No pipelines in a Climate Emergency

What part of 'emergency' do people they not understand? ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

Right now, Trudeau's government is debating a bill in Parliament that would declare a National Climate Emergency. If it passes (and we think it absolutely should), then the next test will be on June 18th, when the Trudeau government will decide whether to issue new permits for the Trans Mountain pipeline.

That means we have just a few weeks to remind them that a climate emergency is no time to be approving a tar sands pipeline.

Write a letter to Trudeau’s cabinet and let them know that they need to reject the Trans Mountain pipeline.

TAKE ACTION NOW

This kinda sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Well if it does, that’s because Trudeau already approved the pipeline back in 2016. Indigenous and environmental legal challenges, backed by a groundswell of public opposition, led to a resounding defeat in the courts last August. But the federal government has pushed forward, undeterred, and may be close to rubber stamping the disastrous pipeline yet again.

[Sjsall] upcoming talk

Dear Friends of SJS,

Please join us this coming week for a conversation with Dahr Jamail, celebrated author of:

The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption

Wednesday, June 5, 7 pm

University of Victoria

David Turpin Bldg A110

Dahr Jamail, based in Port Townsend, Washington, is an independent, award-winning journalist and author of four books as well as more than 100 articles on what he prefers to call “climate disruption.” He was one of a few unembedded journalists in Iraq during the 2003 invasion. His stories have been published in The Guardian, The Nation, Huffington Post, and The Independent and elsewhere, and he is a full-time writer for Truthout.

“My book and my talks provide a full and comprehensive overview of how far along we are on this runaway climate disruption path,” said Jamail. “Then...

Calls for political action are reverberating : in the news this week

body. rabble.ca logo Calls for political action on the climate crisis are reverberating through communities across the country. A flurry of decentralized, community-organized "Green New Deal" town halls are taking place in public libraries and community spaces across Canada, drumming up support for and engagement in shaping the policy platform. Students have kept up the momentum following their nationwide climate strike earlier this month. Grassroots direct action groups, like Extinction Rebellion, are starting to see their demands translate into votes -- with cities around the world, Ottawa included, declaring a "climate emergency" at the municipal level.

As the alarm bells on the climate emergency ring ever louder, support for Canada's Green Party is growing, writes Duncan Cameron. Just last week, Green Party Leader Elizabeth May presented a 20-point green action plan called "Mission Possible." And with 17 elected party members at the provincial and federal levels, the Greens look to be competitive in a number of federal ridings across Canada in the October 21 election. So much so that May has publicly started discussing a potential coalition with the Liberals, should the federal election result in a hung parliament.

Maybe we need to get used to the idea of a hung parliament, writes politics reporter Karl Nerenberg. As we head into the federal election, Canadians should remember that "when we hold an election we are electing not a government but a Parliament. A party only gets the right to govern when it can demonstrate it has the confidence of Parliament." And the true political leaders deserving of our full confidence, writes David Suzuki, work for us. Not the fossil fuel industry.

The Canadian boreal forest is not disposable

This donut giant needs a #BetterCup ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

We’re sending a message to Dunkin’ Donuts: it’s time for them to join the movement for a #BetterCup. Will you join us?

Dunkin’ claims that they’re committed to sustainability, but there’s a big donut-shaped hole at the center of that claim. Their paper cups are supplied by companies linked to the destruction of the Canadian boreal forest, one of the most important forests on the planet.

Tell Dunkin’ that the Canadian boreal is not disposable.

TAKE ACTION NOW

The boreal is iconic: stretching from coast to coast, it’s the largest remaining intact forest on the planet and makes up more than half of Canada’s land mass. Hundreds of Indigenous Nations rely on the boreal for their ways of life. The forest is home to endangered wildlife like boreal caribou, who need large tracts of healthy forest to survive. And it stores more carbon than all the tropical rainforests in the world combined, making it essential to fight climate catastrophe.

Taking the witness stand

NationBuilder r1

Paov --

On Monday, our first expert witness will take the stand in the fight to defend Canadian public health care from the legal attack launched by for-profit medical clinic CEO Brian Day.

The stakes couldn’t be higher: Day’s goal is to bring U.S.-style health care to Canada -- the kind of system where people go bankrupt, lose their homes and life savings, or worse, because they can't afford treatment when they need it.

After months of testimony from Day’s side in the case, it’s our turn before the judge.

Our first expert witness is Marie-Claude Prémont, a well-respected Professor of Law at the École Nationale d'Administration Publique. Marie-Claude will present evidence on how Chaoulli v. Quebec,...
