McDonald’s gives out millions of ocean-polluting plastic straws everyday -- which end up killing sea life and as microplastics in our food chain.
Share this Olympics-themed video to put pressure on McDonald’s to ditch plastic straws, while it’s in the global spotlight as a sponsor of the Olympics.
A,
Our oceans are full of plastic, and unless we persuade global polluters like McDonald’s to stop, it’s only going to get worse.
Right now, McDonald’s is in the spotlight as a sponsor of the excitement of the Winter Olympics. That’s where SumOfUs members like you come in. Together, we can make this spoof video go viral,...

Ecological Sustainability, Inequality and Social Class
Raju Das
Karl Marx’s concept of sustainability is connected to his concepts of metabolism and reproduction. While the first connection is well recognized in recent literature (famously in the work of Paul Burkett, John Bellamy Foster and many others), the second connection is not. Moreover, sustainability is potentially connected to another crucial concept in Marx’s thinking – that is, value of labour power (which is expressed as the wage that workers receive), although Marx fails to explicitly make that connection.
In this short paper, I connect sustainability to metabolism, reproduction, and value of labour power. I argue that sustainability (or a healthy environment) can be seen as an "ecological social wage" under capitalism and has to be fought...

New Era in War on Workers: The Ramaphosa Presidency in South Africa
Irvin Jim
The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) views the appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa to the position of President of the Republic of South Africa, as a new era in the war against workers and the working class majority in the country.
It is also important for us to state that we welcome former president Jacob Zuma’s well deserved and humiliating removal from the highest office in the land. Zuma’s inglorious exit from power is fitting punishment for his treacherous betrayal of the African working class. As an affiliate of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), which is still a member of the ANC led alliance, NUMSA...

People powered wins for wild salmon

A,
Huge news! We have not one but THREE incredible wins for wild salmon to tell you about, A! And you helped make them all possible!

1. Victory! Changes to the Fisheries Act!
Last week, Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced a new and improved Fisheries Act. The amendments came in part in response to you, A. Here’s what we can expect: environmental protections gutted by Harper’s government in 2012 will be reinstated, and will include new commitments to involve Indigenous peoples and knowledge systems in decision making. These changes will go a long way in protecting our wild salmon populations.
2. Major progress on salmon blood!
BC’s Environment Minister, George Heyman, announced a full review of processing plants that are spewing untreated, farmed salmon blood into wild salmon migratory routes. This happened after...

Where’s The Funds? OCAP Confronts City Budget
Shelters in Toronto are packed full. Over 700 people are crammed in nightly into the sub-standard back-up respite facilities. OCAP took a hidden camera into three of these facilities. The resulting video documents conditions within them.
On February 12, Toronto City council met to finalize the budget for 2018, and OCAP was there. By 10pm that same night, we secured a significant victory in the fight for shelters. Council voted 34-8 in favour of a motion to make the necessary funds to build 1,000 shelter beds available this year.
Mobilizations of homeless people, and their allies, have forced the City and the Mayor to dramatically shift positions. In a span of a few months, they went from downplaying the seriousness of the crisis, to...

Amazon Is a 21st-Century Digital Chain Gang
Marshall Auerback
When Amazon announced plans to locate a $5-billion, 50,000-employee complex as its second headquarters somewhere in North America, state governments and municipalities fell over themselves offering billions of dollars in tax abatements and corporate subsidies to secure the prize. It might behoove the remaining 20 cities that have made the final cut to heed the warning from Virgil’s Aeneid: "I fear the Greeks, even when they are bearing gifts." Especially when the gifts come in the form of a modern-day digital chain gang.
Amazon likes to see itself as a cutting-edge, 21st-century growth company, always working to expedite delivery to its customers, whether by means of a drone, or eliminating queueing and bagging at its...

I want to see the science

Friends,
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently said “if I thought there was a danger to the beautiful British Columbia coast, I would not have approved the Kinder Morgan pipeline.”
The thing is, I live on this coast, and the community members, Indigenous leaders, and even politicians that surround me don’t share Trudeau’s level of certainty. In fact, we’ve seen many scientific reports indicating that Kinder Morgan would be devastating for the Pacific.
So I have a simple question for the Prime Minister: where’s the evidence that Kinder Morgan is 100% spill proof? I am calling on Trudeau to show me the science to back up his claims because I simply can’t understand how he can be so certain. Will you join me in bringing this important question to the Prime Minister?
This isn’t...

A,
Did you know that SumOfUs members around the world chipped in to defend the strongest ban to date on bee-killing pesticides?
And it worked!
When Dow Chemical tried to undermine France's historic ban on neonics -- the class of pesticides known to pose a deadly risk for bees and other pollinators -- our partner in France, Générations Futures, was ready to sue.
With the help of thousands of SumOfUs members chipping in to cover the legal costs, they stopped Dow Chemical in court.
Dow’s move: The chemical giant tried to get around the French ban by pushing for a new kind of neonicotinoid -- Sulfoxaflor -- not to be counted as a neonic so they can go on selling bee-killing pesticides.
But thanks to our partners and SumOfUs members like you, the authorization of Dow Chemical’s dangerous sulfoxaflor pesticides is now on ice.
We have proven yet again that together, we can...

The Geopolitics of the Kurds and the case of Rojava
Ercan Ayboga
Nowadays, with the defeat of the so called "Islamic State" (IS) on the ground in Syria, the geopolitics of the Syrian Kurds is discussed more than ever. To be precise, we should speak of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and of the political structure "Democratic Federation of Northern Syria" (DFNS) of which Rojava (West/Syrian Kurdistan) is a part. What is of interest for this article is the criticism by some (or many) leftists against the military cooperation with the USA. However, speaking only of the U.S. would be too limiting, since in this particular conflict Russia, Turkey and Iran are also closely involved.
The geopolitics of the Syrian Kurds can be understood...
