The Ontario Election isn't about Deficits, and that’s a good thing
Michal Rozworski
How big is your deficit? This Ontario election, no one seems to care -- and that’s a decisive positive to emerge from a campaign that’s too often been submerged in the politics of personality.
There is more and more light sneaking through the widening cracks in Canada’s austerity consensus. Hopefully, it will shine not only on the latest vote-buying scandal or bout of red-baiting but hit upon some of the big questions of economic policy. Here, the relevant question is not "how big is your deficit," but "who will it benefit?" Or, put most expansively, "how are you going to transform the economy?"
In part, deficit panic has taken a...

A,
Last week, thanks to your generous donation, we went to McDonald’s annual shareholder meeting in Chicago to call on McDonald’s execs and shareholders to seriously address its ocean-polluting plastic straw problem. With us was marine biologist Dr. Elaine Leung.

Dr. Elaine Leung in Chicago after the meeting
Dr. Elaine presented a shareholder proposal on plastic straws filed by a SumOfUs member, and was able to make the journey thanks to your donation.
In the run up to the meeting, SumOfUs members were all over the media, and put McDonald’s firmly in the spotlight for its polluting ways. Feeling the pressure, McDonald’s execs announced, “we continue to work to find a more sustainable solution for plastic straws globally,” while at the same time fumbling to justify why shareholders shouldn’t vote for our proposal....

The Stanley Cup Finals: Festival of Exploitation?
Nathan Kalman-Lamb
The Stanley Cup Finals have arrived. For ardent hockey fans and their proxies in the mainstream sports media, this is the triumphant culmination of an epic journey of athletic mastery and heroic stoicism. It is the season to wax poetic about the "grit," "toughness," "pain," "heroism," and "sacrifice" that define professional hockey players and render them worthy of a sip from the silver chalice.
Or some such nonsense. Yes, this is a narrative that sells tickets and buys clicks, but don’t be fooled: it is also one that deftly conceals the violence, harm, and exploitation that underpin the business of professional hockey, much like most other high-performance spectator sport.
Now, I recognize that for...

URGENT: Kinder Morgan bailout

Dear PAOV,
We have less than 5 days to stop the Kinder Morgan bailout.
The Trudeau government has been holding secret meetings with Kinder Morgan for weeks, negotiating an outrageous scheme to bail out the Texas corporation’s floundering pipeline and tanker project with your hard-earned tax dollars. [1]
Now, Oil Minister Jim Carr is promising a deal before May 31st -- and if we’re going to stop this handout to big oil, we need to act fast. [2]
We’re producing a hard-hitting “No Kinder Morgan Bailout” radio ad -- and with your help we can flood the airwaves in 17 BC ridings where Liberal MPs are already worried about losing their seats...

Loblaws billionaire CEO makes as much money in one day as cashiers who work for him make in an entire year -- and now he’s trying to block a proposal to pay them fairly. [1-2]
Sign here if you think it’s wrong for Loblaws to make billions in profits while refusing to pay their workers a fair wage.
Weston makes over $7.5 million a year off the backs of people who earn poverty wages in his stores. But at Loblaws’ annual shareholder meeting last week he rallied shareholders to vote down a proposal to pay the people who work for him enough to feed their families. [3-4]
Leadnow member Erin has started a petition calling on Loblaws to pay their employees a living wage. The story is already blowing up in the media, and a flood of signatures now could force Loblaws to reconsider the fair wage proposal.

Help us win proportional representation with the one thing more powerful than the media

Thank you so much to those of you who have chipped in so far for materials to give to voters and to launch another blast of social media advertising in BC.
As a grassroots citizens campaign, it's hard to overstate what we're up against.
Again this week, the BC media was full of influential columnists railing against proportional representation and the referendum.
Did you know? Almost every media outlet covering the referendum in BC is owned by one of three corporations.

How Mexicos Drug War Really Looks

© Janet Jarman/Redux for the Open Society Foundations A portrait shows a woman overcome with grief and horror. She is mourning those she lost when, in 2009, a drug gang in Mexico murdered 19 young people at a treatment center. Her agony is visceral, and it’s a feeling countless Mexicans personally understand. This work of art—which can be seen, along with many others, at the Museum of Drug Policy, a pop-up exhibition that opened this week in Mexico City—asks us to look at the true costs of drug control. As a new report from the Open Society Justice initiative and eight Mexican partner groups shows, these costs don’t only hurt people; they also harm political and justice systems. A new vision is badly needed. The old ways of thinking have already cost too much.

A -- I’ve just returned from a whirlwind of incredible shareholder meetings and petition deliveries, and wanted to make sure you saw just some of the incredible things you’ve made happen in the last month. So take a load off and check this out:
You’re holding Kinder Morgan’s feet to the fire.

You made history. At the Kinder Morgan annual shareholder meeting in Houston, Texas, over 50% of shareholders voted for a sustainability disclosure resolution you helped support -- even though senior management unanimously voted against it.
The resolution was presented by Chief Judy Wilson, Neskonlith, Secwepemc Nation. It was backed by billions of dollars of shareholder value -- and specifically mentioned the risks to business of Indigenous-led opposition to Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain...
