New Report: The Place of Assisted Living in BCs

On Wednesday, we released The Place of Assisted Living in BC’s Seniors Care System: Assessing the Promise, Reality and Challenges report with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Hospital Employees’ Union.
Assisted living was introduced in 2002 as a less institutional environment for seniors with less complex needs than long-term care. It offered the promise of greater independence and being able to live in a more home-like environment—which are important and highly valued by seniors. Drawing on interviews in different parts of the province with 28 care aides, Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), front-line managers, residents and family members, the study offers a preliminary assessment of the quality and appropriateness of assisted living services, the conditions for both residents and workers, and the legislative and regulatory frameworks that govern assisted living.

Dear Friends of SJS,
Today, June 17th, at 8 PM EST (5 PM PST) AAPF will host a special episode of Under The Blacklight titled “#SayHerName: Telling Stories of State Violence Public Silence.” Host Kimberlé Crenshaw will speak with family members of Tanisha Anderson, Sandra Bland, Michelle Cusseaux, Shelly Frey, Korryn Gaines, India Kager, and Kayla Moore.
Supporting the families of women whose lives were taken by police is a core tenet of AAPF’s #SayHerName campaign. Part of that support is uplifting the stories that have been silenced. Tomorrow night, the leaders of #SayHerName will not only tell their stories, they will speak to what could be different in this country; they’ll dig into the changes that could be made that would’ve prevented the killing of their daughters and sisters. We look forward to holding this space, and building out from it.

Act now to strengthen public health care

Dear Paov --
Now is the time to let Health Minister Dix and the BC government know that we want public health care solutions. Earlier this month, the government announced plans to deal with the biggest surgical backlog in our history. It includes some commitments to bold public solutions, but also worrying plans to expand the use of for-profit surgical clinics.
By sending an email to Health Minister Dix, we can ask the government to continue to be bold and implement already proven public solutions that build the public capacity of our health care system at this critical time. Click HERE to send the email.
In the 3 years prior to the pandemic, BC's government made significant progress in reducing surgical wait times by increasing public surgical capacity and expanding the use of efficient best practices. These improvements helped reduce wait times for all British Columbians. However with the COVID Surgical Renewal Plan, public funding is now being redirected to private clinics in hopes of a quick, temporary fix to the surgical backlog. This funding would be better spent in continuing to expand and enhance public surgery resources to help...

Paov --
In March, we shared the government’s announcement that “if you are present in B.C. and would otherwise not be eligible for coverage under MSP, you will be provided provincially insured health care coverage for services related to, suspected, or confirmed cases of infection with COVID-19.”
While there were issues with slow implementation of the policies, thanks to mobilisation from community members, health care professionals, and BC Health Coalition members like yourself as well as our communication with the Minister’s Office, we are now confident that people who have accessed these services will not have to fear debt or financial hardship regardless of when or where they accessed these services.
If you are or know an individual who has outstanding...
