Celebrate Fairy Creek Blockade 1st anniversary Monday Aug 9

Celebrate Fairy Creek Blockade 1 year anniversary ~ Monday Aug 9 ~ Day of Action ~ 2 - 10:30 pm

Exactly 1 year ago on August 9th, a group of concerned citizens got together to protect Old Growth Forest about to be logged in the Fairy Creek Watershed. They started an active Blockade - to stop destructive clear-cut logging practices of ancient forests, which destroys the ancient biomass & habitat, and sadly contributes to climate change.

To be clear, this movement is against logging old growth ancient trees. As Dr Suzanne Simard, UBC Forestry Professor has demonstrated in her research, the old "mother trees" actively nurture the younger trees in the forest -- they share nutrition and water, and help protect the younger trees from insect/fungal invasion.

The science research is undeniably clear -- these ancient mother trees are "worth more standing" as Premier John Horgan said himself in October 2020. Sadly, Premier Horgan and his caucus don't believe there are any short term solutions to these complex problems. We believe there are.

Monday's Voices from the Ancestral Frontlines activities include powerful Indigenous ceremonies, speeches, song & dance!

Note: Dr Suzanne Simard and Elizabeth May are both scheduled to speak Monday evening as per the Schedule of Events (below), and are now speaking between 5 - 6 pm, to allow for their busy travel schedules.

Standing strong for what's left

\ We are honoured to do this work as guests on traditional territory of the Pacheedaht and Ditidaht First Nations. We work with utmost respect for the land and all its relations, human and nonhuman.

Please help us by forwarding this newsletter to any friends or family you feel would like to be involved or learn more. They can join our list here.
Be a part of the last stand
As British Columbia declared a state of emergency last week, with wildfires raging across the province, the remaining 2.7% of old growth forest in BC continues to be logged at breakneck speed. Over 150,000 Ha of ancient forest are clear-cut every year, including areas affected by our blockades (Granite Creek, Bugaboo Creek, Eden South, Upper Caycuse, Edinburgh Mountain and Camper Creek). At this rate, nearly all remaining old growth will be lost over the next decade.
We've been pulling off something unprecedented at Fairy Creek. Despite hundreds of RCMP set against us, we've stayed strong, even with low numbers over the past few weeks.

Please consider joining us on the frontlines.
Bring your friends, your family, and your kids - you'll meet people you'll never forget, and become part of a passionate community taking a real stand during a time of ecological crisis.
There are many roles at camp, many of which are non-arrestable. Join us at Fairy Creek HQ. From there, you can choose to join a satellite camp, or camp among the friendly community there (great place to bring kids). Come self-sufficient and ready to camp. THANK YOU - you are needed and we'll love you for showing up. Teal Jones contractors have resumed roadbuilding into Bugaboo ancient forest on Pacheedat Territory, which contains some of the highest densities of Western Red and Yellow Cedar outside of the Central Walbran. Yesterday, Teal Jones submitted cut block applications for three areas of valley bottom growth in the lower Caycuse. Upcoming Events

Cruises are officially restarting

Stand.earth

In case you’ve been living under a rock or, more likely, focused on the apocalyptic wildfires and record heat striking our country right now, I’ve got an update that you need to know: July 19, 2021 marked the first day of cruises scheduled to set sail from Seattle to southeast Alaska in a “post-pandemic” world.

Luckily, Transport Canada responded to this with thoughtful consideration about the environmental impacts of cruises restarting — not. Instead, Transport Canada announced that the Canadian coast will re-open to cruises on November 1, 2021. [1]

Meaning, Canada is just months away from re-opening our shores for cruises to dump poop straight into the Great Bear Sea.

As cruises restart and the federal election looms, this is a pivotal time to act. Add your name to our petition and urge the Canadian government to set restrictions on cruise wastewater dumping.

STOP DUMPING

Wastewater dumping poses a huge threat to our oceans, accelerating its acidification, contributing to toxic algae and dead zones, and weakening one of our best tools to combat the climate emergency.

UPDATE What's happening with national standards for long-term care?

If you found yourself outraged, devastated, and in grief at the loss of life in long-term care during the pandemic, you may be wondering what is happening with Prime Minister Trudeau’s promise to create national standards. The short answer is that the federal government’s actions to date are little more than superficial delay tactics.

A recent poll by Angus Reid confirms that a great majority is seeing through Trudeau’s empty promises, with three quarters of respondents saying they doubt any significant change will happen in the next five to ten years. Yet 58% of respondents support the federal government getting directly involved in long-term care, and 75% believe a major system overhaul is needed. 60% want to see private for-profit care phased out. Clearly, we want and need clear commitments to legislated and enforceable national standards that eliminate profit...

Updates from Camp

Updates from Camp and Direct Support for Lytton Fire Survivors

This summer has been rough. As communities across so called Canada and the world grapple with the direct evidence of genocide being shown in the media every day communities are also being subjected to climate disasters like the recent heatwave and the fire that tragically burned down the town of Lytton.

Resistance to the Coastal Gas Link pipeline continues on the territory and the Unist'ot'en healing lodge is fulfilling its mission of serving the Wet'suwet'en community. Across turtle island people are showing up in resistance and care tearing down the statues of racist colonizers, asserting sovereignty over Indigenous territory, and doing mutual aid and healing work to support each other through these crises.

If you're in a position to donate to support displaced Nlaka'pumux families who were impacted by the devastating Lytton fire please do so today. Details below.
