A,
Bulgari is point-blank refusing to stop sourcing genocide gems from Myanmar.
Last month, the luxury jeweller released a statement saying “The Bulgari Company has never purchased precious gemstones for fine jewellery directly in Myanmar”.
Unfortunately, we know that it doesn’t matter whether the Burmese rubies, sapphires and jade featured in Bulgari’s catalogue were bought directly in or outside of Myanmar.
If the gems were sourced from or cut in Myanmar, then we know they are helping to fund the ongoing genocide of Rohingya Muslims.
Already over 110,000 SumOfUs members have demanded Bulgari to do the right thing, but it won’t budge. Please can you sign the petition today and put pressure on Bulgari to stop buying genocide gems?
Yes, I'll tell Bulgari to stop buying genocide gems from Myanmar
Thank you,
Tricia, Hanna and the team at SumOfUs

The Time of Finance
Martijn Konings
The global financial crisis has done next to nothing to change the convictions of mainstream economists. But the widespread lament over their willful blindness seems misplaced: there was never a realistic possibility that the economics profession would voluntarily break with the methodological sophistication and statistical formalism at the heart of its identity. Far more frustrating than the resilience of orthodox economic thinking is the obsessive concern of more critical minds to prove mainstream economics "wrong," in the most literal way possible. Perhaps that shouldn’t be too surprising either. After all, it has been the preferred mode of engagement for decades. In a characteristic told-you-so tone, this work chides orthodox economists for their infantile belief in efficient markets and their...

A,
Great news: Cadbury, Ferrero and 20 other chocolate companies just committed to ending rainforest destruction in West Africa.
This is a huge step in our fight to save the rainforest.
But we can’t stop here. The current commitment only applies to West Africa. That means cocoa traders can simply move their illegal practices to other countries. We cannot let that happen.
This is why we need your help.
Please sign the petition to ask Ferrero and Cadbury to stop deforestation for cocoa globally.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, this is our chance to ramp up the pressure on Ferrero & Cadbury. Billions of Euros are spent on chocolate just for Valentine’s Day -- chocolate companies simply cannot afford to ignore the bad press that comes with destroying rainforests around the globe.
Chocolate companies have taken the first step. Let’s show them it’s time to end deforestation around...

A,
Pepsi’s bringing back that steamy Cindy Crawford ad for the Super Bowl next week. Old school soda machine, 90’s supermodel Cindy Crawford, retro music and drinks, this ad will show it all… well almost. One thing you won’t see in Pepsi’s Super Bowl ad is the company’s old school stance on palm oil and its ties to rainforest destruction and labor abuses. We have a solution for that -- our very own retro ad! To crash Pepsi’s Super Bowl party, we’re bringing back a spoof ad to get under Pepsi’s skin and force it to only use responsible palm oil. To pressure Pepsi, we need as many people as possible watching the video before Super Bowl Sunday February 4. That’s where you come in. We need you to help us...ACTIVlist Update - January 26, 2018

Crisis in the Canadian Labour Movement
A crisis has suddenly erupted within the Canadian labour movement, falling along old divisions of the movement’s archaic organizational structure, and assisted by the lack of any strategic focus or signs of even modest political ambitions beyond self-preservation in either the labour central or any of its affiliates. In the case at hand, the crisis is centred in Toronto and UNITEHERE Local 75, a large, diverse local with a militant history of organizing in the hotel and hospitality sectors in the Greater Toronto Area. Local 75 has been placed into trusteeship by the U.S.-headquartered International. Unifor, the largest Canadian (mostly) private sector union has organized a campaign to convince the membership of Local 75 to break with the International and...

Regulatory capture. Oil and gas industry influencing energy policy. Companies using unproven drilling techniques. These sound like things that only happen in places with corrupt governments and no corporate oversight, or maybe the latest Hollywood release, but they’re happening here in Nova Scotia.

After Carillion: The Struggle to Democratize Social Services
Colin Leys
Carillion’s failure has been compared to the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, but what the Lehman case shows is that you can engage in behaviour that puts millions out of work, and destroys the hopes of a generation, and not pay any price, or significantly change your behaviour. Lehman was emphatically not a ‘watershed’: no one has paid a significant price for the greed, irresponsibility and criminal behaviour that was exposed when Lehman went bust. The challenge is to ensure that the Carillion moment will be different: that the ideology that has led to companies like Carillion fleecing the public and jeopardizing livelihoods finally gives way to a new common sense about how Britain...
