Lula’s Witch Trial: Who Are The TRF4?
Brasil Wire
Some are calling it the Coup’s endgame, others the "final battle" for Brazil’s next decade.
Former President Lula, who held office from 2003-2011 has twice the support of his nearest rival to succeed Putschist Michel Temer in the October 2018 elections.

If his conviction is upheld he would not only be barred from the Presidency but face arrest and up to a decade in prison.
It is...

Locked-Up for Reading: Young Leftists in China Speak Out
Voices from the November 15th Incident
On November 15, 2017, police stormed into a student reading group at the Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) and seized six participants, including four current students at the university and two recent graduates from other schools. The former were released the next day, but the latter two were placed under detention as suspects for the crime of "gathering crowds to disrupt social order" -- a charge we have seen increasingly leveled against multiple feminists, labour activists, striking workers and bloggers over the past five years. Authorities alleged that the reading group was an "anti-party, anti-society organization" that was discussing "sensitive topics."
Despite Beijing’s massively staffed policing of the internet...

Dear Friend,
We hope all is well and thank you for your ongoing support of Democracy Watch’s campaigns to make Canada the world’s leading democracy!
Unfortunately, despite the support of people like you sending more than 170,000 messages to federal party leaders and MPs here, the federal government continues to use secretive, partisan processes to choose Canada’s key democracy watchdogs.
Not surprisingly, the government keeps appointing people with weak enforcement records – they just appointed two new lapdogs --...

P3 Corporate Collapse Highlights Risks of Privatization
Canadian Union of Public Employees
The collapse of Carillion, a global privatization corporation, illustrates the risky nature of public-private partnerships (P3s) and contracting out. Carillion is involved in 10 P3s across Canada, primarily in hospitals in Ontario, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. Two hospitals are still in development.
It is unclear how Carillion’s equity stakes and facilities management contracts in many Canadian P3s, as well as the contracted-out services they provide, will be dealt with as part of the company’s asset liquidation. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) believes the infrastructure and services in which Carillion plays a role should be brought back under public control -- all public infrastructure should be publicly financed, owned, maintained...

The Iran Protests: A Third Path to Political Change?
Fouad Oveisy and Behnam Amini
An Alternative to the Politics of "National Security" Emerges
Days of protests in Iran have caught statesmen, analysts and observers by surprise, even though the anti-austerity and anti-establishment sentiments behind this primarily working-class revolt have been brewing for years. All the same, surprise is not a common reaction across the media. An early analysis offered in a tweet by the popular and self-styled Marxist pundit, Ali Alizadeh, captures a sentiment which is common across an array of responses to these events from individuals and groups as disparate, in both aim and ideas, as the Iranian reformists, the Iranian postcolonial left, and middle class Iranians both inside and outside Iran. Alizadeh...
