In the early nineteenth century, Cuba is a Spanish colony and a slave society in which labour has been kidnapped in African lands and sold like cattle to the Spanish and Creole landowners. The ideals of emancipation, enlightenment and the French and American revolutions have also reached the Caribbean. In the midst of this environment of inconsistencies, enigmas, dreams and endless tragedies, Ursula, a freed slave woman from Haiti, and Cornelio, a German merchant, star in a love story that created the hope of living in a better...

NATURAL HISTORY NIGHT
Awash with Opportunity: Putting “Sustainable” in B.C.’s
New Water Laws
British Columbia has an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to significantly improve its water law regime. Escalating issues such as droughts, floods, ecosystem degradation, and conflicts over water use underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive change to water management and the supporting legal structure. In B.C., recent efforts to modernize water laws to better respond to present-day realities resulted in the new Water Sustainability Act (WSA). The WSA was passed in 2014 and will come into effect through supporting regulations in 2016-2017. This presentation by Oliver Brandes and Rosie Simms (POLIS Water Sustainability Project) will explore some of the necessary elements of effective modern water law, focusing on B.C.’s ongoing effort to implement the WSA and improve water governance. Drawing on recent research...

Fracking Up Our Coast - LNG Discussion In Shawnigan Lake - Dec. 9th, 7:00pm

Dear Friends of SJS,

Steelhead LNG has recently been heavily promoting their proposed Malahat LNG project, which would process 900 million cubic feet of fracked natural gas per day and store it in a massive floating offshore facility at Bamberton. This project would also involve a pipeline and LNG tankers through the Saanich Inlet.

Join us Wednesday, December 9 @ 7:30 in the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre for a free panel discussion and town hall meeting to hear some alternate points of view. Speakers will discuss the overall need to divest from fossil fuel projects, specific concerns regarding this LNG project, and alternatives for the future.

Warmly,

Laurel

Hey all you jammers out there,

In Issue #123, the final chapter of the Manifesto for World Revolution series, we delve deep into the idea of aesthetic terror, a visual attack on the mood, the tone and the feel of everyday life. Can aesthetic shock provoke a moment of confusion, of angst, of existential crisis? Can it provoke a global tone shift that just might change up the direction of the deadly road we're headed down?

Help the Canadian Youth Delegation get a meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau

17 of the Canadian Youth Delegation just arrived in Paris for the COP 21 United Nations climate negotiations. The negotiations began tonight, and we are feeling apprehensive but hopeful.

Our Prime Minister promised us real change, not climate change -- and we’re ready to hold him to it. During his short time in Paris, we call on Justin Trudeau, our Minister of Youth, to take the time to meet with us and hear our concerns.

We need your help to make this meeting happen.

Billion People March: A Call For Action

Hey all you dreamers and redeemers out there,

As COP21 kicked off last Saturday, hundreds of thousands of people around the world took to the streets.
