Breaking: McDonalds

A,

Incredible. Thanks to you, McDonald’s UK and Ireland will begin transitioning to paper straws in all of its restaurants starting in September!

And more than that, McDonald’s has also begun testing alternatives to plastic straws in Belgium, and has just announced similar trials will start in the U.S., France, Sweden, Norway and Australia later this year. In addition, it will begin tests to offer straws upon request only in several countries including Malaysia.

You have made one of the world’s largest corporations take notice and change its ways. Thank you.

There is still more to do. McDonald’s needs to push out these changes everywhere it operates -- while ensuring it continues to cater for disabled people (many of whom need a straw) in all its outlets. And of course, McDonald’s and all corporations need to take urgent and sustained action to tackle the plastic pollution crisis they’ve helped create.

But for today: thank...

We All Live in a Mediocracy

Alain Deneault has become one of the most important Canadian public intellectuals Anglosphere audiences have never heard of. Having completed a doctorate on the economic thought of German social theorist Georg Simmel under the supervision of Jacques Rancière at Université Paris VIII, Deneault returned to Canada and promptly published a number of works notable for demonstrating the Canadian state’s links to the global mining sector on the one hand, and Canada’s involvement in the spread and use of tax havens worldwide on the other. Since that time, Deneault has become one of the country’s foremost experts on these topics, frequently appearing in French language media in both Canada and abroad, having recently offered commentary on the Paradise...

The Nightmare of Neoliberal Fascism

Henry A. Giroux interviewed by Mark Karlin

Mark Karlin (MK): Why is it important to have an historical understanding of fascism to shed light on the age of Trump?

Henry A. Giroux (HG): The conditions leading to fascism do not exist in some ethereal space outside of history. Nor are they fixed in a static moment in the past. As Hannah Arendt reminds us, the protean elements of fascism always run the risk of crystallizing into new forms. Historical memory is a prerequisite to the political and moral witnessing necessary to successfully counter growing fascism in the United States today. As Richard Evans, the renowned historian of modern Germany, observes, the Trump administration may not replicate all the features...

Democracy and Ecological Crisis

Nancy Holmstrom

Last fall 15,000 scientists issued a second dire notice to humanity that we are on a collision course with the limits of our planet. They concluded, "To prevent widespread misery, humanity must practice a more environmentally sustainable alternative to business as usual," including "reassess[ing]... the role of an economy rooted in growth." That means that we have to challenge capitalism; there is no capitalism without growth. Rosa Luxemburg’s statement on the eve of World War I that the choice is between socialism or barbarism was never more true. But today our struggle is about our very existence.

This reality should shape the way we think about politics and how we do politics. Democracy is often said to be...

Send an email to the top executives at the CPP to keep our valuable pension money out of this risky pipeline project.

A,

Despite industry experts calling the Trans Mountain pipeline project a risky investment, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) is still seriously considering investing your retirement savings in this dangerous project.

We've already sent over 13,000 emails to top executives and we need to keep flooding their inboxes as they prepare to make their final decision in the coming weeks. Even if you already have written, you can write again and ensure they do not ignore the strong message people in Canada are sending: we don't want our retirement fund put at risk by investing in this doomed project.

Will you send an email to the top CPPIB...

A Win for Democracy

Open Society Foundations A group of people standing on top of a green car © Anush Babajanyan/Redux
As recently as a few months ago, conventional wisdom held that the Armenian people were indifferent to democracy and would not effectively resist the attempt by Serzh Sargysan, the country’s longtime strongman ruler, to expand his powers. But the conventional wisdom was wrong. To the surprise of many, including democracy experts in Armenia, Sargysan’s power grab was resisted by a robust nonviolent protest movement. Protesters forced him to step down, and a new prime minister—who embraces the democratic principles of openness, transparency, and accountability—has taken leadership of the country. At a time when open society seems under threat all over the world, Armenia’s democratic awakening stands as a rebuke to authoritarians everywhere.

Israel's Environmental Colonialism and Ecoapartheid

Israel's Environmental Colonialism and Ecoapartheid

Ben Lorber

Since the idea of Zionism first gripped the minds of a few intellectuals and the limbs of many agrarian pioneers in the early 20th century, the state of Israel has presented its settlement of the land of Palestine, and its uprooting of the Palestinian people, as a rejuvenation of the earth. By "greenwashing" the occupation, Israel hides its apartheid behind an environmentalist mirage, and distracts public attention not only from its brutal oppression of the Palestinian people, but from its large-scale degradation of the earth upon which these tragedies unfold.

Determined to "make the desert bloom," an international organization -- the Jewish National Fund-Keren Kayemet LeYisrael (JNF-KKL, or JNF) planted forests, recreational parks and nature reserves to...
