Emergency rally Saturday and other events

Dear Friends of SJS,
Emergency rally Saturday, Noon, tourist info booth. "Open the border: Stop bombing Syria!"

Spread the word. If you are Facebook the event is https://www.facebook.com/events/866680666713863/

You will all by now have seen the heart-rending photograph of three-year-old Aylan Kurdi, a Syrian refugee who drowned off the Turkish coast along with his five-year-old brother Galib and mother Rehan trying to escape their war-torn country.

This is a Canadian shame as well.

Aylan’s family was trying to enter Canada, sponsored by their aunt in Vancouver. But in June, Harper’s vicious, anti-immigrant government rejected their application.

Under the Tories, the number...

Saturday Non- 1 pm at Government & Wharf, Inner Harbour, beside Tourist Information Office Join the demonstration on Saturday at noon declaring that No One is Illegal. Bring homemade signs saying calling on our government to open the borders and showing how immigrants are welcome here.

r1 BCSEA Monthly September 2015

Welcome to the First Edition of BCSEA's Monthly Newsletter

Welcome to the first edition of BCSEA’s monthly newsletter, launched to keep you up to date and informed about our work to promote sustainable energy in BC.

Last month, the Board appointed a new Executive Director, and we’re busy making plans to sharpen our focus on making renewable energy and energy conservation accessible to all British Columbians. Of course, our day-to-day work continues, including participating in the City of Vancouver’s Renewable City stakeholder engagement process, submitting comments on the Ministry of Environment’s intentions paper on GHG offset regulations and the BC Government’s Climate Leadership Plan, hosting six events around the province later this month...

Opportunities to volunteer exist in these areas:

A) Scientific Research Projects. There are over 20 projects here. Examples:
Biodiversity in specific areas (e.g. Wadi AlQuf, Al-Makhrour, Wadi Fukin)
including Field work, research on diverse groups of living things (birds,
mammals, insects, snails, medical plants), and research on geology,
paleontology, and ethnology.

B) Ecosystem structures: Design of living outdoor and animal/plant exhibits
that interactive and not “zoo like” or “garden like”). The main goal is to
recreate a habitat that will allow a growth in number of species and an
equilibrium in the ecosystem created. Here people interested as well as
landscape designers, architects, and others who can contribute are needed.

C) Education/behavioral change: Developing the education system in schools,
to increase the curiosity for the children and the way they are thinking
about the nature around themselves. Developing and training children about
recycling/ up-cycling. And developing SMART science exhibition for students
in the museum.

Hi folks,
Our billboard from Pat Bay highway came down today. Our committees, Victoria Coalition Against Israeli Apartheid and Victoria Friends of Cuba sends a great big thanks to all the many folks who helped us with putting it up, taking it down, sending funding and hundreds of letters of support to make sure that it stayed up. We've never seen or received as much support as we have received for this project.
It was a well worth project to have been part of. Thousands of people were able to see it.
Now it will be down for one month and go up again in Nanaimo in October.
We shall continue our struggle until Israel will end its Apartheid and Occupation of Palestine.
Always in solidarity and friendship,

Mentally Ill? Welcome to Prison

Brave New Films

More than half of all suspects shot and killed by police were suffering from mental illness - this is crazy.

And over 300,000 Americans in prison today have a mental illness diagnosis.

That’s why today we are releasing part one of our new series, This is Crazy: Criminalizing Mental Illness. This three part series calls on the critical and immediate need for the treatment of mental health through a public health system, not the barbaric criminalization of it.
