Content warning: death of a child

PAOV — In mid-June, an 11-year-old autistic boy named Draven went missing after wandering away from his home in Lindsay, ON. An Amber Alert couldn’t be sent out for Draven, because he hadn’t been abducted. Tragically, his body was found a day later. Municipalities like Brighton, ON have now come forward calling on the province to create a new alert system for when vulnerable children go missing. Join petition starter Kat and over 75,000 supporters calling for this new alert to be created to stop future tragedies from happening.

Due Process for All. Except Youth.

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

Imagine. You are a youth in the criminal justice system. You were found guilty of a crime. You think your trial was unfair, and you want to appeal your case to the Supreme Court of Canada. However, the Court has decided not to hear your case.

While adults have an automatic right to appeal to the Supreme Court in many criminal cases, you must get the Court’s permission in order to even have your appeal heard. All because of your age.

This is the reality for young people in the criminal justice system. The Youth Criminal Justice Act denies young people the automatic right to appeal their case to the Supreme Court of Canada.

I wrote about how the Youth Criminal Justice Act leaves young people uniquely vulnerable in our latest blog.

If a young person wants the highest court in the country to review a finding of guilt, section 37(10) of the Youth Criminal Justice Act says they must first...

Dogwood News This Week: looking for help

Email Template r1 Dogwood Your place for news and action This week organizers from the BC Climate Emergency Campaign visited public housing buildings that were hit hard by last year’s deadly heat wave.

Residents described being trapped in their rooms with no air conditioning as the sun turned their concrete apartment towers into ovens. In two buildings in Surrey and New Westminster, some of their neighbours died.

It’s the same story we’ve been hearing across B.C. — elderly, isolated, vulnerable people, many...

Roe v Wade overturned

BREAKING
Content warning: abortion
PAOV — Today, the United States Supreme Court handed down their decision overturning Roe v. Wade. The decision is devastating for over 30 million people who have lost access to safe abortion. While abortion was decriminalized in Canada in 1988, access to a safe abortion is not guaranteed or a constitutionally protected right. Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada are calling on the federal government to honour their election promises to protect abortion access across the country. Show your support in this critical moment by signing the petition now.

BREAKING: Join todays live conversation on abortion after Roe

How did we get here? Where does the reproductive rights movement go next? What can be done right now to minimize the impact of this decision on the most vulnerable people?

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is a disaster for reproductive rights in America –– but the fight is far from over.

Now that Roe has fallen, 22 states, including nearly every state in the South, are expected to swiftly outlaw abortion.

How did we get here? Where does the reproductive rights movement go next? What can be done right now to minimize the impact of this decision on the most vulnerable people?

The Intercept has long covered the barrage of attacks against abortion rights, but the end of Roe is a game-changer, and those committed to reproductive autonomy will likely need to reassess their tactics.

The Trans Mountain Pipeline is sinking us

Take action on June 29th in your community to End Climate Delay r1

Paov,

Yesterday, we got some big news out of Ottawa. The Parliamentary Budget Officer confirmed, yet again, what we’ve known for a long time – the Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMX) is losing us billions of public dollars during a climate emergency.1

Of course, this isn’t a surprise. For years, Justin Trudeau and his cabinet have sworn that TMX would pay for the transition off fossil fuels. But this report confirms what Indigenous nations, environmentalists, and economists have been saying for nearly a decade: spending a single cent on TMX spells disaster for the economy and the environment.

At a time like this, neither people nor the planet can afford this kind of climate delay.

That’s why, on June 29th, we’re taking action. Find a local action near you using our event directory.

Don't see an action near you? It isn't too late to raise your hand to host one! We will provide you with organizing resources, art stencils, and 1:1 host support to make your action impactful.

Government disability benefits

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Have you had a pay raise in the last 27 years? People receiving Ontario Disability Support Payments (ODSP) can receive a maximum of $1,200 a month - an amount that hasn’t increased in nearly 30 years. With the cost of food, rent, and gas rising astronomically, living on so little is virtually impossible. Petition starter Serene is urging the provincial government to take immediate action to better support people who rely on Ontario’s disability support payments to survive. If you agree with Serene and think the government must increase disability support payments, sign the petition now.

Reconciliation at the end of a gun

Email Template r1 PAOV,

A rotating squad of heavily armed RCMP officers has patrolled Highway 16 since November, guarding a pipeline for Royal Dutch Shell and Malaysia’s state-owned oil company Petronas.

Encouraged by their success, Enbridge and TC Energy are working to revive plans for two more fracked gas pipelines across Northern B.C. But the lands they want to cross don’t belong to the corporations, or the Crown.

Testing military weapons in Nova Scotia?

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — The Department of National Defence (DND) plans to build a weapons testing facility in Hartlen Point, Nova Scotia, just outside of Halifax, cutting off access to shoreline trails and the best birding location in the province, while also putting a thriving marine ecosystem at risk. A request for public input was only announced on the Government of Canada website, so people who use the area to hike, surf, and birdwatch had almost no opportunity to have their concerns heard. Now, concerned residents are urging the DND to consider a different site for the new facility, to protect both the ecosystem and access to Hartlen Point. If you agree, sign the petition now.

BC agriculture at risk?

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — A crucial parcel of farmland in Surrey is at risk of being sold and developed into industrial parks, putting the province’s access to BC-grown vegetables in jeopardy. The 300-acre site produces 30-50 million servings of vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and cabbage every year. It’s owned by the federal government, and not protected by BC’s Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). At a time when food insecurity is increasing for many people in BC, petition starter Tristin is urging the federal government to lease the land to local farmers and include it in the ALR. You can show your support in this critical moment by signing the petition now.
