgın, Kastamonu, Kırşehir, Muş, Turhal and Yozgat will be privatized. The Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP – Justice and Development Party) government, which has looted and made benefits of public-enterprises available to both national and international capital, seeks new privatization opportunities.

The introduction of neoliberal policies and privatization to Turkey began long before the AKP government.

Nobel Prize for Exxon

Why does the Nobel Foundation, which awarded the Peace Prize for climate leadership to Al Gore, still invest in planet-destroying fossil fuels?

Ask the Nobel Foundation to divest from all fossil fuels, putting its money where its mouth is on climate change.

A,

More than 837 institutions with total assets of more than $6 trillion, have committed to stop investing in fossil fuels companies, taking a clear stance against the main drivers of climate change. But the Nobel Foundation is not one of them -- yet.

Last year the foundation which awards the Nobel Prizes, was forced by campaigners to divest entirely from nuclear...
