Ontario Looks Right

Herman Rosenfeld

While U.S. socialists have always challenged the myth of American exceptionalism -- that the U.S. is immune to class struggle and a politics linked to it -- they tend to have the opposite view of Canadian politics: that the latter is somehow exceptional, rooted in a classic social-democratic and even socialist political culture that makes it immune to reactionary trends like Trumpism and the right-wing populist wave around the world.

But Canada, and its industrial heartland and largest province of Ontario, is far from immune from these forces. Case in point: the June 7 election of a right-wing populist government of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario (PC), led by politician and businessman Doug Ford.

Canada has gone...

Mexico Elections and NAFTA

LeftStreamed:

Mexico Elections and NAFTA

Despite fierce opposition from Big Business and the media, Andrés Manuel López Obrador is likely to be elected President of Mexico on July 1 and have a majority in both houses of Congress. How did this rejection of the major parties come about? Is he a "leftist" or "populist" as widely purported in the North American press? What kind of change can be expected? What obstacles will the new government face?

Part 1: AMLO Needs to Win by 15% For This to Stick
Dr. John Ackerman (professor of Law at UNAM), discusses the myth of the transition to democracy in Mexico, the looming prospect of fraud in the upcoming presidential election, and the promise of a progressive government led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

A Call for the NDP to Withdraw from the Canada-Israel Interparliamentary Group

The undersigned are appalled by the recent deaths in Gaza. At least 110 Palestinians have been killed and thousands injured by sniper fire and noxious gas used by the Israeli military. The recent violence takes place alongside ongoing land theft, destruction of olive groves, construction of Jewish-only roads, imprisonment without due process and a blockade of Gaza. During its 70-year history Israel has been as unjust toward Palestinians as the white-ruled apartheid state was to Black South Africans.

We are concerned that members of parliament would seek to strengthen relations with a country systematically violating Palestinian rights.

In particular, we are dismayed that NDP justice critic Murray Rankin and NDP defence critic...

Doug Ford -- Ontario’s Donald Trump?

Canadians are dealing with their own election aftermath after Doug Ford, a leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and a figure some compare to U.S. President Donald Trump, was elected premier of the province earlier this month. Todd Gordon is author of Imperialist Canada and teaches at Wilfrid Laurier University at Brantford. He answered questions from Ashley Smith about what led to Ford’s election and what this means for Canadian politics.

Ashley Smith (AS): The election results in Ontario are very disturbing. Who is Doug Ford and how did he win?

Todd Gordon (TG): The Conservative Party (known in Ontario as the Progressive Conservatives, or PC) won the Ontario election with 40 per cent of the...

Grieve the Beloved Children: Israel and the War on Children

Judith Deutsch

The Palestinian Health Ministry reported on June 1st that a beautiful young woman medic, Razan Ashraf Najjar, 21, was the second medic to be killed by Israeli army fire since March 30th. To date, Israel has killed 130 and injured more than 13,400 non-violent people in Gaza for protesting the siege. Among the injured are 238 medics, 29 shot with live fire after being directly targeted with high-velocity gas bombs.

Still, Israel is accorded impunity. Even when crimes are acknowledged, they "may" constitute a war crime or a crime against peace (Nuremberg), Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s entire infrastructure "may" render Gaza unliveable by 2017, 2018, 2019 or 2020, Gaza "may" be a...
