Italy: Requiem for the Second Republic

Steve Hellman

The writing had been on the wall for some time, but the outcome of the Italian election of March 4 shocked almost everyone by the extent to which the status quo was upended. The governing center-left Partito Democratico (PD, Democratic Party) was humiliated: its share of the vote fell nearly 7% compared to the previous general election in 2013 to just under 19%; its secretary, Matteo Renzi, would soon resign his post. The other big loser was Silvio Berlusconi, the dominant figure on the center-right for a generation. His party, Forza Italia (FI, Go Italy!) plunged from 21.6% to 14% and was displaced within the coalition by the increasingly xenophobic, often racist Lega (The League, formerly the...

Kinder Morgans going after our friends

Join me in donating to the legal fund for the Burnaby Mountain land, water, and climate protectors. r1

Dear Friends,

As the Executive Director of 350.org I have the privilege of working with communities and organizers all across the world who are leading the most iconic fights against the fossil fuel industry.

And across the world, one fact is consistent: these fights are led by ordinary people who take on big risks so that our movement can win big. Very much like the people who were arrested on Burnaby Mountain over the last few months standing up to the Kinder Morgan tar sands pipeline. Now, these folks are facing criminal contempt charges and they are looking for contributions to their legal defence fund. Can you join me in helping them out?

I can say with confidence that watching the fight against the Kinder Morgan...

"Incels", Toronto van attack

Trigger warning: violence and sexism.

On Monday, a Toronto man committed a horrible act of violence that killed ten people. Reports confirm that hours before his violent rampage, he posted on Facebook: “the incel revolution has begun.” [1]

An “Incel” or involuntary celibate refers to a man who is angry because women won’t have sex with him. Angry because they feel entitled to women’s bodies. So angry, that these men engage in hate speech and play out violent fantasies against women in the dark corners of the internet. And encourage real-life violence. [2]

For years, journalists reporting on these hate groups have warned about incels turning their violent fantasies into reality. Even now, after the tragic Toronto van attack, online incel groups continue to threaten acid attacks and mass rapes [3] — and Canada isn’t equipped to stop them.

Canada is the only western country in the world without human rights laws banning cyber hate speech [4] — but with enough pressure applied on lawmakers at this very sensitive moment, together we can change this. Will you sign the petition demanding the Trudeau government introduce human rights laws against cyber hate speech before someone else gets hurt?

Planetary crisis

We have a plastic problem so huge it’s being called a “planetary crisis”. [1] Turtles are choking on plastic bags, microplastics are seeping into our seafood and drinking water, and if we don’t do something to cut down our plastic garbage, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. [2-5]

But there’s a common sense solution that would make a big difference: banning single-use plastics.

Canadians create a whopping 3 million tonnes of plastic garbage every single year that winds up polluting our oceans and killing thousands upon thousands of precious marine animals. [6-7] But imagine how much we could cut down our plastic pollution if we weren’t throwing away billions of single-use plastic bags, straws, cups, and bottles.

Supa -- this is our moment. Right now, Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is asking for public input on how Canada can reduce plastic waste and marine litter. A massive petition would show that there’s widespread support for a ban on single-use plastics, and could convince the Liberals to ban them altogether.

So, if you think we need bold action to stop plastic pollution from suffocating our oceans, will you add your name now?

Massive pesticide permit approved in Clayoquot Sound

The BC government just granted a permit to dump millions of litres of a toxic pesticide into fish farms in Clayoquot Sound. The permit comes into effect TOMORROW.

Tell BC Environment Minister George Heyman to immediately revoke Cermaq’s dangerous pesticide permit.

Send an email

A,

Urgent: The BC government quietly green-lighted a permit allowing Norwegian salmon farming giant Cermaq to dump 2.3 million litres of highly toxic pesticides into the Clayoquot Sound -- and the permit comes into effect tomorrow.

34,000 SumOfUs members already pushed BC Environment Minister George Heyman to deny Cermaq's application and announce a review of all pesticide use in open-net pen salmon farms in BC. The review...

Toyota Autoworkers Take on the Liberals

Toyota Autoworkers Take on the Liberals

Bruce Allen

About a hundred autoworkers, led by workers from Toyota, and their supporters rallied in front of Queen’s Park in Toronto on April 22. They were protesting the Liberal government’s decision to allow an "exception" for the auto industry for personal emergency leave (PEL) days. The exemption was brought into effect in January 2017. When the government ushered in a series of reforms to labour law in the province through Bill 148, it kept the PEL day exemption for the auto industry.

Under Bill 148 workers in the province are entitled to 10 days of personal emergency leave. This leave can be used for sickness, bereavement, family emergency. In the event of an illness no doctor’s note...

May Day: Workers' Struggles, International Solidarity, Political Aspirations

May Day:
Workers’ Struggles, International Solidarity, Political Aspirations

For more than 100 years, May Day has symbolized the common struggles of workers around the globe. Why is it largely ignored in North America? The answer lies in part in American labour’s long repression of its own radical past, out of which international May Day was actually born a century ago. It is more important than ever, in the face of relentless capitalist austerity and emerging authoritarian forces on the right, that the North American labour movement reconnect with this history and forge linkages with the international labour movement in the remaking of a socialism for our times.

What's Driving Trade Tensions Between the U.S. and China

What’s Driving Trade Tensions Between the U.S. and China

Marty Hart-Landsberg

There is a lot of concern over the possibility of a trade war between China and the USA. In early April, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his administration was considering levying $100-billion of additional tariffs on Chinese exports, after the Chinese government responded to a previously proposed U.S. tariff hike on Chinese goods of $50-billion by announcing its own equivalent tariff hikes on U.S. exports. And the Chinese government has made it clear it will again respond in kind if these new tariffs are actually imposed.

So, what’s it all about?

To this point, it is worth emphasizing that no new tariffs have in fact been levied, by either the U.S....
