Dear Friends of SJS,
VIPIRG needs your SUPPORT!!
Hi everyone,
We're writing to you at a very important time. VIPIRG, the organization you have known and loved since the 80s, has to go to referendum in the coming week. If we lose this referendum, we will no longer be able to provide any services on the UVic campus.
What this means is that we must ask UVic undergraduate students to continue to support us through the $3.00 per semester fee that makes up the majority of our organization's funding. If we lose this referendum, we not only lose the vast majority of our funding, but we also lose our right to exist on campus in the space we currently rent from the UVSS. In other words, losing the referendum could...

Dear Paov --
On February 19, the provincial government released BC Budget 2019. Co-chair Edith MacHattie and organizer Nadine Nakagawa attended the budget lockup on behalf of the BC Health Coalition. We’ve compiled some of the highlights below:
1. Full elimination of MSP fees
Thanks to the tireless work of BC Health Coalition members and others across the province, BC Budget 2019 shows the full elimination of MSP fees as of January 1, 2020. This regressive tax placed an unfair burden on low and middle-income people across the province and we celebrate the work of advocates who are responsible for this victory.
2. Preliminary Poverty Reduction Measures
The first ever BC Poverty Reduction Plan will be announced in March and this budget included some measures to reduce poverty in BC including:
o B.C. Child Opportunity Benefit for families with children up to...

Stolen Sisters Memorial March 2019
On Saturday, February 16th, 2019 we will gather on the un-ceded and traditional territories of the Lekwungen communities (Victoria, BC) for the annual Stolen Sisters Memorial March to honour the memories of all those Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people who have gone missing and been murdered. We walk in unity to support and hold up their families, loved ones and nations through this loss. In this way we remember and show the strength of our love for our relations.
Please walk with us!

What's new in 2019
Hi everyone,
2019 is off to a busy start for all of us here at Survival. I’m sure many of you are closely following the situation in Brazil, where tribes are facing the biggest threat to their survival in decades.
In the few short weeks President Bolsonaro has been in power, there’s been a spike in land invasions and violent attacks on communities. I wanted to share this new message from Antonio Wilson Guajajara, direct from Brazil, appealing for international help to save his forest.
As we kick off 2019, you can be sure that we’ll keep you updated with the situation on the ground. Remember to follow Survival on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for the latest developments and to help us share messages from tribal people as widely as possible.
Here’s the latest from us this month.

Enough is enough.
Dear friends,It's time to stand up and say enough is enough. Since Jair Bolsonaro's election, violence and attacks against Brazilian Indians have increased drastically.
This Thursday, indigenous people across Brazil will be protesting, and they're calling for international support. Survival stands in solidarity with them.
Help us show Bolsonaro that the world is watching.
What can you do?
- SHARE messages from indigenous people far and wide. Help us ensure their voices are heard.
- SHARE Survival's response to Bolsonaro's "declaration of war" against Brazil's indigenous peoples.
- FOLLOW Survival on Twitter and Facebook to be alerted every time we broadcast the voices of Brazilian tribes. We post daily from @Survival and @SarahDeeSvl.
- JOIN US at 9am this Thursday 31 January at the Embassy of Brazil in London, UK. Bring yourselves and your friends as protest alongside indigenous people across Brazil.
