Sunday July 26th Friends of Cuba Event

Friends and Supporters,

The time has come once again for our annual July 26th event. Every year in the last 26th years we’ve been celebrating and commemorating one of the greatest revolutions that ever took place in the Americas in our community. This year the celebration is needed more than ever since Cuba, the only country on the globe, that has been able to send its doctors to 30 countries to save lives combatting the COVID pandemic. Under a cruel and genocidal blockade that the US keeps constantly tightening against a poor country like Cuba, this achievement is remarkable.
In a world where military expenditures are taken more seriously than saving lives, and where selfishness and consumption thrive, the solidarity and friendship that Cuba shares with humanity is truly astonishing.
This event will be a fundraiser to purchase catheters for Cuban children and surgical gloves requested by Cuban hospitals. This is the least we can do to show our solidarity with Cuba.
This event will be in open air at the Esquimalt Gorge Park. Masks are recommended. We are taking precautions to be safe.
We hope you, your family and friends can join us for this even, weather permitting.
If you are joining us please...

Title: Embodying Your Curriculum: An Introduction to the Fundamentals of Trauma-Informed Pedagogy

When: July 20, at 12:30-2 pm EST. Professors who are interested can register at this link:

https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Li7eXPiFQ8mpPrUR9L9iKQ

Description: This webinar introduces participants to our approach to using trauma-informed pedagogies, the neuroscience of mental health, and pedagogies of social justice and diversity to create connection and embodied presence in the online and in-person classroom, at a moment when higher education is called upon to face profound social problems that cannot be walled off from our classes and that produce anxiety, stress, and burnout among students, staff, and faculty. Created and facilitated by two women of color and the co-founders of Embodying Your Curriculum, an online program designed to teach professors the fundamentals of trauma-informed pedagogy, this session provides an overview of the paradigm of trauma informed pedagogy, explains why we need it now, and provides tools for beginning to incorporate this paradigm into your curriculum.

Presenters: Anita Chari (Ph.D, Associate Professor of Political Science, University of Oregon) and Angelica Singh...

New Report: The Place of Assisted Living in BC’s Seniors Care System

AssistedLivingCCPA.pngWe released a new report The Place of Assisted Living in BC’s Seniors Care System: Assessing the Promise, Reality and Challenges with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Hospital Employees’ Union.

”Working as an LPN in assisted living can be heartbreaking. We routinely encounter situations where residents are clearly suffering because they aren’t getting the level of care they need, but we are told not to interfere because they have the right to live at risk. This violates our Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice to provide safe and compassionate ethical care,” says Anita Dickson, President of the Licensed Practical Nurses Association of BC. [Sjsall] July 9th Join the Raging Grannies in Support of Senior's Care

Dear Friends of SJS

GRANNIES SAY NO MORE PUBLIC FUNDING OF FOR-PROFIT SENIOR CARE HOMES

On July 9th, 2020, the Victoria Raging Grannies will sing and comment on the sad state of extended care in BC and in Canada. This will take place in front of the Ministry of Health Offices at 1515 Blanshard Street at 11 am.

During the current Covid 19 pandemic, it has become very apparent that institutional safety, comfort and care for seniors is in crisis in Canada. As of June 1 st , deaths from Covid-19 at long-term care facilities totalled 6,007, or 82% of all

deaths in Canada.

Although there are many excellent residences, we have all read stories of care homes where overworked and underpaid workers simply did not show up, residents were left to fend for themselves, and people who had died were left in

their beds, while families were unaware of the situations and could not visit theirloved ones due to quarantine regulations.

As Senior citizens, the Victoria Raging Grannies are extremely concerned andwant to make sure that this issue remains in the public eye until all Seniors are comfortable, healthy and safe in their care homes.

Please...

New Report: The Place of Assisted Living in BCs

NationBuilder r1

Facebook_Assisted_Living_Shareable_-_with_logo.pngDear Paov --

On Wednesday, we released The Place of Assisted Living in BC’s Seniors Care System: Assessing the Promise, Reality and Challenges report with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Hospital Employees’ Union.

Assisted living was introduced in 2002 as a less institutional environment for seniors with less complex needs than long-term care. It offered the promise of greater independence and being able to live in a more home-like environment—which are important and highly valued by seniors. Drawing on interviews in different parts of the province with 28 care aides, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), front-line managers, residents and family members, the study offers a preliminary assessment of the quality and appropriateness of assisted living services, the conditions for both residents and workers, and the legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern assisted living.

[Sjsall] upcoming opportunities and causes

Dear Friends of SJS,

Today, June 17th, at 8 PM EST (5 PM PST) AAPF will host a special episode of Under The Blacklight titled “#SayHerName: Telling Stories of State Violence Public Silence.” Host Kimberlé Crenshaw will speak with family members of Tanisha Anderson, Sandra Bland, Michelle Cusseaux, Shelly Frey, Korryn Gaines, India Kager, and Kayla Moore.

Supporting the families of women whose lives were taken by police is a core tenet of AAPF’s #SayHerName campaign. Part of that support is uplifting the stories that have been silenced. Tomorrow night, the leaders of #SayHerName will not only tell their stories, they will speak to what could be different in this country; they’ll dig into the changes that could be made that would’ve prevented the killing of their daughters and sisters. We look forward to holding this space, and building out from it.
