Misak leader Pedro Josse Velasco Tumina holding a sign at a protest outside Smurfit Kappa's annual shareholder meeting in Dublin

A,

Last month, Colombian Indigenous leader Pedro Josse Velasco Tumiña traveled to Ireland to challenge the paper giant decimating his ancestral lands. Now he’s in grave danger.

Over 78 human rights defenders have been killed in Pedro’s region of Colombia in just two years – many murdered by paramilitary troops allegedly working for land-grabbing corporations. To speak out is to put your life at risk

Pedro is about to launch a huge advocacy push, to demand action to protect the Misak people’s rainforest home. But now that his name and face are known he urgently needs protection.

Can you chip in the cost of a coffee so that we can provide Pedro with security and keep him safe as he fights for the rainforest? Anything extra we raise will help fund campaigns to keep indigenous activists safe everywhere.

Dogwood News This Week: dirty money

Email Template r1 Dogwood Your place for news and action In a not-so-distant past, bribery in B.C. politics was legal.

Any corporation or wealthy donor anywhere in the world could donate unlimited money to politicians in this province at both the municipal and provincial level.

This power over our democracy diluted the power of individual voters, eroded public confidence in decision-making and ensured special treatment for some of the worst corporate actors in B.C. including the company responsible for the Mount Polley...

Fighting for your Rights in Response to the Report of the Cullen Commission

This is a test r1

Dear Friend,

From February 2020 to October 2022, the BCCLA was the only civil liberties association to participate in the Cullen Commission of Inquiry into Money Laundering in British Columbia. We advocated for human rights, privacy protections, and due process for people in BC. Last week, the Final Report of the Cullen Commission was released.

Read the latest BCCLA Reacts to the Final Report of the Cullen Commission.

We are disappointed by this report, which calls for sweeping changes to tackle money laundering in the province, including the introduction of unexplained wealth orders, the aggressive pursuit of civil forfeiture, increased policing, and broad information collection and sharing.

Throughout the hearings, we spoke out against taking a tough-on-crime approach to money laundering. These invasive measures undermine constitutional rights. They have not been adequately tested and would be expensive to implement. Instead, we advocated for addressing the root causes of money laundering, including our failed model of drug prohibition.

We are extremely troubled that the Cullen Commission’s Final Report encourages...

The FBI tried to ambush and arrest my source

I’ve been personally threatened with jail time for refusing to reveal my confidential sources under Democratic administrations as well as Republican.

My name is Jim Risen, and I’m the senior national security correspondent at The Intercept.

I’ve spent my career reporting on the U.S. national security state and uncovering some of their dirtiest secrets and lies. In that time, I’ve been targeted by the FBI. I’ve been spied on. I’ve even been threatened with jail time for refusing to reveal my confidential sources.

And all of that happened under Democratic administrations, not just Republicans.

In fact, I’ve recently uncovered new information about a 2014 FBI scheme — signed off by the Obama Justice Department — to arrest one of my sources by using an informant to ambush one of my meetings. (More on that below.)

When Donald Trump left office, some people expected the...

Sockeye Salmon

The world’s largest sockeye salmon run is at risk from a massive open-pit copper mine proposal.

The US Environmental Protect Agency has proposed a plan to stop the Pebble Mine, and protect the salmon!.

Take action now to ensure the mine will be killed once and for all.

A,

The Pebble Mine is a massive open-pit copper and gold mining project that threatens the largest sockeye salmon run in the world, in Bristol Bay, Alaska. The Bristol Bay salmon fishery helps to feed the world, with an abundant, healthy sustainable source of wild seafood, and home to 15,000 much needed jobs for Alaskans.

But we could be on the brink of stopping this harmful mine once and for all. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who has the power to reject the mine, has proposed a plan to do just that. They have asked for public comments -- but the period ends in...

Join a Day of Action to End Climate Delay on June 29th r1

Paov,

I’ll get straight to the point. The longer politicians delay climate action, the worse climate disasters become. Can you join an action in your community on Wednesday June 29th to end dangerous climate delay and hold our politicians accountable for worsening climate disasters?

Don’t see an action near you? Host an action in your community. When you sign up, I will personally support you every step of the way with 1:1 support calls, organizing toolkits and more.

Paov, last summer we witnessed the deadliest event in Canadian history, the 2021 Heat Dome. And, scientists have warned that climate disasters like this will be mild compared to what we will experience in the future. This is a direct result of our government's failure to act at the scale that science and justice demand.

Despite the facts on the climate crisis being crystal clear, the Globe and Mail’s Editorial Board released an opinion piece this week calling Trudeau’s weak climate targets to reduce oil and gas emissions “too ambitious”, and suggested meeting them is “not prudent”, despite being in a climate emergency.1

I couldn’t believe what I was reading, Paov. We...

BC parks

PAOV — There is an ancient forest near Duncan Lake in the Kootenays that is home to trees over 1,000 years old, and at least one tree that is estimated to be over 2,000 years old. Logging and road building is planned nearby, putting the entire area and its resident wildlife at risk. The BC government is being urged to create a new provincial park at Duncan Lake to permanently protect the old-growth trees — if you agree, add your name.

Canadian companies polluting the ocean?

Email template | Change.orgr1

PAOV — Canadian deep sea mining companies are planning to extract polymetallic nodules from the ocean floor between Hawaii and Mexico. These nodules are essential for marine life in the area, helping to regulate the pH of the water and providing a habitat for coral. The mining will cause massive damage to the ocean’s ecosystems, while the mining vessels will release millions of cubic feet of sediment and pollution directly into the ocean. Petition starter Melanie is asking for an immediate moratorium on deep sea mining to protect the ocean. Show your support by signing the petition now.
