$60/10GB is still too much

Stop paying so much for your cell phone bill, Paov.
The Big Three — Bell, Rogers, and Telus — have gotten away with charging some of the highest bills in the world all while pulling in the highest profits.1
But that ends now. They’ve shown us they can afford to offer data for at least as low as $6 a gigabyte with the recent, though short-lived, $60/10GB plans. Now show...

John Kannankulan and Stefan Kipfer – Cracks and Fissures in Europe:
Authoritarian Statism, the Hard Right and Challenges for the Left
Moderated by Greg Albo. Presentations by John Kannankulam and Stefan Kipfer
What is distinctive about the new conjuncture is the growing delegitimation of the key institutional supports of neoliberal hegemony, which have sponsored the making of global capitalism under its ideological auspices. This stretches from the bureaucracies of the European Union, the IMF, and the WTO and, in the context of the Trump presidency, to possibly even the U.S. Treasury and Federal Reserve, whose capacity to manage the economic contradictions of capitalist globalization will be severely challenged. The most visible expression of this institutional crisis is the delegitimation of all the political parties of...

Dear A,
As the year is drawing to a close, I wanted to send you a special message to say thank you for everything you have done in 2017.
You have accomplished so much this year: you fought against Trump’s hate; you put a hold on the Bayer-Monsanto merger; you made big players like Nestlé and Uber shake in their boots; and you made great strides to save our bees.
You and the millions of other SumOfUs members around the world are truly the backbone of this organisation. It is you who made it all happen.
From all of us at SumOfUs, this is for you:

Paov,
The Internet is at a turning point. Our government is pushing new invasive spying powers, while it seems Bell will stop at nothing to chip away at Canadian Net Neutrality and gain unprecedented powers for Canada-wide website blocking.1 2 As Net Neutrality has been dismantled in the U.S., Canada’s open Internet is more vulnerable than ever.3
Our nimble team is ready for these fights -- and we’ve received some seriously good news: a generous donor has just offered...

A -- I need to make this quick. Bell was expected to present its proposal to the CRTC yesterday -- but it still hasn’t. This might mean your pressure is scaring Bell off. Over 50,000 Canadians have already signed the petition in the last few days -- will you add your name now?
Tell Bell, Rogers, Shaw, and Cineplex: drop your dangerous "blacklist" proposal now.
Thanks,
Emma
Canada’s internet is free and open now -- but Bell, Rogers, Shaw, and Cineplex want to change that.
Will you help preserve net neutrality in Canada?

Zelaya: Open Letter to the American People
José Manuel Zelaya Rosales
People of the United States:
For the past century, the owners of the fruit companies called our country "Banana Republic" and characterized our politicians as "cheaper than a mule" (as in the infamous Rolston letter).
Honduras, a dignified nation, has had the misfortune of having a ruling class lacking in ethical principles that kowtows to U.S. transnational corporations, condemning our country to backwardness and extreme poverty.
We have been subject to horrible dictatorships that have enjoyed U.S. support, under the premise that an outlaw is good for us if he serves transnational interests well. We have reached the point that today we are treated as less than a colony to which...

In South Africa, Ramaphosa Rises as Lonmin Expires:
Workers, Women and Communities Prepare to Fight, Not Mourn
Patrick Bond
Monday night’s internal African National Congress (ANC) presidential election of Cyril Ramaphosa -- with a razor-thin 51 per cent majority of nearly 4800 delegates -- displaced but did not resolve a fight between two bitterly-opposed factions. On the one hand are powerful elements friendly to so-called "White Monopoly Capital," and on the other are outgoing ANC president Jacob Zuma’s allies led by Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, his ex-wife and former African Union chairperson. The latter faction includes corrupt state "tenderpreneur" syndicates, especially the notorious Gupta brothers, and is hence typically nicknamed "Zupta." (Zuma is still scheduled to serve as national president until mid-2019.)
South Africa’s currency...

Luxury jewellery retailer Bulgari is propping up the genocide of the Rohingya people.
Can you share this video calling on Bulgari brand ambassador Bella Hadid to cut ties until the company stops buying gems from Myanmar?
A,
Italian luxury brand Bulgari is still buying gems from Myanmar.
With Cartier now joining other major brands in boycotting these conflict gems (thanks to you!), the tide is shifting and Bulgari is now an outlier. The time to act is now: we can use the momentum from your win with Cartier to step up pressure on Bulgari.

Jeremy Corbyn’s Geneva Speech
British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn speaking in Geneva in honor of International Human Rights Day cited the need to: "Build a new social and economic system with human rights and justice at its core. Deliver climate justice and a better way to live together on this planet. Recognise the humanity of refugees and offer them a place of safety. Work for peace, security and understanding. The survival of our common humanity requires nothing less."
Thank you Paul for that introduction. And let me give a special thanks to the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development. Your work gives an important platform to marginalised voices for social justice to challenge policy makers and campaign for change.
I welcome pressure...

We're making headlines

Holy crap. Last week, 219 Leadnow members chipped in for a national opinion poll on corporate tax havens. We just got the results and they’re incredible.
90% of Canadians think that it’s morally wrong for Canadian corporations to use tax havens to dodge paying their fair share in tax (even if it’s legal) — and 87% want the Trudeau Liberals to make tax havens illegal.[1] The poll's making headlines, and politicians are talking about it.
I don't think I've ever seen a poll with such broad public agreement. But is it really any wonder? Billionaire corporations dodge $15 billion in taxes every year by stuffing them into offshore tax havens.[2] And when corporations dodge their taxes, you pay more.
Now that we know there’s mass opposition to corporate tax havens, we have a real shot at winning this campaign against cashed-up corporations who are going to fight tooth and nail to protect their dodgy tax avoidance schemes — but we have to build the campaign now.
Together our powerful people-powered campaign can convince Trudeau to crackdown on corporate tax havens, but you’re missing out. Will you join the movement that's taking on the billion-dollar tax dodgers? The first step is signing the petition.

Paov, the Trump administration is still trying to force U.S. visa seekers to provide five years of social media history before they’ll even be considered for a visa.1
It’s a chilling attack on global free speech: anyone, anywhere who is about to post something controversial or critical of governments may now be concerned that such rules could — now or someday — be made to apply to them.
But the reason I’m writing to you today is because we...
I have a message (and a request) for you, Paov

Dear Paov,
So, I'm usually fairly eloquent, but less so when it comes to asking for money to fund 350.org. That's because I'm always of two minds about it: above all we need you volunteering yourself, and because we operate around the world and across many traditional lines, there's plenty of you who have no money to spare.
But if you have more than you need -- well, 350.org strikes me as a good investment. Our big campaigns to keep fossil fuels in the ground are working and paying off in large ways. In Canada, this year, we saw people power come out victorious against the largest tar sands pipeline ever proposed -- Energy East. And just this week, new academic research emerged proving that our movement is taking a significant financial toll on the fossil fuel industry.1
It works because we all work together. So watch this short message...
