2018 Phyllis Clarke Memorial Lecture presented by Jodi Dean:
Four Theses on the Comrade
Crucial to the global excitement generated by the October Revolution was the promise and possibility of new forms of relationship, new ways of being human. The Revolution heralded an end to relations of hierarchy and domination and the beginning of new relations of comradeship and solidarity. This paper focuses on the comrade as a term of address, figure of political relation, and carrier of expectations for action. It presents four theses on the comrade, emphasizing the genericity and interchangeability of the comrade. It argues that this genericity, the sameness of those on the same side, provides a way through the impasse of systems and survivors prominent on the contemporary left.

The Council of Canadians has numerous concerns about the so-called 'comprehensive and progressive' Trans-Pacific Partnership that the Trudeau government signed yesterday and will try to ratify in the House of Commons before the end of this year.

Paov,
Yesterday, despite mass worldwide public opposition, 11 countries just signed a modified version of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in Chile.1
In Canada, there’s been a massive outcry for transparency since the early TPP days. But the government continues to negotiate the deal in secret, ignoring citizens’ voices and best interests.
As revealed in our crowdsourced Let’s Talk TPP Citizens’ Report, an overwhelming majority of Canadians who partook in the...

Crisis of the State, Crisis of the Left:
Articulating Socialism After the Anarchist Moment
Stephen Maher
The current period in the U.S. remains defined by the 2008 crisis and the economic policies and political forces it set in motion. This has now evolved into a growing crisis between the forms of governance, strategy, and administration that have defined the U.S.-led period of globalization and the state mechanisms of representation, particularly the two dominant parties. Conflicts within the state normally hidden behind the humdrum performance of statecraft have increasingly burst from behind this curtain. Tensions between the military establishment and the intelligence apparatus have been particularly apparent, though these schisms find their origins in the post 9/11 years, if not before. Portions of the intelligence apparatus...

The fatal flaw of Alberta's oil export expansion, attached article

Just in case you need more justification why we should stop the Trans Mountain-Kinder Morgan Pipeline, here is an excellent article in Energy Mix by Paul McKay telling why the Trudeau/Notley tag team is perpetuating a big snow job: Two weeks ago, the first supertanker capable of holding two million barrels of oil departed for the first time from America’s newly upgraded—and only—terminal able to dock and load crude carrying behemoths of this size. That will likely prove fatal to Alberta’s plans to expand unrefined bitumen exports either by the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline to the British Columbia coast, or the proposed Keystone XL pipeline. BC should hold the line, this pipeline will only cause more damage to our land, water and air, and it will only benefit Kinder Morgan, and not that much. The PM should do his lessons before making deals such as the Notley/Kinder Morgan fiasco. The Energy Mix is a worthwhile news outlet which is well worthwhile to subscribe to; some of the latest articles are: 1) Fossil fuel subsidies 373 bn in 2015: OECD reports; 2) BC First Nations declare against “Hyper-masculine” pipeline man camps; 3) U.S. renewables boomed in 2017 despite federal, state-level uncertainty; and 4) Dollars drive Husky’s ‘reckless decision’ to risk dangerous offshore iceberg hit.

Each minute the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic ends up in the ocean -- where it's then eaten by fish, birds, and other animals looking for a meal, not a belly full of toxic trash.
Starbucks coffee cups, straws, and plastic cutlery are a huge part of the problem. And in just two weeks we’ll be delivering our petition at Starbucks’ AGM -- calling on Starbucks to cut down on the the sheer amount of plastic trash it creates.
Thousands of SumOfUs members across the world have already signed - please will you join them?
Sign the petition: Starbucks make the switch to 100% recyclable cups!
The world's oceans are full of plastic and 4 billion plastic-lined Starbucks cups end up in the garbage every year.
Starbucks is part of the problem: tell the coffee giant to switch...

A,
WOW -- because of the overwhelming public response, the CRTC has extended the comment period for Bell's dangerous censorship plan! We now have until April 1st to let the CRTC know that we don't want a handful of corporations controlling what websites Canadians can visit.
Bell’s finally put forward its plan to end net neutrality in Canada.
Tell the CRTC to reject this dangerous plan and protect free and open internet.

The Case for Free Public Transport
Connor Beaton
The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) is a proud advocate of a world-class, fare-free public transport system for Scotland.
Transport has undergone enormous changes in recent decades, both in Scotland and across the world. Some have been cyclical: in Scotland’s capital, trams were built, dismantled, and then reintroduced. In other areas, we have seen consistent trends like the steady deregulation and privatization of services, which has left Edinburgh as the sole city in Scotland with a municipal bus operator.
Rail fares across the UK have soared in comparison to those of our European neighbours, and Scottish transport contracts go out to tender in a farcical franchise system whereby public sector companies in other countries can bid...
