Anti-Regime Protests in Iran

New Wave of Mass Protests in Iran

International Alliance in Support of Workers in Iran

Mass protests in over 50 cities across Iran have been taking place since December 28th amid heavy security to raise people’s voices against massive poverty, skyrocketing cost of living, vast corruption and embezzlement by officials on all levels as well as brutal political repression.

These protests are mostly unsystematically organized by the working and oppressed peoples in cities and towns all over Iran against the ever-increasing poverty, unemployment, cruelty and injustice imposed on the masses by the regime of the Islamic Republic and all its factions. At this time, the establishment seems to be in shock and unable to suppress and overcome mass protests...

COP23: From the Gap to the Precipice

Daniel Tanuro

The Twenty-Third Conference of the Parties Signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate has just concluded in Bonn, Germany. It was an intermediate meeting between COP21 in Paris in 2015 and COP24 in Katowice (Poland) in 2018.

As we know, Paris resulted in a so-called ‘historic’ agreement concerning the level of global warming not to be exceeded at the end of the century (compared to the pre-industrial era): "stay well below 2°C and continue efforts not to exceed 1.5°C."

Katowice (COP24) will be a more important step than Bonn: the signatory countries will have to say how and to what extent they will raise the level of their ambitions in order to...

Dear Paov,

2017 was a deeply painful year for those of us impacted by climate disasters, as well as for the climate movement and other progressive movements fighting for justice around the world. Despite the many assaults on our values, our communities, and the climate, there’s so much that we can be proud of.

Please watch this short video to see my 2017 highlights:

In 2018, we’re looking forward to pushing for extraordinary climate action around the world. But we need your help to fight for the lasting change we need. Please join me in donating to 350.org today.

Thank you, and all the best in 2018,

May

Paov, the Internet is set for enormous change in 2018.

Our team is working diligently to have dragnet spy powers eliminated from the government’s new National Security bill, and we’ve just kicked off a new campaign that could significantly lower our cellphone bills. Meanwhile, online freedom of expression is in Bell’s sights, and we're getting ready to fight back.

With you by our side, Paov, we will prevail.

Catalonia: The Independence Movement Resists, But Without Clarifying Its Strategy

Marti Caussa

The December 21 election (21-D) reconfirmed the absolute majority of pro-independence members in the Catalan Parlement. It marked the political defeat of article 155, although that article and its consequences are still in force. On the other hand, the "unionist" bloc, favouring the "union" under the Spanish state and defending the latter’s implementation of article 155, emerged stronger and more aggressive. Ciudadanos (C’s) obtained the largest number of votes and deputies, and furthered its hegemony within this bloc.

The pro-independence majority bloc, winning the most votes and seats, legitimates the struggle for the Catalan Republic and the result of the October 1 referendum. However, the lack of strategic clarity continues. The October...

Workers are the Heart of the Algorithm

Workers are the Heart of the Algorithm

Antonio Casilli, a professor at Télécom ParisTech, is considered one of the leading experts in the capitalism of digital platforms. He is known for his pioneering research on "digital labour," refuting the apocalyptic common-sense notion that is proclaiming the end of work as such because of automation.

"We are the ones who make the robots, with our own labour," he says. "We make the criteria according to which they operate. And then we teach them to learn how to improve. The problem is not that robots are stealing our work, but that we continue to work more and more, and that the platforms are fragmenting and rendering invisible the labour that is necessary to make the algorithms work."
