The May 68 Events and Revolution in the West

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(((( T h e B u l l e t ))))~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Socialist Project e-bulletin ... No. 1604 ... May 13, 2018
The political explosion fifty years ago in May 1968 in France has become a key historical marker for the Left. In an outburst of political revolt, workers seized factories and students occupied universities bringing France to a halt in a series of massive general strikes. ‘Revolution was in the air.’ But political rebellion also had its own roots in 1968 in Italy, Prague, Mexico, and the USA; and from there protests spread across the capitalist core countries. In the demands for an overhaul of political and economic institutions, and in ‘ways of living’, revolutionary possibilities seemed limitless. By the end of May the French government in Paris seemed on the verge of collapse. But by early June the strikes ended and the political crisis in France was over....
Your cellphone bill is too high - let's do something about it
OpenMedia r1
Paov,
How much data do you use on your cell phone per month?
I’m going to go out on a limb here, and guess it’s more than 500MB? (That’s not a shot in the dark: The latest stats on Canada’s mobile data habits suggest we use an average of 1.2GB of data a month — up 25 per cent from the year before.1)
Yet, when the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) asked Rogers, Bell, and Telus to suggest affordable data...
Amazon & the US gun lobby
It's time to put a stop to the NRA's propaganda.
The US Gun Lobby has its own fear mongering communications channel, NRATV, which is fueling distrust in “mainstream media” and spreading rumors of “socialist elites” set on taking away Americans’ guns.
Tell Amazon: stop streaming the US gun lobby's violent rhetoric.
A,
With 5 million members and a multi-million dollar lobbying empire, the NRA (the powerful US gun lobby) is holding the US political system hostage and stonewalling meaningful gun reform. Meanwhile, the lobby’s communications arm, NRATV, is spreading fake news and conspiracy...
We've got Kinder Morgan worried
Let's take the next steps and stop this pipeline once and for all r1
Friends,
In the last few weeks, people from coast to coast, from Victoria to Halifax, rose to oppose Justin Trudeau’s billion dollar bail out for the Kinder Morgan pipeline.
A third of all the Liberal cabinet ministers across the country and dozens of MPs have received this message at their doorstep, and many of them have been confronted at fundraisers, party events, and even the Liberal Convention. The good news is the pressure is working. We keep hearing that the Liberal caucus is starting to crack over the party’s position on the Kinder Morgan pipeline. But the bad news is that Kinder Morgan and Big Oil lobbyists are hard at work too.
So let’s keep the pressure mounting. I’ve been bringing the Stop KM message to my MP,...
Nestle and Kinder Morgan strike deal while Indigenous and community right to water ignored
Switzerland-based Nestle (the bottled water company) has announced it has reached an agreement with Texas-based Kinder Morgan (the pipeline company).
The issue of contention between the two transnationals has been that Kinder Morgan's 890,000 barrel per day tar sands pipeline would have cut through Nestle's water-bottling property in Hope - on Sto:lo territory - in British Columbia where the transnational...
The Family-Party-State Nexus in Nicaragua
The Family-Party-State Nexus in Nicaragua
Trevor Evans
In 1979 a popular uprising led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) overthrew the U.S.-backed Somoza-family dictatorship which had ruled Nicaragua since the 1930s, and in 1984 the Sandinistas and their presidential candidate, Daniel Ortega, decisively won the country’s first free elections in decades. The Sandinistas introduced a major programme of land redistribution and a significant expansion of public health care and education services. However, initial gains were undermined under the impact of an armed opposition (‘the contra’) organized and promoted by the U.S., a collapse of international raw material prices in the early 1980s, and Sandinista policy errors, including an over-ambitious programme of large-scale investments.
In 1990, a war weary population voted for a broad...
