Wednesday Vigil Every Week at Legislature

https://www.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=2829436537308016&id=100007250921309&sfnsn=mo

Logan’s pants were torn apart by the RCMP as they extracted her from a lockdown at Fairy Creek this week. We cheered her loudly at our weekly Old Growth Vigil at the BC Legislature today, along with Elder Rose Henry, both fresh from the front line. Tasha of Urban Actions for Ancient Forests invited us all to bring rocks to honour the 267 arrested forest defenders (now 280+). As we placed our rocks around a towering tree at the Leg, a chainsaw broke the peace, symbol of the madness underway in one of BC’s last ancient forests. When will this so-called “democratic” government listen to its citizens?Join us every Wednesday at the BC Leg, 4:00-5:30 PM. A similar vigil takes place every Saturday at 12 noon in Sooke outside the Edward Milne high school. Rolling Justice Bus leads banner waves over the Pat Bay highway at Rogers Rd. overpass every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:30 am. Other actions planned for next week. Stay tuned!image.png

As you read this, some of the last old growth trees in British Columbia are falling.

In spite of the unprecedented public pressure that’s been building internationally, the B.C. government is still stalling on its promise to protect at-risk old growth forests across the province.

So we figured it was time to step things up. We teamed up with Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, David Suzuki, Mark Ruffalo and a long list of scientists, celebrities and Indigenous leaders to produce a new video that’s going viral online.

The video makes it clear that urgent action is needed from the B.C. government. Not in 3 years. Not in 3 months. Today. Right now.

It’s a powerful video – and we have an ambitious goal to make sure everyone across North America sees it. Including the B.C. Premier, the Minister for Forests, and all decision-makers across the province. Will you help it travel far and wide by watching and sharing it on Facebook right now?

Cambie appeal roundup

NationBuilder r1

Paov --

Last week (June 14-18, 2021), we listened to the BC Court of Appeal’s hearing for the Cambie case. This case is far from over, however, and there’s still time for you to sign the pledge to show your support for public health care.

Here’s a brief overview of some of the arguments presented at last week’s hearing:

  • Counsel for the attorneys general of Canada (AG-C) and BC (AG-BC) both argued that equity is a key objective of both the Canada Health Act and the BC Medicare Protection Act (MPA). They also outlined why data on wait times cannot be viewed as black and white, that there are many factors that go into the length of a patient’s wait time (including decisions made by patients and their physicians), and that the appellants have failed to identify how the MPA actually causes those extended wait times.
  • Our counsel supported both the AG-C and AG-BC in...

[evoz] Cafe on Youtube

Dear CASC,

The Café Simpatico Zoom that we organized on “HONDURAS and the CANADA CONNECTION” is now available on YouTube.

The link is:

Our Café featured Phil Little, a knowledgeable and experienced activist who has been many times to Honduras; Dr. Janet spring who organized a successful community campaign in Ontario to free Honduran political prisoners and Aixa, a Honduran human rights advocate, living in Europe. All excellent speakers and well worth hearing.

The May Café on Coffee and climate change with Nedjo Rogers will also be on YouTube soon.

In solidarity, Terry Wolfwood

Working together to help Boundary Bay

r1Dear Paov,

In Boundary Bay, on the south coast of BC, the effects of climate change will be significant.

Rising sea levels and increasing wave and storm intensity will affect shorelines, putting communities, infrastructure and rich intertidal ecosystems at risk.

The exciting news is that solutions to help our communities and ecosystems be resilient to climate change can be found in nature itself.

And you can help us continue this important work with your gift today.

As a West Coast staff lawyer specializing in green and sustainable communities, I am honoured to partner with researchers, NGOs, Indigenous nations, local communities and municipalities, on a unique pilot project called the Living Dike in Boundary Bay.

The Living Dike is an innovative, experimental and nature-based approach to protect communities in the region from sea level rise and coastal flooding. Instead of building bigger, much higher conventional dikes along the shoreline, the project is exploring how to work with nature. The idea is to enhance the salt marsh and very gradually raise its level, so it can adapt to sea level rise and at the same time absorb...

Day 28 of RCMP enforcement, 222 arrests and counting

We are honoured to do this work as guests on traditional territory of the Pacheedaht and Ditidaht First Nations. We work with utmost respect for the land and all its relations, human and nonhuman.
We're not standing down
Despite last week's announcement by the Province of British Columbia, which defers logging in key areas in Fairy Creek and the Central Walbran, the majority of what we've been defending is still on the chopping block. Because this announcement will convince many people that the fight is over, we need you now more than ever.

Urge Victoria City Council members to take action on scrubbers

Ban wastewater dumping‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

Hey PAOV,

Yesterday I had five minutes to present to the Victoria City Council about ocean dumping from exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) and I wanted to fill you in on how it went:

Victoria has made motions about scrubbers before and is definitely a council that cares about the ocean. It’s tricky to get into all the intricacies of scrubbers turning air pollution into acidic carcinogenic water pollution in the allotted five minutes you have to present to council but council members seemed receptive (especially after I shared the latest shocking report from ICCT on global discharges¹).

What we can do now is show them that this isn’t just a technical issue — real people who they are representing are deeply concerned.

Send an email to the Victory City Council and join me in calling on Victoria to pass a resolution demanding Transport Canada take action on dumping from vessels, including stopping the use of scrubbers.

SEND EMAIL

We’ve made it simple and drafted an email for you, but, adding a personal touch will show your City Council members that you’re serious about cleaning up ship dumping.

[Sjsall] History Department Reaches Out

Dear Friends of SJS,

Please consider providing whatever support you can to this request from John Lutz (History, UVic)

Regards, Margo

As you may know, the History Department and friends have been working to bring the neediest of refugee families to Canada, starting in 2015 when the Syrian crisis really hit headlines. Since then we have had the great privilege of welcoming the Tarrach family from Syria, Tedros’ family from Eritrea, and Alaa and his sister, brother-in-law, and nephew from Sudan. All three families are making a life for themselves and their children in Canada and the Tarrachs are already Canadian citizens.

While our new friends are safe in Canada, unfortunately their families are not, and they are very worried for their safety. So now we are beginning a new phase to bring the most urgent cases of their family members to Canada and we need your help.

We have committed to Alaa and his family to help bring his sister to Canada from her place of exile in Egypt. Like Alaa, she fled Sudan because...

Sign the pledge to support public health care!

NationBuilder r1

Paov --

Last week, we held a public webinar to mobilize our community around the appeal for the Cambie case, set to be heard on June 14th at the BC Court of Appeal. To continue building momentum, we have launched a pledge campaign to defend public healthcare.

Will you take a moment to sign and share the pledge to support public health care?

Paov, it remains as important as ever that we mobilize to keep wining on this case. Here's a reminder of the top 5 reasons why the victory last September was so important:

  • An expansion of private pay healthcare would not reduce waits in the public system. In fact it could make them worse.
  • Private pay healthcare undermines equitable access to care.
