Israels New Basic Law and the Making of the Apartheid State

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~(((( T h e B u l l e t ))))~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Socialist Project e-bulletin ... No. 1643 ... July 26, 2018
______________________________________________________________
Israel’s New Basic Law and the Making of the Apartheid State
The Socialist Project (SP) joins Israeli, Palestinian, and international civil society organizations in condemning the "Basic Law: Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish People" which recently passed the Israeli Knesset (with 62 in favor, 55 against and two abstentions on 19 July 2018). The Jewish supremacy enshrined in the law amounts to the formal incorporation of apartheid as an Israeli constitutional principle.
Apartheid is defined by the United Nations (in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court) as "an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups." Such an order has long been in place in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT),...
Hot off the press - Quaker Concern Summer 2018!
We're pleased to share the Summer 2018 issue of Canadian Friends Service Committee's newsletter - Quaker Concern!
It starts with Jennifer Preston and Rachel Singleton-Polster offering a day by day description of what it's like to represent Quakers for a week at the United Nations.
Margaret McCaffrey and Verena Tan explore a major problem with a simple fix as they describe how people are being released from Canadian courts without their belongings and with no way to get them!
Keira Mann and Matt Legge look at conscientious objection to military service in Canada, and Canadian Friends' support for US war resisters and conscientious objectors in other countries, including Israel.
As usual, we also offer brief news updates and a breakdown of recent travel undertaken in the work and witness of CFSC. You can find the current and previous issues of Quaker Concern at https://quakerconcern.ca, where you can also download them in PDF.
Quaker Concern is also available in print copy to all donors (contact us to find out more).
Big Data Wont End This Injustice
Open Society Foundations A young man with outstretched arms in front of a police officer © Patrik Stollarz/AFP/Getty
During a recent conference in Belgium on racial and ethnic profiling—which brought together police, policymakers, civil society organizations, and members of the community—two things were made clear. First, many law enforcement officers believe ethnic and racial profiling is wrong but feel powerless to stop it. Second, in order to move beyond awareness of the problem to actually solving it, policymakers and civil society groups must remain engaged, focused, and just as willing to support potential allies as they are to challenge dedicated foes. While initiatives to collect data on how officers treat citizens are essential, merely cataloging abuses is not enough. To combat this threat to the health of our communities, we must work together to ensure the benefits of equality and safety are truly enjoyed by all.
Good News! Success stories from the Amazon
You’ve just won a major victory
Dear friend,
We’re excited to share some good news stories with you!
The Guardians of the Amazon are a brave group of men from the Guajarara tribe who are working tirelessly to defend the territory they share with uncontacted neighbors from illegal loggers.
The Guardians are struggling alone against violent logging mafias with very little support from the Brazilian government. We used your donations and your emails to put pressure on Brazil to act. It worked! A few weeks ago, environmental police finally showed up to help the Guardians kick loggers out of their territory. Though the police didn't stay long, and the Guardians are still in grave need of more support from the authorities, this goes to show that together we can make a real difference.
Will you send a message to your fund manager now to support human rights at Saputo?
Will you rise for real climate action?
Trudeau’s ready to finalize the pipeline buyout and we’re ready to rise. r1
Dear PAOV,
It’s official. The Trudeau government has confirmed it plans to finalize the deal to buy Kinder Morgan’s TransMountain project by September.
It goes without saying that at a time when climate catastrophe is a lived reality, pouring billions of tax dollars into a dangerous fossil fuel project is absolutely in conflict with the direction we need to move. Up until now, we were fighting our government’s support for the fossil fuel industry. From this point on, we’re up against a government that has become a fossil fuel company.
We know that people power is prepared to rise to this new challenge. On September 8th, we have the opportunity to join thousands of communities across the world to set the bar...
Cancel the Contracts
Call on tech companies to side with immigrants and renounce their contracts with Frontex and ICE!
A,
So far, over 40,000 SumOfUs members from all around the world have signed our petition demanding that Microsoft drop its contract with Trump's deportation force knows as "ICE" - but your name is missing A.
Will you join thousands of other SumOfUs members and sign the petition demanding Microsoft end its contract with ICE?
In the United States, ICE relies on Microsoft surveillance technology to tear families apart by tracking down undocumented immigrants in their places of work, their schools, and their own homes. Across the Atlantic, Europe's immigration agency Frontex relies on Microsoft BI, a data analytics software, to manage its data.
But together, we can pressure the tech industry to side with immigrants.
