We need huge numbers now

We are honoured to do this work as guests on traditional territory of the Pacheedaht and Ditidaht First Nations. We work with utmost respect for the land and all its relations, human and nonhuman. Logging begins near River Camp tomorrow; we need huge numbers on site now Images of the Caycuse cutblocks from last week from @arvinoutside. The past weeks have brought a massive and aggressive RCMP effort at the frontlines. We've just lost our last camps up the mountain, including River Camp, Heli Camp, and Land Back, and Aurora's Alley has been bulldozed. Cutblocks have been marked and logging trucks are on site, ready to begin clearcutting now that fire risk is diminished.

[bc-can] TMX Tree-sitter Timothy in danger right now, in Burnaby

Hi there,Timothée Govare, who has been sitting up in a tree in Burnaby for months, blocking the route of the TMX pipeline construction, just called me to say that they are cutting trees with chainsaws right next to him, putting him in danger.
He needs more support on the ground, at the intersection of North Road and Highway #1, in Burnaby.

Holding Canadian Mining Companies Accountable

for Human Rights Violations

Friday, September 24, 2021 at 07:00 PM Pacific Time

Join Zoom Meeting by clicking here

Meeting ID: 870 7832 4527 Passcode: 50021

Matt Eisenbrandt is the Victoria-based Director of Transnational Investigations for CFM Lawyers, a class action law firm that has brought some of Canada’s most important lawsuits on behalf of victims against Canadian mining companies for alleged human rights abuses connected to their overseas operations.

Matt will talk about two of these cases:

CFM represented four Guatemalans who were shot by mine security personnel while protesting the presence of Tahoe Resources’ silver mine, now owned by Vancouver-based Pan American Silver.

CFM represented a group of Eritrean refugees who alleged they were forced labourers at the Bisha gold and copper mine in Eritrea, then owned by Nevsun Resources, also based in Vancouver.

Matt will discuss the process of putting these cases together, challenges in litigating them, and some lessons learned from the experiences.

Fairy Creek

Content warning: this email includes details of police violence ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌
Stand.earth

Since August 9th, Indigenous land defenders and their allies at Ada’itsx/Fairy Creek have been facing an escalation in police violence as they continue to peacefully protect some of the last standing old growth in B.C.

Over the past several weeks, videos, photos and verbal reports of this violence and illegal enforcement tactics of the Teal Jones’ injunction have been brought to the public’s attention, yet the B.C. NDP continues to remain silent. This is not only unacceptable, it is abhorrent.

Those who have been on the frontlines for over a year need fellow B.C. residents to show their solidarity and speak up against this violence. The number of complaints that have already flooded the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CRCC) for the RCMP are making headlines [1], but the violence is continuing. We need to keep up the pressure to demand the RCMP stand down.

Will you take five minutes to call Premier Horgan and Minister of Safety Mike Farnworth to make a formal complaint about the police violence at Ada’itsx/Fairy Creek?

CALL NOW

People's safety – especially that of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) who have been repeatedly targeted on the frontlines by the RCMP – is being jeopardized to protect corporate profit. As our society continues to reckon with the genocide of Indigenous peoples and overpolicing of BIPOC on stolen land, we are reminded that colonial violence is ongoing and that we must do better to keep everyone safe. That includes holding elected politicians accountable, because their inaction has led to this conflict.

Quote about the connection between Fairy Creek and police violence as ongoing colonialism.

State of BC Health Election 2021

Your election update edition from the BC Health Coalition

UPDATE Ask Your Candidate

Will you get candidates on the record to demand action on health care?

September 20 is Election Day in Canada with advance polling starting on September 10.

As we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the importance of universal health care as a public good for all regardless of income, age, immigration status, or where we live. Unfortunately, our public health care system does not meet everyone's needs. This is the result of years of underfunding and attack from private interests. We need a federal government who will commit to improving and defending the public health care system we all rely on.

OPEN LETTER TO PREMIER JOHN HORGAN...

OPEN LETTER TO PREMIER JOHN HORGAN, SOLICITOR GENERAL MIKE FARNWORTH, ATTORNEY GENERAL DAVID EBY, ENVIRONMENT MINISTER GEORGE HEYMAN, INDIGENOUS RELATIONS MINISTER MURRAY RANKIN, TOM AND DICK JONES OF TEAL JONES GROUP AND DEPUTY COMMISSIONER DWAYNE MCDONALD OF THE RCMP

So this is how you want Fairy Creek to go down? With RCMP smashing car windows, conducting illegal searches, stealing personal possessions and giving them to Teal Jones, threatening and inflicting harm on peaceful protesters, defying court orders that declare the illegality of exclusion zones, attempting to fetter the press, targeting Indigenous and people of colour with long-standing deep-seated and systemic racism? This is the best you can do in dealing with peaceful protesters in a civil society, and who have every right to practice civil disobedience?

This is how you want to be forever remembered? Make no mistake, your names will be etched into the annals of history as those representatives of state, corporations and law enforcement who cared more for protecting the financial interests of big business than the interests of the people. Was this a good use of the millions of taxpayer dollars spent on the RCMP tactical squad? It’s a safe bet the...

[bc-can] Canada: Lets elect courageous clima

Dear WE-CAN Members and supporters,
This morning David Suzuki emailed me in climate distress, writing:
"Seems all environmental groups are desperately trying to raise the climate issue. Just wondered what you are doing with your WE-CAN Network. They must represent quite a chunk of the population and we have to marshall that pressure. The bloody media act as if climate is just an environmental issue that comes after Afghanistan, Covid and daycare. Any ideas? David.”
Leadnow seems to have the answer to David’s question
So I’m breaking our rule of “just one email per week” to share Leadnow's urgent call-out for people to make phone-calls in key ridings. The CBC Poll-Tracker shows the Conservatives not inching but romping into the lead. https://newsinteractives.cbc.ca/elections/poll-tracker/canada/
Here’s Kate Hodgson’s Leadnow email:

I’m blown away. Last week, the Leadnow community made 31,984 calls into key ridings — to reach key voters who could tilt the scales to elect bold champions this election.

It’s an inspiring number, but the polls are tightening and the election outcome is looking increasingly uncertain. [1] If we’re going to elect the courageous leaders we deserve in this crucial election, we need to ramp up our campaign now — and we need your help!

We’ve done the math. We need to make 32,837 calls this week to have impact in key ridings across the country. Together we can reach thousands of key voters in winnable ridings, and convince them to show up to vote for candidates who will tackle climate and inequality side by side.

But for our plan to work, we need everyone reading this email to pitch in two hours to make calls this week. Will you sign up for an online calling party now? We’ll provide you with all the training you need — all from the comfort of your home!

Mon, Aug 30 at 6pm EST
Mon, Aug 30 at 5:30pm PST
Wed, Sept 1 at 6pm EST
Wed, Sept 1 at 5:30pm PST
Fri, Sept 3 at 6pm EST
Fri, Sept 3 at 5:30pm PST
Sat, Sept 4 at 12pm Pacific Time / 3pm Eastern Time
Sun, Sept 5 at 6pm EST

Three weeks from today, voters will head to the polls. After months of scorching heat and wildfires, and a pandemic where billionaires increased their wealth by $78 billion, we know climate and inequality are on the ballot. [2-5]

If enough of us sign up to make calls , we’ll be able to make at least 90,000 calls before election day. You could elect leaders who will acknowledge the scale of the problems we are facing, and respond with emergency-level action.

Don’t worry if you haven’t made calls before — we’ll show you the ropes. First timers are welcome! You don’t even have to leave your couch! Sign up here.
