Big 6 Banks gouge out $42 billion in profit in 2017
Help stop the gouging now!

Dear Friend,

Feeling gouged by your bank right now? You have a right to – while businesses in many sectors across Canada were suffering, Canada’s Big 6 Banks gouged out record annual profits for the 7th year in a row of more than $42 billion in 2017!

That works out to almost $20 million in profit every hour banks are open – 13% higher than in 2016, and more than double...

Communists Sweep the Nepali Elections

Vijay Prashad

You might as well imagine a large red flag fluttering from the summit of Mount Everest. That’s what the outcome of the parliamentary and provincial elections in Nepal suggests. The Communists have won both decisively. In the parliament, the Communist alliance will hold close to a two-thirds majority. The government that this majority forms will not only be able to last the full five year term -- the first time this would have happened since Nepal adopted parliamentary democracy in 1990 -- but it will be able to revise the 2015 Constitution.

Both the parliamentary and provincial results show that the Communists won across the country from the countryside to the cities. Even though they have a...

Bells grab for internet control

Canada’s internet is free and open now -- but Bell, Rogers, Shaw, and Cineplex want to change that.

Will you help preserve net neutrality in Canada?

Sign the Petition

A,

It’s scary -- Bell, Cineplex, Rogers, and Shaw are trying to censor the internet and force the end of net neutrality in Canada. And worse, they're trying to do it behind closed doors.

These 4 companies, led by Bell, are pushing to create an internet "blacklist" of certain websites that all internet service providers in Canada would legally have to block. They know this outrageous proposal would never pass, so first, they tried to sneak it into NAFTA negotiations -- and...

Bell's bid to block the Internet

OpenMedia r1

Bell is trying to censor Canada’s Internet.

Tomorrow, they could put forward a proposal to have Canada’s telecom regulator, the CRTC, set up a body that would block websites that they deem to have pirated content on them. It’s a slippery slope — with no court oversight.

Bell has some support from Shaw, but Telus and Rogers haven’t made their stance clear — help us push them over the edge in support of an open Internet and Net Neutrality,...

Were going to cut the money off

Incredible news! Thanks to you, Cartier has agreed to stop purchasing gems from Myanmar.

But we’re not stopping there. Can you tell Bulgari to adopt a policy of selling no genocide gems?

Sign the Petition

A,

We did it. Cartier has agreed to stop purchasing gemstones from Myanmar, with immediate effect.

This is all because of you. Over 75,000 members of the SumOfUs community stepped up to demand Cartier take an ethical stand, and refuse to buy gems from Myanmar.

Gems that, through incredibly strong industry ties to the state military, are helping to fund the ongoing genocide of the Rohingya Muslims.

We cannot thank you enough for speaking up.

But...

Copping Out at COP23, Avoidance and Possibility in a Burning World

Copping Out at COP23, Avoidance and Possibility in a Burning World

Dave Bleakney

During the recent COP23 summit in Bonn, a taxi driver provided a clear summary. Asked what he thought of COP 23, he replied "the climate is in crisis, but here, this is about money." He had provided what had been missing inside. As we race toward certain and expanding catastrophe, he underscored that profiteering off a destructive cycle production, consumption, shipping, the unnecessary transport of products over vast distances and continuous growth models form the basis from which these discussions are framed. It is as though the elephant in the room is never acknowledged, with few exceptions.

How does this appear? In North America you can try this experiment. Turn down...

Save the Bees

A,

The SumOfUs community was a powerful defender for the bees this week. Ahead of a crucial EU meeting on the future of bee-killing pesticides, we got ads plastered across Brussels Airport, making sure that leaders didn’t miss our important message.

Check them out!

Brussels Airport covered in Save the Bees ads.

Representatives from EU governments met to decide on a game-changing proposal to widen the ban on three infamous bee-killing pesticides this week.

Disappointingly, the vote was postponed.

As upset as we are about these news here at SumOfUs, we are equally proud and grateful for the support of the SumOfUs community. Thanks to you, we got these critical ads up quickly -- and they will be seen by thousands of people, and will have a lasting effect on EU politicians that saw them.

And now, we will build on our momentum....

Canada Must Stop Support to Honduras Regime following Botched Election

Jen Moore

In the chaos following national elections in Honduras on November 26, Canadian authorities must take a strong public stand and forcibly denounce evidence of electoral fraud and violent repression of public protests. Across Honduras, tens of thousands of people have been demonstrating their discontent over evidence of electoral fraud by the government-controlled electoral tribunal. As widely reported, while early trends in the vote count indicated that opposition presidential candidate Salvador Nasralla was on track to win, delays, irregularities and evidence of vote-rigging since then favour the incumbent National Party candidate, Juan Orlando Hernández (JOH).

Even prior to the November 26 vote, Hernández’ attempt at reelection in the face of Honduras’ single-term limit...
