Latest news from the fight for tribal peoples' survival.
Spanish supporters raise awareness among attendees of a travel fair in Madrid that tourism and evictions are harming tigers and tribes in India.
Last month we told you about our tiger boycott. We asked you to pledge not to visit any of India's tiger reserves until tribal peoples' rights are respected, and many of you responded! The truth is, tribal peoples and tigers have been living alongside each other in India's forests for generations. But now, tribal peoples are being forced off their land, while tourists are welcomed. It’s destroying communities, it’s illegal, and it’s also not good for tiger conservation.
The good news is that our boycott has been making waves around the world. A host of famous faces from India and the UK have come out in support of the global campaign, along with tribal peoples themselves. The Jenu Kuruba spoke out powerfully against the evictions, asking "Who has empowered the Forest Department to take our freedom?"

A win against Nestlé water in Oregon

A,
While we were fighting Nestlé in Michigan last year, we received some great news that we have yet to celebrate -- you helped secure a win against Nestlé in Oregon! This is an amazing step as we ramp up to kick Nestlé out of Ontario for good.
Nestlé had plans to pump fresh water out of Cascade Locks, Oregon to bottle and sell for massive profits -- but it fell through after a nine-year battle with local activists.

Bowing to the pressure of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, local residents, and thousands of SumOfUs members like you, Governor Kate Brown ordered state officials, in October, to stop the exchange of water rights that Nestlé needed to seal the deal.
It took major community power to stop Nestlé’s water grab, which would have drained some of Oregon’s cleanest water for...

Dear friends,
Today, my friend Daniel and I interrupted Prime Minister Trudeau during question period in the House of Commons by unfurling a banner calling on him to “show us the science” on the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline.
I called out to the PM saying “You say that the Kinder Morgan pipeline is safe for the climate and BC coast, and respects Indigenous Rights. Where’s the proof? Show us the science.” If you have the same question as me, sign our petition to make sure you’re heard as well.
Both of us were promptly escorted out and put under arrest. We might have caused a mild disruption today for our country’s top decision makers but that’s nothing compared to the kind of upheaval that...
Why isn't this a scandal?

There’s a dirty secret hiding in the shadows of yesterday’s federal budget.
Trudeau’s government chose to maintain loopholes that allow corporations to stash cash offshore and dodge $15 billion in taxes each year. That’s $15 billion that will be lining the pockets of billionaire CEOs, instead of funding the schools and hospitals your family relies on. [1-2]
This should be a scandal, PAOV, yet no one is talking about it. You can change that.
I just got off the phone with a team of independent researchers who are working on exposing how big business has lobbied behind the scenes to stop the government from closing tax loopholes. They need $10,000 to complete their research and release a bombshell story exposing the cozy relationship between politicians and the tax havens lobby.
This story could create the political pressure needed to force the Liberals to finally act on tax havens. But I have to let the research team know if we can cover the costs of this vital research by Monday.

Today, we’re holding a national Day of Action against website blocking in Canada. And we need you to join us.
Last month, a coalition of organizations, led by Bell, submitted a dangerous censorship plan to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC).1
The overreaching proposal calls for website blocking without court oversight;2 creating a blacklist for websites suspected of piracy.3 If we don’t act now, and this proposal gets through, it will erode the principles of freedom of expression...

What Could a Left Presidency Look Like in Mexico?
Ryan Mallett-Outtrim
Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) could become Mexico’s first progressive president in generations, but what would such a presidency actually look like? It is not an easy question to answer, though his time as leader of Mexico’s largest city could offer some insights. Between 2000 and 2005, Lopez Obrador headed the government of Mexico City. In a position akin to mayor, AMLO ran a city that today boasts a population of 8.9 million people in the city proper, and 20 million people if the surrounding greater urban area is included. In short, Mexico City is a country within a country.
When AMLO left office, he enjoyed an 84% approval rating. His welfare reforms...

© Karen Minasyan/AFP/Getty Free speech and the right to assemble are indispensable elements of open society. No government is perfect, and no lawmaker has all the answers. When citizens are denied their right to protest, assemble, and speak, it becomes impossible for them to truly communicate with their government and hold those elected to serve them to account. But like many other places in the world today, government leaders in Eastern Europe and the Western Balkans have been curtailing these fundamental human rights. This backsliding must be resisted, and legal reform, as well as greater dialogue between law enforcement and citizens, is a good place to start.

Bell’s finally put forward its plan to end net neutrality in Canada.
Tell the CRTC to reject this dangerous plan and protect free and open internet.
A,
It finally happened -- the coalition of Bell and other major Canadian telecommunications companies, called FairPlay Canada, just submitted its proposal to the CRTC to censor the internet and force the end of net neutrality in Canada.
This dangerous plan would create an internet “blacklist” that would have zero oversight in the courts. This would put unprecedented control of what websites Canadians can use in the hands of unaccountable corporations.
But we can stop this from...

Focus on China: The East is Green?
Martin Empson
China’s rapid economic expansion is based on massive state investment, low pay and manufacturing for export to the Western economies at the same time as the promotion of domestic consumerism. Global competition for resources and markets means China must continue this economic model. But this brings with it the risk of war, economic crisis and the threat of workers fighting for an increased share of the enormous wealth being generated. But it is also driving environmental disaster on a local and international scale.
Last October Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined a five-year economic strategy. He focused on putting China at the centre of the world economy, offering "a new option for other countries and nations...

2018 Socialist Register: Rethinking Democracy
The antagonism between liberalism and democratic processes is increasingly visible amidst the contradictions of capitalist globalization today. This is seen in authoritarian measures being adopted by so many states, as well as in concepts like post-democracy gaining currency in theoretical and political debate. The 2018 volume of the Socialist Register on Rethinking Democracy was conceived as a companion volume to the 2017 volume on Rethinking Revolution. No revival of socialist politics in the twenty-first century can occur apart from founding radical new democratic institutions and practices.
Introduction and moderated by Leo Panitch. Presentations by:
- Dennis Pilon – Associate Professor, Department of Politics, York University, Toronto.
- Ian McKay – L.R. Wilson Chair in Canadian History at McMaster University.
