First Nations Leaders Pledge to Block Pipeline Expansion
Richard Fidler
At the 2015 Paris COP 21 climate conference Justin Trudeau pledged his newly-elected government would help "to limit global average temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius as well as pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees."
The strategy adopted was two-pronged and contradictory on its face: implementing gradual carbon price increases through carbon taxes or cap-and-trade mechanisms while building more pipeline capacity to boost exports of fossil-fuel resources, especially the products of Alberta’s tar sands.
As environmentalists noted, the approach was inherently futile. Carbon taxes -- contingent on provincial government consent -- assumed higher costs would induce businesses to introduce less climate-destroying technology and practices. And provincial consent was...

Innocence can be dangerous, AXA Insurance warns jokingly in its ads for families with lively kids.
Palestinians aren’t laughing though -- and they are demanding that AXA stop investing in arms makers and banks involved in the brutal occupation of Palestine.
A,
AXA crushes the lives of defenseless families in Palestine, while providing life insurance around the world. What a sickening paradox.
The French insurance giant is accused of violating international law by financing Elbit Systems -- Israel’s leading arms company -- infamous for supplying prohibited weapons that have already killed and injured hundreds of innocent Palestinian women and...
We need urgent action stop Kinder Morgan

Friend,
This Sunday, Justin Trudeau pledged to spend billions of public dollars to bail out Texas oil giant Kinder Morgan and try to save a tar sands pipeline that we know would be a disaster for the climate, bulldoze Indigenous rights and put the entire Pacific coast in danger.
We can’t let this happen. That’s why this Thursday, we’re going to try something new, and something big -- hosting a national, mass meeting to get to work on next steps to stop Trudeau’s big oil bailout and prevent Kinder Morgan from putting the climate, the coast and Indigenous rights in danger.
This won’t be your average conference call. We’re going to get down to work, and we’re going to need everyone to show up ready to dig in...

Fascistic Politics in India and the Left
Raju Das
India is experiencing something like a national emergency. This is in the form of persistent, nation-wide attacks on the basic democratic rights of ordinary citizens, by hyper-nationalist and communal forces which are supporting, and which are supported by, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). They are especially targeting religious minorities, secularists, Leftists, as well as dalits.
No political project hangs in the air. It must be rooted in material conditions and class relations. Indeed, fundamental to the worldview of the forces playing the politics of religion, is the idolization of free-market economics, and of authoritarian politics supported by a mass movement. Authoritarian politics is necessary to implement free-market economics in the interest of property-owning classes. This is...

Exclusive: New report exposes destruction of Borneo’s forests by PepsiCo’s palm oil partner in Indonesia.
Tell PepsiCo to cut conflict palm oil once and for all.
A,
Add this to PepsiCo’s conflict palm oil file: we’ve just released a report that ties the snack food giant to massive-scale deforestation in Indonesia.
PepsiCo has knowingly persisted in conducting business with the Salim Group, a company tied to reckless palm oil producers responsible for the destruction of nearly 10,000 hectares of Borneo’s pristine peat forests––an area...

Climate Change and the Struggle Against the Kinder Morgan Pipeline
Thousands have been pouring onto Vancouver streets, as well as protesting across Canada, against the proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been attempting to square the impossible – expanding oil sands production and building pipelines while addressing climate change. The governments of BC and Canada have ignored theses issues, as well as wider questions about First Nations consultations and sovereignty claims, already in the cases of the Pacific Northwest LNG, Woodfibre LNG and the Site C Dam in BC.
The recent Liberal announcements of ocean protection funds and carbon taxes are partly political dodges as they continue on with Harper’s plans to make Canada an energy super-power based on fossil fuels. Kinder Morgan is in line for approval, even...

A,
Wow! Less than a week after we officially launched the campaign to call on Canada to address our plastics pollution crisis, 30,000 Canadian SumOfUs members have already signed the petition.
Canada has just introduced a new motion that would take on plastics pollution from corporations like McDonalds and Nestlé in a huge way.
Tell Canadian politicians to vote yes for motion M-151.

Thirty-Five Years of Comintern Publishing: A Balancesheet
John Riddell
In June 1983, after returning home from my shift in a machine shop in Brampton, Ontario, I received a visit from two leaders of the New York-based socialist publisher Pathfinder Press, Mary-Alice Waters and Barry Sheppard. They asked me to head up a full-time project to translate, edit, and publish the record of world revolutionary movement in Lenin’s time -- principally, the record of major Communist International (Comintern) gatherings from 1919 to 1923. Pathfinder would commit substantial resources for this work, they said, over a period of a decade or more.
I objected that I had no background in academic research and publishing. Waters and Sheppard countered that given my grasp of history in that...

Another Stream of Martin Luther King’s Legacy
Jeremy Milloy
The Dodge Ram Trucks’ 2018 Super Bowl ad, harnessing the rousing oratory of Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to service, the "Drum Major Instinct" speech, to loving close-ups of 350-horsepower pickup trucks, attracted instant, widespread condemnation. Many lampooned the use of King’s image to sell trucks, and a parody of the ad, recut with King’s critique of the ad industry’s persuasions from the very same speech used by Ram, has been viewed over 2 million times.
The controversy is the latest example of an ad maker stepping just a bit too far in the ongoing, unceasing cannibalization of everything noble, meaningful, fun, or weird in our culture by the machinery of capitalism; the chorus of...

A,
I wanted to take a minute to send a different email than the ones I usually do, and share an extra-special report back of just a few of the incredible things you've accomplished in the last month on three very important campaigns.
Thanks to you, we could be on the verge of stopping Kinder Morgan's $7.4 billion project, your pressure could stop Bell's dangerous internet censorship plan, and you're helping force Ontario politicians to stop Nestlé’s greedy profiteering once and for all!
So, take a load off and check out these stunning campaigns:

Last week, when you found out that Justin Trudeau was planning a $1,000-a-plate elite fundraising dinner in Vancouver just a stone’s throw away from the Kinder Morgan pipeline protests where nearly 200 Indigenous leaders and community members have...
