Carillion and the Latest Privatisation Scandal
John McDonnell
This week 20,000 Carillion workers and many more in the supply chain have had their livelihoods put at risk. The responsibility lies with this shambolic Tory government and mismanagement by Carillion’s fat-cat bosses.
The collapse of Carillion, embarrassing for a government that had championed the company and awarded it contract after contract, represents another significant blow to the "private knows best" economic dogma.
Nothing has come to symbolise the worship of free-market solutions -- often against all the evidence -- more than the persistent belief that key public services would be better provided by profit-seeking companies. As the journalist Robert Peston put it, the collapse of Carillion represents the definitive end of a 25-year love...

Seriously, Tim Hortons?

Tim Hortons franchises just started cutting paid breaks and benefits to its employees after a minimum wage increase in Ontario.
It’s time to tell Tim Hortons' parent company to protect its workers from these bullying tactics.
A,
It’s disgusting: more than a dozen Tim Hortons franchises all over Ontario are cutting workers’ paid breaks and benefits because of the recent minimum wage increase. This gross display of corporate greed has been condemned verbally by Restaurant Brands International, the parent company that owns Tim Hortons -- and yet nothing has actually changed for workers.
Tim Hortons workers, just like all minimum wage workers, deserved this wage increase...

Justice for Hassan Diab and the Unbearable Banality of Evil
Judith Deutsch
Great joy and relief came with the news this January 12th that French investigative judges issued an "order of final release" for Dr. Hassan Diab from a French maximum security prison. Dr. Diab, a sociology professor and Canadian citizen, was charged with bombing the Rue Copernic Synagogue in 1980. His release follows eight previous orders for his conditional release by four French judges which were all reversed on appeal. But so far this ruling appears to be final and is hopefully a very belated vindication of Dr. Diab and for truth and justice. Since 2007 when France sought his extradition from Canada, credible and verifiable evidence testifying to his innocence was concealed or...

Homelessness Doesn’t End in April:
Toronto City Council Must Start Building Shelters Now
Ontario Coalition Against Poverty
Homeless people in Toronto are in crisis. In the first nine months of 2017, the city has recorded an average of 8 homeless deaths every month. Most of those who died were under the age of 50. Emergency shelters, whether they serve women, men, youth, refugees, or families, are packed full every single night, winter and summer. Even the sub-standard backup winter warming centres, 24 hour drop-ins, and volunteer-run overnight programs are full, despite conditions within most of them being appalling.
City Council can’t claim ignorance. For years, homeless people, front-line workers and advocates have raised an alarm about the worsening situation. Beyond the innumerable deputations and...

Socialist Interventions Pamphlet No. 16:
Basic Income In The Neoliberal Age
Ontario Coalition Against Poverty
From the very first days of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP), at the beginning of the 1990s, we have found ourselves on the front lines of a war on the poor that has been of central importance to the implementation of broader neoliberal austerity. In Canada, the undermining of these income support systems, both at the federal and provincial level, has continued to be vigorously pursued and the poverty and insecurity that this has generated has created the vulnerability and desperation needed in order to weaken workers’ bargaining power, reduce the capacity of unions to resist and to facilitate a veritable explosion of low wage precarious work. In light of this dogged pursuit of austerity based agenda over so many years, news that the Ontario government was likely to set up a...

Another Europe is Needed
Ernesto Screpanti
Since the end of World War II, tribal rivalries and xenophobic sentiment in Europe have never been as strong as they are today. And this is but one of the European Union’s ‘successes’. Not to mention the resurrected warmongering vocation that led the Union to feed conflicts in Libya, Syria, Ukraine and, when the Union was still in the preparatory phase, to favor the explosion of devastating civil wars in Yugoslavia.
Another series of ‘successes’ has involved the social and economic sphere, with increases in unemployment, poverty, and inequality; the deterioration of labour conditions; reductions in workers’ rights; greater labour insecurity and precariousness; worsening welfare in the areas of education, health services, public utilities and social security; the...
