Ask your candidate for commitments to public health care

NationBuilder r1

Dear Paov,

October 24th is Election Day in British Columbia. By now, we are in the middle of this short provincial election campaign season!

This election is unlike any other previous election, coming in the middle of a pandemic, which is why it is so important for us to advocate for public health care in BC. If we don’t elect a provincial government dedicated to strengthening public health care, we could see many more seniors suffering in long term care facilities while the government cuts back on their commitments to community-based health care in this province.

But, if enough of us hold the candidates in this election accountable by asking for their commitments to seniors' care, Community Health Centres, and public solutions to improve our health care system, we can ensure that a future provincial government will protect and strengthen public health care.

To help voters decide which candidate to support, the BCHC has developed an election campaign that focuses on three priority health care issues: advocating for Community Health Centres, improving Seniors' Care, and pushing for...

I have big news to share with you

It feels surreal to write this. I’m honestly a bit shocked and pleasantly amazed that our organization has reached the point where it is today and I’m thrilled to see what comes from today’s announcement.

Four and a half years ago a group of co-workers and I launched Iron & Earth with a press conference in Edmonton. I still remember how nervous and excited I was that morning.

At the time, our public goal was to train 1000 electricians into solar energy. Since then, our vision, mission and initiatives have evolved significantly thanks to the contributions of so many of you: passionate and wonderful people that have supported the organization to grow since that day.

Today marks another big milestone in our organization's history.

Our last big old-growth trees

Sign the petition to put pressure on the politicians who can save these trees. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

While British Columbia's government says that “old forests” still fill out the province's landscape, less than 1% of BC forests still have big, old-growth trees. The majority of BC's old-growth forests are still open to logging, and don’t recover once they're chopped down.

The good news is, right now there’s a critical opportunity to pressure decision makers where it matters – in some of the last old-growth ecosystems on the planet.

With the BC election quickly approaching, we need concerned people across the country to add their names to the petition asking the next government to immediately ban logging in the most at-risk old-growth forests.

Sign the petition to pressure politicians to take action and protect these irreplaceable old-growth forests from logging.

A recent government announcement claimed that a large swath of BC forests are being deferred from logging. This sounds nice on paper, but in reality, these deferrals encompassed second-growth and areas already off limits to logging – only a tiny fraction of at risk old-growth...

A rare chance to hear directly from Wet'suwet'en leaders & community members about fracked gas impacts and Indigenous resistance

RAVEN-Trust

We are thrilled to be inviting you to hear first-hand about the recent - and ongoing - legal challenges of Wet'suwet'en hereditary leaders.

The case, heard in B.C.Supreme Court last week and continuing October 16th, has brought forward the Wet'suwet'en concern that the project's impact on Indigenous Women and Girls has not been properly assessed. The court also heard the full account of Coastal GasLink's numerous and ongoing permit violations.

Join us for a webinar where we'll unpack the evidence and arguments, and hear Wet'suwet'en community members share visions for their unceded territory that honours and sustains salmon habitat, mighty forests, and a safe climate for future generations.

It takes huge courage to stand up to powerful interests and take to the courts to pursue what's right. We can't wait to gather with you and share our appreciation for Wet'suwet'en leaders, by delivering messages of support and over 4,000 pledge signatures live on a webinar TOMORROW.

Join Na'moks, Kalaset and Charlotte Euverman of Wet'suwet'en Nation, who will speak together with RAVEN's Ana Simeon and legal counsel DJ Larkin.

Looking forward to seeing you at 5 pm PDT, Wednesday, October 7th!

Refusing to allow their territory to be defiled, Wet'suwet'en leaders push back in court

RAVEN-Trust

Individually, we’re one drop. Together? We’re a mighty river.

We’ve been waiting a long time for Wet’suwet’en’s case to be heard by the BC Supreme Court. Today, hereditary chiefs who aim to stop Coastal GasLink from encroaching on their territory will be in court for the second - and final - day of their Judicial Review hearing. These visionary stewards of land and water are refusing to allow their territory to be defiled by a company that has consistently failed to live up to environmental and human rights standards.

Under normal circumstances, we would invite you to gather together and rally on the courthouse steps. Instead, we reached out to you using the online tools we now rely on to keep our movement - and the RAVEN community - connected.

And: wow!! You responded with a roar. Your overwhelming support for Wet’suwet’en Nation this week has proven that we don’t need to physically connect to make a massive impact. We are over 1/3 of the way to our $50k goal - if just 130 people donate $25, we can deliver solid support to fund the Wet’suwet’en’s historic case, defending land, air and water from fracked gas development.

If you have already given - please accept our profound thanks. Didn’t have a chance to donate? Give now: click here to contribute to the legal defence fund.

Now’s our chance to stand up to CGL's fracked gas pipeline. Stand behind Wet’suwet’en leaders: donate to the RAVEN legal defence fund.

RAVEN-Trust

Wet’suwet’en are in court TODAY, defending land, air and water from Coastal GasLink’s (CGL) liquefied natural gas (LNG) pipeline.

As the project slowly snakes its way across northern British Columbia, Coastal Gas Link has been caught in multiple acts of environmental destruction.

In response, all clans of the Wet’suwet’en, acting in unity, launched a Judicial Review of the Coastal GasLink project. At issue are numerous ongoing permit violations by the company, along with a failure by the BC Environmental Assessment Office to implement recommendations of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women and Girls.

Despite an eviction by Wet’suwet’en leadership — whose jurisdiction in their territory was confirmedin the landmark Delgamuukw case — the company has pressed on in building a fracked gas pipeline that would contribute to climate catastrophe. From failure to protect endangered species to blocking Indigenous people from accessing their traplines, CGL’s violations are in clear contravention of BC’s environmental regulations as well as the company’s own policies.

It’s profoundly unjust. Why should Indigenous Peoples have to use their limited resources to hold governments and companies accountable?

September 2020 Update

September @ SOVI

Image: Life Matters from Pexels There’s a lot going on. It’s overwhelming. And it’s inspiring. As we dash through our days where so many previous non-decisions are now a constant weighing of risk and priority, and previous life choices have simply been taken away, we ask, what do we do now?

Our sector is grappling with ongoing shifts in funding priorities, a sudden inability to travel overseas, shrunken budgets from fundraising shortfalls, job loss, and general weariness from everyone - including ourselves - stemming from apocalypse fatigue (to borrow the term from climate change, and extend the concept to our current pandemic and fight for racial justice.)

Sometimes, we just need a cozy blanket and a long novel. Or maybe your self-care is a hike in the forested hills of the South Island, or a paddle in the Salish Sea at sunrise: taking the time to take care for ourselves as we grapple with the world as we now find it is essential - because we have work to do.

Media Release: City Councillors call for Victoria to Keep Growing

City Councillors call for Victoria to Keep Growing

September 28, 2020

Victoria, BC, Lekwungen Territory—Building on the success of the innovative municipal program Get Growing, Victoria – which saw 81,000 vegetable starts grown in municipal greenhouses and distributed to residents since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic – Victoria City Councillors Ben Isitt and Jeremy Loveday are calling on the city to make the program permanent.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has demonstrated gaps in our local food system and in our social and economic fabric,” says Isitt, who originally proposed the program with Loveday in a report to City Council weeks into the Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. “Get Growing, Victoria has been a big success, supporting community members in building a more resilient local food system.”

Since City Council approved the proposal in March, City of Victoria staff worked with stakeholders in the Urban Food Table to identify species appropriate for planting, procured seed from local suppliers, grew 81,000 vegetable starts in municipal greenhouses at Beacon Hill Park, and distributed the plants to residents in partnership with 42 community organizations. The City also provided gardening materials like mulch to residents and helped develop educational resources on food gardening with community partners.

“Food security isn’t just an issue we should care about during a pandemic,” says Loveday, who with Isitt is proposing that the program be made permanent in a report being considered by City Council on October 1st. “Municipalities can play an important role in ensuring people have access to everything they need to begin to grow their own food.”
