Thanks to new legislation passed today, the broken review processes for tar sands and pipeline projects will be reformed. But there’s one big project still being reviewed under the old rules -- the largest tar sands mine ever proposed.
Tell Ottawa to review Teck’s Frontier Mine under its new climate and Indigenous rights regulations.
A,
Breaking news: Ottawa just announced major changes to how pipelines and tar sands projects are approved! Now, new projects will have to pass new rules. This is great news.
But here’s the problem: the largest open-pit tar sands mine ever proposed in the history of Canada is still slated to...

Friends,
This has been one interesting week. In the past few days we’ve seen Indigenous peoples in BC launch a call for bold action to stop Kinder Morgan, the Alberta government attack small BC businesses on behalf of a massive Texan oil company, and the Trudeau government’s rollout of new environmental legislation. © Alexander Joe/AFP/Getty One of poverty’s many harms is the way it restricts its victims’ access to justice. Unfortunately, most of the world’s governments still treat poverty and the law as separate issues. Shielding judges and attorneys from political meddling is obviously crucial, but enforcing this barrier too rigidly makes it harder for policymakers to see how poverty and legal needs interact. There’s a long way to go, but the grassroots work being done in the United States and Colombia is deeply encouraging.

Red and Green: The Ecosocialist Perspective
Michael Löwy
The contemporary international political economy is marked by a great contradiction. On a planet characterized by finite resources, the economy is predicated upon an absurd and irrational logic of infinite expansion and accumulation. With its fossil fuel based operations continually spewing carbon into the earth’s atmosphere, the capitalist system’s productivist obsession with profit has brought humanity to the brink of an abyss. Climate change is accelerating much faster than predicted – the accumulation of CO2, the rise in temperature, the melting of the polar ice, the drought, and the floods: everything is happening too quickly. In fact, the scientific assessments are now perceived as being too optimistic. The question is: after a certain level of increase in...
