PAOV — Calf roping, or tie-down roping, is a popular rodeo event where panicked young calves are lassoed around the neck and tied up by cowboys. The impact of being slammed to the ground can cause serious injuries to the calves, like spinal cord damage, broken bones, and internal hemorrhaging. Petition starter Wendy is urging Rodeo Canada to end calf roping at their events. If you think that baby animals shouldn’t be tortured for entertainment, sign the petition now.

22,378 have signed Wendy Szakacs’s petition. Let’s get to 25,000!

From Dogwood's latest blog...
John Horgan certainly left his mark on the lands known as British Columbia.
The Site C dam, which is permanently erasing more than 10,000 years of human history and culture in the Peace River Valley, will be his most expensive monument.
But there’s also the Coastal GasLink pipeline, endless fracking pads and tailings ponds, giant clearcuts, and mine and highway expansions. Horgan’s legacy is visible from...

Yesterday was powerful

Paov,
Yesterday was powerful. Hundreds of people in communities across the country came together to remember the lives lost in the 2021 Heat Dome and show our politicians that we won’t stand by while they put even more lives at risk with their reckless climate delay.
From Moncton to Whitehorse to Victoria and over a dozen other places in between, people turned out to mark this tragic anniversary and demand the safe, liveable future we all deserve. It was incredibly moving to hear directly from people who had suffered and lost loved ones during the Heat Dome, and to see people of all ages and walks of life show up in solidarity. Together, we sent a clear message about the urgent need to stop fossil fuel expansion and pass a Just Transition Act that puts people first.
At yesterday’s action in Edmonton, a postal worker named Kathleen talked about how extreme weather has been making her daily...

CFSC on Project Save the World podcast
Our Communications Coordinator Matt Legge joined Metta Spencer's "Project Save The World" podcast together with guests Liz Carmichael (professor at Oxford University) and Rachel Small (World Beyond War's Coordinator in Canada).
It was a wide-ranging discussion beginning briefly on protests against Canada's largest weapons fair, followed by a longer disagreement about the Queen of England's Jubilee and the meaning of the monarchy today. Later in the show Matt discusses CFSC's book Are We Done Fighting? and talks about some examples of platforms that promote more positive conflicts amidst the hate and radicalization taking place on much of social media.
CFSC continues to facilitate the free workshops that Matt mentions. Find out more about building your peace skills and get on the wait list...

Rising food prices

PAOV — Is your grocery bill going up? Last week, Canada’s consumer price index data showed that inflation has reached the highest rate in nearly four decades. Grocery prices have increased 9.7% and the cost of fresh vegetables 10.2%. Food bank usage among single-parent families is rising. Despite rising costs of living and food insecurity, a crucial parcel of farmland in southern BC is set to be sold and developed into industrial parks. The 300-acre site produces 30-50 million servings of vegetables like potatoes, carrots, and cabbage every year. Petition starter Tristin says now is not the time to be selling off fertile farmland and is urging the federal government to lease the land to local farmers. If you think that BC farmland shouldn’t be paved over for industrial buildings, sign the petition.

Can you chip in $5 to investigate the draconian future of abortion bans?

The last time abortion was illegal in large swaths of America, there were no cellphones, no internet, and no at-home abortion pills.
Today, right-wing state governments won’t stop at closing down clinics within their borders. Any meaningful attempt to enforce an abortion ban will inevitably involve dystopian new surveillance schemes.
Already, the National Right to Life Committee has proposed model legislation that would criminalize “giving instructions over the telephone, the internet, or any other medium of communication regarding self-administered abortions.”
With laws banning abortion set to take effect in up to 22 states, Intercept reporters are investigating the draconian means by which they’ll be enforced.
This is exactly the kind of journalism The Intercept was founded to pursue, but it’s coming...

Two minute action to End Climate Delay

Paov,
Today communities across the country will remember the 619 lives lost in the 2021 Heat Dome in BC, and call out federal politicians for continuing to delay real climate action.
From Moncton to Salt Spring Island to Whitehorse, we’re gathering outside MP offices today to honour those we lost and demand our politicians deliver the bold Just Transition legislation we need to avoid a future of worsening climate disasters.
If you can’t make it to an End Climate Delay event in person, you can still show your solidarity and make a big impact today.
Since the Heat Dome tragedy, the federal government has approved a massive new offshore oil project, given the Trans Mountain pipeline a $10 billion loan guarantee, and failed to deliver the long-promised Just Transition Act. This reckless climate delay is putting us on a dangerous path of worsening climate disasters.
Paov, let’s make sure our MPs know we won’t stand for this any longer. Use our online tool to...
