Bell, censorship, and Net Neutrality

OpenMedia r1

Paov, Bell is at it again.

This month, Bell put forward a radical proposal to block the websites you visit. It would result in sweeping Internet censorship and put Canada’s robust Net Neutrality rules at risk.1

The news comes as Net Neutrality protections were abolished today in the United States.2 This latest assault by Bell shows that Canadians — despite having robust Net Neutrality laws — must stay vigilant when it comes to protecting our free and open Internet.3

Bell first...

Doubling down.

In 2018, we will need your support to keep tar sands in the ground. r1

Dear PAOV,

What a year it’s been. In 2017, the movement for climate justice and Indigenous rights stopped the largest tar sands pipeline ever proposed -- Energy East. This was beautiful news to receive in the middle of a rough year. And while my team joined our friends across the country in taking a moment to celebrate, the victory against Energy East was also a reminder that we need to double down against tar sands expansion in all its unjust forms.

To do that, we’re counting on support from people like you, PAOV. Please consider donating to 350.org so we can continue fighting dirty tar sands expansion in 2018.

To say the least, this was a tough year. The climate crisis has put our world on the...

Levis has a secret

Levi’s leadership and innovation in protecting the global climate is more urgent than ever.

Demand the apparel company step up and be an industry leader by reducing its climate pollution.

Sign the Petiton

A,

1.1 million cars. That's how much Levi’s climate pollution amounts to in a single year. Much of this pollution comes from coal and other dirty fossil fuels burned to power its clothing factories in China and India.

But Levi’s hasn’t made any firm commitments to clean up its supply chain and take a leadership role in transitioning the apparel industry to renewable industry. the apparel industry to renewable industry.

US vote, Canadian impact

OpenMedia r1

Tomorrow the FCC votes to repeal Net Neutrality in the States. Make no mistake, this will have an impact in Canada.1

The Internet doesn’t have borders — this vote in the U.S. could mean the end of the open, innovative Internet as we know it here, too.2 But Congress has the power to overturn the FCC’s vote.

Show the U.S. Congress the world is watching:
Say no to Cable 2.0

If the FCC has its way it will...

Québec Solidaire Clarifies Its Support for Independence

Richard Fidler

There were two main tasks on the agenda at the congress of the left party Québec solidaire (QS), meeting in Longueuil December 1-3. One was the adoption of the party's platform for the next Quebec general election, to be held in October 2018. The other was ratification of a proposed fusion with Option nationale (ON), a small party originating in a split from the Parti québécois in 2011 after the PQ had put its goal of Quebec independence on the back burner for the foreseeable future. The fusion may add several hundred ON militants to QS's membership of 18,000.

Following extensive debate, the fusion proposal was adopted by a vote of more than 80% of...

Bell's censorship scheme

OpenMedia r1

Hey Paov, I just wanted to make sure you saw my email from last week.

Bell announced a proposal to create a mandatory blocking system for websites that they, along with a handful of other giant corporations, determine are inappropriate. The blocking would take place with little or no oversight from our courts.

We can’t let multi-billion dollar companies control our Internet access.

Will you become a Monthly Ally so that we can continue to fight back against Bell’s plan...

Canada and Honduras: Election Fraud is Only the Latest Outrage in Eight Year Nightmare

Tyler Shipley

The dictatorship that rules Honduras is in the process of stealing another election, and the Canadian government is doing precisely what it has done the last two times the Honduran dictatorship stole an election: nothing.

Actually, to say Canada is doing nothing is far too generous. In fact, Canada has been arguably the biggest supporter of the de facto government of Honduras, which took over the country in a coup d’etat in 2009, and which has plunged the country into a political, economic, and humanitarian crisis in the eight years since.

As I documented in detail in my recent book, Ottawa and Empire, Canada was instrumental in...

We Cant Ignore Women Who Use Drugs

Open Society Foundations A group of women holding babies © Yuri Kozyrev/NOOR/Redux
According to the World Health Organization, one in three women will experience violence in her life, most commonly at the hand of an intimate partner. For women who use drugs, though, the number is almost certainly higher. While their plight is often forgotten, the fact is that violence against women who use drugs is a major public health problem. But without access to safety and treatment, women often remain locked in the cycle of gender-based violence. The consequences, not only for them but also for their children, can be devastating. If the movement against gender-based violence is going to reach its full potential, then these women’s voices must be heard.
