Dear PAofVic,
I wanted to let you know about something quite incredible that’s about to begin in the service of peace. Over the next year, a supporter of Quaker peace and social justice work, Lynn Salvo, is planning to ride her bike around North America so that the rides connect up to form a giant peace symbol. She wants her rides to build peace and this is where...

Mining companies dump 220 million tonnes of hazardous mining waste directly into our oceans, rivers, lakes and streams every year with virtual impunity.
We just helped push Citigroup to stop financing this practice. Now, tell JPMorgan Chase to stop backing these dirty and destructive mining corporations.
A,
Big news: You helped push Citigroup to stop investing in mining companies that are dumping toxic mining waste directly into our waters, destroying pristine ecosystems, decimating fish populations and poisoning communities.
Now we're targeting JPMorgan...

Who's Afraid of Fare-Free Public Transit?
Josh Cohen
Elizabeth Bauerle is a research scientist at the University of Washington’s medical center. To get from her home in the north Seattle suburb of Shoreline to her job on the Seattle campus, she can either drive or take two buses.
Like all of us, Bauerle weighs cost, convenience and personal values in deciding how she’ll travel to work. She says the two-bus trip can take as much 20 to 30 minutes longer than driving. That time difference would matter less to Bauerle if she wasn’t paying for the bus out of pocket, but the cost plus time has her grabbing the car keys most mornings, joining the roughly 34 per cent of University of Washington employees...

Argentina: Macri's Neoliberal Fantasies
Claudio Katz
In the middle of his term, Argentinian president Mauricio Macri cannot hide the monumental abyss between his promises and reality. The promise was of an influx of dollars to lower inflation, with high growth, job creation, an entrepreneurial boom and eradication of social assistance. A drastic reduction of the fiscal deficit and a flow of money for public works through the ending of corruption was also predicted. It was also proclaimed that the "return to the world" would be rewarded with huge productive financing and an expansion of exports.
The failure of these forecasts was very visible from the beginning. Hence the government moved the take-off to the second half of the year and then postponed it to...

Letter to the People of Brazil
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva
For two months now, I have been unjustly incarcerated without having committed any crime. For two months I have been unable to travel the country I love, bringing the message of hope of a better and more just Brazil, with opportunities for all, as I always did during 45 years of public life.
I was deprived of my daily life with my sons and my daughter, my grandsons and granddaughters, my great-granddaughter, my friends and comrades. But I have no doubt that they have put me here to prevent me from being with my larger family: the Brazilian people. This is what distresses me the most, because I know that outside, every day,...

New Governments in both Spain and Catalonia: Will the Impasse Persist?
On June 1, less than three weeks after a new government was finally allowed to take office in Catalonia, the Spanish government of Mariano Rajoy‘s People’s Party (PP) -- which had headed the central state’s harsh repression of Catalan self-determination -- was defeated in a parliamentary no-confidence vote prompted by a High Court conviction of leading PP officials in a public contracts corruption case.
The vote, initiated by the Spanish social-democratic PSOE, was supported by the left party Unidos Podemos and Catalan and Basque nationalist parties in the Spanish parliament. PSOE federal secretary Pedro Sánchez became Spain’s new prime minister.
These events open a new phase in the Spanish state’s ongoing institutional, social-economic...

Women in West Virginia Teach Powerful Lessons
The recent wildcat strike by teachers and support staff in West Virginia is being called one of the most important events in the labour movement since the 1970s. We would like to take a closer look and examine its success and discuss its relevance to the situation here in Canada.
Presenters:
- Kate Doyle Griffiths (via Skype) is active with International Women’s Strike-U.S. and the Red Bloom collective in New York City. Kate spent time in West Virginia during the strike.
- David Camfield is active with Winnipeg Labour Council and Solidarity Winnipeg.
