End Climate Delay

Paov,
Last week, hundreds of people across the country joined us for a mass organizing call. People shared their stories about living through the deadly Heat Dome that claimed at least 619 lives last summer -- making it the single most deadly climate-fuelled event in Canadian history.1
People see right through the federal government’s climate delay tactics of approving fossil fuel expansion in the midst of a climate emergency and how it is putting our future at risk. That’s why on Wednesday June 29th, we’re holding a national Day of Action to End Climate Delay and mark the one year anniversary of the Heat Dome.
To make an impact, we need as many communities as possible to take part. Join us at an event near you.
Don’t see an action in your community yet? Host an event in your community now.
Scientists have warned that we’re in for extreme heat that will make last summer look mild. This is a direct result of our government's failure to act at the scale that science and justice demand. You can draw a straight line from Canada’s failing...

Vaquitas

A,
The tiny vaquita porpoise is the most threatened sea mammal in the world. Fewer than 10 are left – pushed to the edge of extinction by illegal fishing nets that ensnare and drown them within minutes.
But there's a flicker of hope.
Scientists have discovered astounding genetic health among the last surviving vaquitas – meaning these beautiful creatures could fully bounce back if dangerous fishing practices end now. And we can help make that happen!
San Felipe in Mexico is the centre of the local fishing industry. And three amazing groups there are working flat out to equip locals with sustainable fishing gear that’s completely safe for vaquitas.
Already fishers are switching over, but with so few vaquitas left we need to act quickly. They urgently need money to buy safe fishing gear, train people on how to use it and get it onto fishing boats as fast as possible.

We’re writing to you today because The Intercept is currently engaged in multiple legal fights to allow our journalists to uncover the truth, and our costs have piled up.
Billionaire Erik Prince sued The Intercept over an article we published — and that we stand by — about efforts to sell military services to a sanctioned Russian entity. Our legal defense in that case alone has cost $200,000.
Meanwhile, The Intercept’s investigation into the brutal crackdown on Dakota Access pipeline protestors led to us filing a lawsuit under state open records laws to gain access to thousands of pages of documents currently being kept from the public. That case has cost another $100,000 and counting.
Our reporters have never shied...

Your place for news and action
A majority of Canadians are worried about climate change. But more than half of people think the government is doing enough to solve the problem. In one poll, 71 per cent of respondents graded federal action as “good” or “acceptable.”
Maybe it’s because most people can’t or don’t follow climate policy very closely. Or because people don’t know about the sneaky marketing campaigns oil and gas companies spend billions of dollars on to suppress...

PAOV — “Four- and five-month-old baby calves are taken from their mothers so that cowboys can demonstrate their skills while spectators cheer.” Calf roping, or tie-down roping, is a rodeo event where a terrified young calf is lassoed around the neck by a cowboy and tied up. Lassoing and tying the calf up can cause serious injuries to the calf, like broken bones, spinal cord damage, and internal hemorrhaging. Petition starter Wendy is urging Rodeo Canada to end calf roping at their events. If you agree, sign the petition now.

PAOV — “It’s almost as if the government wants us to die because they see us as a waste of tax dollars.” People receiving disability support payments in Ontario have not seen their benefits increase in almost four years, and the last increase was less than 2%. Hundreds of thousands of people in the province are forced to live on less than $1,200 a month - a virtually impossible task in most of the province. Petition starter Serene is urging the provincial government to take immediate action to better support people who rely on Ontario’s disability support payments. If you agree with Serene and think the government must increase disability support payments, sign the petition now.

National Organizing Call TOMORROW

Paov,
The BC Coroners Service just released a new report on last June’s Heat Dome, confirming that it claimed at least 619 lives.1
It’s been nearly a year, but reading the report brought me right back to the brutal reality of being trapped in 40°C+ heat last summer. My family and I made it through, but so many of us didn’t. We owe it to them, and to ourselves, to make sure these deadly climate disasters don't become the new normal.
Tomorrow night we’re holding a national organizing call to share our plan to mark the one-year anniversary of the Heat Dome and hold our politicians accountable for delaying critical climate action.
Can you join the national organizing call? RSVP now to save your spot.
Date: Thursday, June 9
Time: 4pm PT / 5pm MT / 6pm CT / 7pm ET / 8pm AT / 8:30pm NT
I was on maternity leave when the Heat Dome hit, raising my then eight month old son and farming in the Okanagan. It felt unbearable at times. We had no choice but to work twelve-hour days in the blazing heat to save parched...

The Intercept is digging through a gold mine of hacked Russian government and corporate data, including from the country’s central bank, state-owned media, law firms, and the world’s largest pipeline company.
These leaks were obtained by hackers following the invasion of Ukraine and include more than 11 terabytes of data that could contain countless revelations on the inner workings of Vladimir Putin’s regime.
Our team has decades of collective experience handling large data sets like these. But this is a giant undertaking, requiring specialized technology and people to turn raw data into stories worthy of public interest, and it’s an expense we could never have planned for.
So today we’re turning to you, our readers, to help fund...
