State and Labour During the AKP Rule in Turkey:

A Balance Sheet of 15 Years

Dr. Mehmet Erman Erol

The AKP (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi-Justice and Development Party) is celebrating 15 years in power in Turkey. The party came to power in November 2002, against the backdrop of the major 2001 crisis and amidst a legitimacy crisis of the then mainstream political parties stemming from the crisis-ridden 1990s. The AKP’s policies brought about significant transformations in the state, economy and the society. Conventionally, the first two terms of the AKP government (2002-2011) were identified with democratization, reformism and progressive economic policies. The fact that the government’s authoritarianism reached inconceivable levels post-2011 (especially during and after the Gezi protests of 2013), and the fact that...

Palestine 101: Not That Complicated

LeftStreamed:

Palestine 101: Not That Complicated

"Palestine 101: Not That Complicated" is part of Together We Rise: Palestine as a Model of Resistance, our political education curriculum designed to provide critical voices, context, and resources to strengthen liberation struggles from the U.S. to Palestine. Together We Rise includes 101 resources on Palestine, skill-building tools, outlines how U.S. and Israeli colonialism and racism are connected, and what we can learn from Palestinian, Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other freedom struggles.

Many people are held back from taking a stand on the issue of Palestine/Israel by the common misconception that it is "complicated." Here, we explain the steady continuation of the more than 100 year old settler colonial project that is Zionism. Palestine 101: Not That Complicated can help folks both familiar and unfamiliar with the...

Bell's censorship scheme

OpenMedia r1

Paov, we’ve just learned Bell Canada has made another radical attempt to censor your Internet, and begin the attack on Net Neutrality here in Canada.1

Bell’s latest scheme is to pressure the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) into creating a new agency to lead the charge on website blocking and censorship. This is an attack on our freedom, and will trample on the rights of Canadian Internet users.2

This isn’t Bell’s first pitch for censorship powers. They already tried...

Election 2018: a Battle Over #Fightfor15

Quinton Ascah

The 2018 Ontario provincial election will be fought over many issues. Liberal Kathleen Wynne’s unpopularity as Premier, Progressive Conservative Party Leader Patrick Brown’s flip-flopping on major issues, the election of Donald Trump in the United States and subsequent re-evaluation of NAFTA are all certainly to come up in coverage and debates. However, one of the biggest issues that will be fought next year is a struggle that activists have been working on for years, and one which opponents believe could derail Ontario’s entire economy: Bill 148. The minimum wage hike, and other labour reforms in the Bill, may be the most controversial public policy issue in Ontario right now. The effects of it will impact students, young...

Urgent: BC Minimum wage

Right now, an independent Fair Wages Commission is studying how to implement a $15 minimum wage in BC - but the deadline for input is 4pm tomorrow.

If we act fast, we can flood the commission with requests to implement the minimum wage hike quickly and for all workers. Can you send an email now?

Tens of thousands of British Columbians who earn minimum wage are living below the poverty line, even if they work full time. [1]

The new BC NDP government has promised to raise the minimum wage to $15. It’s a long overdue change that is desperately needed to ensure all workers can make ends meet, but there are some important details left to figure out.

An independent Fair Wages Commission is studying how to implement the wage hike, and if we don’t pipe up they could slow down the timeline for implementation and even exclude some types of workers.

On the 20th anniversary of the peace accord between the Jumma tribal peoples and the Bangladesh government, campaigners have raised concerns that successive Bangladeshi administrations have failed to implement this vital agreement, or protect the Jumma.

The tribe continue to face endemic violence, land-grabbing and intimidation on their ancestral land in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). Jumma women and girls are frequently subjected to rape and sexual assault.
