Like so many people around the world, we have been filled with horror and grief since hearing about the terrorist attack and mass shooting that happened against the Muslim community in New Zealand.

Though this terrible act was perpetrated halfway around the world, it is important for us to recognize that Islamophobia and racism exist in Canada as well. It was just two years ago that six Muslims were murdered in Quebec City. Police-reported hate crimes went up 47% in Canada in 2017, led by growth in violence targeting Muslim, Jewish and Black communities.[1] There are at least 300 known white supremacist organizations currently active in Canada.

Yesterday, approximately 50 people were shot and killed inside a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand. As a way to stand against Islamophobia, and white supremacy, while also remembering those who were murdered and showing support for their families and communities, this event is to show solidarity with the Muslim community, as well as any other impacted communities.

Lucia is an Indigenous Nahuatl, from the central zone of the state of Veracruz, Mexico, a teacher of indigenous education since 2002. She has actively participated in the foundation of the Democratic Movement of Teachers in Veracruz - MMPV- and is currently a political leader collective "Totlahtol Yoltok".

As members of the Open Forum Against Racism (OFAR), we are in support of the Students’ Open Forum Against Racism (SOFAR), at the University of Victoria. Both groups seek to address institutional racism and colonialism. SOFAR is specifically composed of UVic students who are working towards challenging on-campus and institutional racism, colonialism and systems of heteronormativity, patriarchy, and ableism.

The SOFAR is planning an interactive Storytelling Workshop for tomorrow, Thursday 7th March 2019, 6-8pm in the Student Union Building. This workshop is a student-led initiative to have a conversation about a mandatory general education requirement on anti-racism and anti-colonialism for all students...
