Dear Friends of SJS,
Hoping that all of you have some special people to share the upcoming holiday with in whatever way you can.
There several events next week that remind us that many in our communities still struggle to find ways to share holidays with their families and friends. Other events encourage us to find other ways to make the changes necessary:

Two Upcoming Events
Canada in Africa - 300 years of Aid and Exploitation with Yves Engler, Canadian Author & Activist 7:30 pm Tuesday, October 6 UVic, Harry Hickman, Room 105
Free admission. Donations are welcomed.
Canadian author, Yves Engler, launches his latest critical overview of Canadian policy towards the African continent. Based on an exhaustive look at the public record as well as on-the-ground research, Canada in Africa documents Canadian involvement in the transatlantic slave trade, "scramble for Africa", missionary movement and European colonialism. Ottawa's promotion of neoliberal economic prescriptions, which have benefitted Canadian mining companies, is often bitterly resisted by the anticolonial struggles of local communities.Engler sheds light on Canada's part in the violence that has engulfed Somalia, Rwanda and the Congo, while it shows indifference to the dire effects of climate change on ever-growing numbers of Africans."This should be required...

from Palestine by Professor Mazin Qumsiyeh

Note: An uprising is on the way here despite Mahmoud Abbas's promise and
futile attempts to prevent it. The rampage by colonial settlers started
with the arson attack on the Dawabsheh family home several weeks ago
(mother, father and child martyred, second child still in hospital).
Reactions were expected and the settlers are now getting green light to
massacre Palestinians and attack their holy sites. The arrogance of
Netanyahu unleashing his settlers on AlAqsa mosque and then staring down
the United Nations and lecturing them about Iran was like a Greek myth:
tragic and theatrical. This theater of the absurd would be comical if it
was not so devastating. The silence of the US validates the widespread
belief here that this theater is intended to hide a deal struck between
Netanyahu and Obama whereby the US will let Israel proceed with its plans
to Judaize Jerusalem and annex other areas of occupied territories. All
politicians played their assigned role and Mahmoud Abbas continued...

Volunteers Excel

Our volunteer chapters excelled last month, hosting five candidates debates on Vancouver Island and in Metro Vancouver, in partnership with the Dogwood Initiative. The debates focussed on green jobs, renewable energy, intergenerational equity, the Enbridge and Kinder Morgan pipeline proposals, the National Energy Board and Canada's share of greenhouse gas emissions, and aimed to raise awareness and understanding of sustainable energy issues and the candidates’ positions in the lead up to the federal election. The debate series has already reached hundreds of voters, with two debates remaining in Sidney and North Vancouver.

Staff and volunteers also reached out to hundreds of students...

Seniors

NationBuilder r1 Election_LOGO_with_date_FINAL.jpgPaov --

This year I heard from a home support worker who visits a senior woman living alone in her home. She told me that above anything else, this senior just needs someone to sit and hold her hand because she is lonely and isn’t sure she wants to keep on living.

The home support worker said she can barely stand to go to the woman’s house because under the strictly limited care plan and very short time she’s allowed to spend with the woman, she can’t - in fact, she’s not allowed - to sit down and listen, even for five minutes. So the worker comes, does a few short tasks, and leaves the woman to sit alone and isolated.

Our report (http://www.bchealthcoalition.ca/seniors) this year found that this is a tragically common scenario - in...

How can mushrooms save the world - and how can you grow your own edible and medicinal mushrooms? Last week we had the honor of seeing Paul Stamets, world-renowned mycologist, speak in Asheville. Paul has been doing groundbreaking work on how fungi, particularly mushrooms, offer uniquely powerful, practical solutions we can implement now to boost the biosphere’s immune system and equip us with benign breakthrough mycotechnologies to accelerate the transition to a restored world. Watch this video where Paul shares the ways that mushrooms are helping humans create resilience.
