Proportional Representaion

We’re ready to go all in on the biggest campaign we’ve ever run in BC to win proportional representation for our Province. But before we can get to work, we need to know if you’re with us.

JOIN THE CAMPAIGN Dear PAOV,

It’s on! BC’s Attorney General has just recommended that in October of this year, British Columbians will vote in a referendum on proportional representation. [1]...

The Canadian Pension Plan: The Deadly Hand of the Market

Judith Deutsch

A recent article in the Toronto Star and its accompanying photo bear comment. The reaching hands are not of rioting, starving people grasping for food but of stockbrokers on the trading floor. The article, about protecting individual portfolios, counsels people to know of their options though "the majority of investors have little or no understanding of puts and calls and, in most cases, don’t want to be bothered." A number of practices keep the public uninformed, including a plethora of neologisms that defy comprehension, lack of transparency, and skewed computations that omit life’s crucial externalities. Economics has been called the "dismal science," but "abysmal" more fittingly describes its deadly impact on people worldwide. Read more: The Canadian Pension Plan: The Deadly Hand of the Market

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board should support the public good, not Trudeau's pipeline
Over the years, The Council of Canadians has been critical of Canada Pension Plan Investment Board's investments in Goldcorp (the transnational mining corporation), Laricina Energy Ltd. (that has major holdings in the tar sands), and Anglian Water (the private, for-profit water company in England).

Your cell phone bill is too high

OpenMedia r1

Paov,

When the government asked The Big Three to come up with affordable data plans for Canadians — because of the desperate need to do something about our highest-in-the-world mobile bills1 — they came back with data-only plans of 500MB for $30 a month.2

Meanwhile, just this weekend Rogers quietly announced a flash-in-the-pan deal only for new customers in Manitoba for 30GB for $80 (plus Canada-wide calling).3, 4

WHAT IS A FAIR PRICE FOR DATA?

Let’s...

Bezos

At Amazon’s annual general meeting, we’re asking shareholders to give CEO Jeff Bezos someone to answer to by appointing an independent chair of the board.

A,

With Amazon, convenience has a cost. Behind the two-day shipping and monthly toilet paper deliveries, Amazon has another side that Jeff Bezos, as both CEO and chair of the board, doesn't want you to know about: profiting from far-right media like NRATV, paying employees so little they can’t put food on the table, and skirting taxes that pay for social services.

Our communities are suffering under Jeff Bezos’ leadership. And it’s no surprise: lack of accountability is built into Amazon’s corporate structure, where Bezos is both...

Kinder-Morgan Fiasco: The Cat Is Out of the Bag at the CPPIB

Kinder-Morgan Fiasco: The Cat Is Out of the Bag at the CPPIB

Bob Farkas

In the weeks and months ahead, there will be many political casualties of the Liberal government’s crisis surrounding the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion. The first of these, however, was the carefully-crafted illusion that the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board’s (CPPIB) investment decisions are free from political influence. Over two decades, the Board had painstakingly constructed the pretence that Board decisions stood above retail politics.

Despite occasional whispers of politically-inspired Board investments and industrial policy by stealth, the public position of the Board has been a steadfast insistence on autonomy and independence. For two decades, a parade of faith groups, trade unionists, environmentalists, and mining justice activists beat a...

BREAKING: Trudeaus buying Kinder Morgans pipeline

The Trudeau government just committed $4.5 billion to buying the TransMountain pipeline. r1

PAOV,

We just learned that the Trudeau government will spend $4.5 billion in public money to buy the TransMountain pipeline from Kinder Morgan along with the company’s core assets.

There’s a victory here. Indigenous-led and people-powered organizing has officially forced one of the world’s largest oil companies to abandon a massive tar sands pipeline. Unfortunately, this also means that the Canadian government isn’t just at the beck and call of oil companies, it’s become one.

Like many of you, we hoped that Kinder Morgan abandoning this project would be the end of this fight, forcing Justin Trudeau to reject pipeline politics so we could get on with the work of pushing Canada to lead the 100% renewable energy revolution. But it’s not,...

Call on Canada to catch up to the EU and protect the bees.

A,

Canada is now falling dangerously behind in the global fight to save the bees.

Last month, the European Union (EU) banned the three major bee-killing neonic pesticides -- and the ban will be enacted by the end of 2018. Meanwhile, Canada will ban only 1 of the 3 bee-killing neonics, and only by 2022.

And make no mistake, Canadian bees need saving. Just last week, CBC reported that beekeepers in New Brunswick are finding that...
